I read Sandy Alderson’s 180
degrees out of logic regarding why Kirk
Nieuwenhuis
was called up instead of Matt
den Dekker…
something about Kirk being used to being on the bench and why fuck with nature
when September is just around the corner. September is just around the
corner??? IT’S AUGUST FUCKING SEVENTH.
Then, just to make sure I know what I’m talking about, I
go back and
check the PCL stats and, yep, there he is… Matt den Dekker leading the league in batting average.
check the PCL stats and, yep, there he is… Matt den Dekker leading the league in batting average.
So, this is the second guy (Wilmer Flores) we had that led the league in
at least one major category and never made it as a Mets starter, Who knows, by
the end of the month, we could have a third (Matt
Reynolds).
From
Paul West/TTF - This year’s Mets don’t seem like they’re going to fade down the
stretch, as they have in recent years. But they still have needs to address,
particularly their left field situation. Nobody has distinguished himself
enough to take firm hold of the position. Eric
Young is a middling
defender (albeit with exciting flashes) whose primary value lies in his
presence at leadoff — where Curtis
Granderson has
become a daily presence.
Kirk Nieuwenhuis is
a great outfielder, but his approach at the plate is still too flawed. Chris Young has been awful. But as with
Duda, the Mets’ left field solution might be in their own system in the person
of Matt den Dekker. In den Dekker, the Mets would
be adding another outstanding defender to a defense that’s helped their
pitching become a real strength. After struggling in his earlier visits to the
majors, den Dekker is now destroying the ball in the Pacific Coast League.
Granted, the PCL is a known hitter-friendly league, but den Dekker is one of
the best hitters in the entire PCL, and that’s got to count for something. Den
Dekker is fast, he’s got raw power and he’s an excellent defender. But if he
can hit well enough to drive in runs from the fifth, sixth or seventh spot, the
Mets might have their everyday left fielder. They also might continue to close
the space between themselves and the second wild-card spot. http://throughthefencebaseball.com/matt-den-dekker-could-be-left-field-solution-for-mets/43751#kO37MBGDdoAdR6Pj.99
Sandy… bubala… if we’re talking September already, would
it be asking too much to purge the lineup of one of the Youngs and call this
kid up? He’s turning like 50 and the least you could do is give him one more
shot. Yeah I know he’s another lefty. That’s fine… let him and Kirk platoon
with Soup in left. I really don’t care, right… remember it’s September…
Noah Syndergaard had another meh outing Thursday night... 5.0-IP, 102-pitches, four runs, four walks... as I mentioned below in the 'Minor Notes', scouts from both the Cubs and Rockies were on hand and Andy Martino speculated tonight that Colorado and the Mets could be working on a future deal for Thor in the off-season.
Ya know, all I want is the best five pitchers I can find for my rotation which usually means five guys that have already passed the test of time. Guys like, well, Jacob DeGrom and maybe not guys like Syndergaard who hasn't pitched one major league pitch yet.
The Mets need bats and every team wants the same guy... the one that threw 102 pitches in only five inning and gave up four runs and four walks. Maybe I could live with giving this kid up for a real shortstop who can hit
But, wait a minute. The Cubs had a scout at the game also. What he was scouting Syndergaard for a deal that could be made during this season.
Let's face it... Javier Baez isn't going anywhere as a middle infielder in Chicago.
Baea and Starlin Castro are also going no where during the season due to the fact that are both on the 40-man squad and would have to jump through hoops to get with Addison Russell for Noah Syn dergaard, We can get it done beforemthemrocketd go back and maybe we wind up finding zjacj for SAUL

David
Lennon of Newsday reported that it’s
only a matter of time before Sandy Alderson is
signed to an extension. Alderson also told Lennon that he has no plans on
leaving on his own and considers his job with the New York Mets incomplete (got
that in common).
Well, that’s
that.
I expected
as much. The Wilpons wouldn’t even know how to approach the process one must go
through to find a replacement, now that Bud Selig is gone. I agree with him
that the original painter should always be given the opportunity to finish the
canvas, but I just wish I enjoyed the process more and the results so far of
his actions.
I don’t
‘know’ Alderson, but I knew many people like him in the business world. I don’t
like his cuteness with the press and what seems sometimes like his downright
disrespect for the fan base. We talk all the time about what he has brought to
the table and how better the system is now that he’s here but do we really have
better players than Pedro Martinez, Carlos Beltran, and Jose Reyes
in the system?
I have real
mixed feelings here. I know that, if you replace the General Manager, everybody
else below him usually goes too and you have to start all over building the
organization. It took a good two years to get past the Minaya team that was in
place, including just about every scout the Mets employed back then.
I would feel
much more comfortable about this impending extension if I saw some inevitable
changes happen sooner than later. No one named Young is doing anything positive
for the current team or the future of it. There’s also no reason for Juan Centeno not to be backing up Travis d’Arnaud for the rest of the season. Get the
dead wood out of the clubhouse and replace it with some of the players that
Alderson supposedly feels haven’t been part of the completed plan.
You couldn’t
ask for a more perfect example of an incomplete team than yesterday’s game
against the Nationals. The Mets tied this game in the seventh and the relief
staff was splendid, but the bats simply could not produce another run through
the 13th inning. There never was a more important game in the season
to win, but, once again, the bats fell
silent (coupled with an amazingly stupid fielding play by CY that gave up a
critical run).
You need to
follow games like this with definitive personnel decisions to show everyone
around you that you will not tolerate a half-assed effort in the field during a
critical game that could have kept the Mets in a race for the pennant.
Will Sandy
do anything after this game? Did Sandy do anything after this game? You’re
going to read this a day after I wrote it so you tell me.
This is where Alderson fails me. We all know this
team doesn’t have all the pieces yet. We also know he has added some good
pieces as well. What he doesn’t seem capable of is making a decision that
2014’s goal should be finishing at a .500 percentage, using the players in the
future.

Add players
like Matt den Dekker, Juan
Centeno, Cesar Puello, Zack Thornton, and Chase

Let’s use
the rest of this year to see if we can find another Jacob
deGrom or Juan Lagares in the system.
Please chime
in.
Minor Notes –
The San Diego Padres announced the resignation of Vice President/Assistant
General Manager of player personnel Chad
MacDonald…
MacDonald was the person that talked Sandy
Alderson into
drafting Brandon
Nimmo, then quite them
Mets a couple of weeks later to take the San Diego job… Terry Collins said there has been no
discussion of sitting reliever Jeurys
Familia to
limit his innings… Reliever Daisuke Matsuzaka (elbow inflammation) is
throwing, including a flat-ground session Wednesday, and could be pitching in
rehab games next week… The GCL Mets closer, Alex
Pasha, recorded his 8th save Thursday, while lowering his
seasonal ERA to 0.93… Kingsport RF Wuilmer Becerra decided
to become a slugger on Thursday, hitting his 2nd and 3rd
home run of the season… SP Martires Arias’ Brooklyn
debut was quite impressive: 6.0-IP, 0-R, 6-K… Colorado had two top scouts at
the Las Vegas game on Thursday, tracking Noah
Syndergaard… Cubs scouts were also there…

I tortured myself by watching yesterday's game (first one I've seen in awhile)..........
Hey, Wilmer Flores had another hit, and oh yeah, the kid with 'absolutely no range' made a highlight reel play at short. .......oh well, guess its now time to spend another 3-4 days on the bench.
Mack-
Sandy's biggest enemy is his ego and arrogance-those are two things that could really hurt the Mets down the road if he remains in charge.
I agree with your DFAs and call-ups. After seeing Puello heat up some I started thinking it would be interesting to see what he could do the final month with the big club. IF they would actually start him a few games not bury him on the bench.
There's no reason for the Youngs, Dice K, Recker, Teagarden or Lannan to be on this team at this point.
If they don't go with the kids in Sept. it will be a wasted opportunity. I'd rather see them lose with youth than experience from here on out. I don't care if they don't even win 74 games again. It's time to see more than glimpses of the future now.
Yep, they should immediately call up Dekker (.405/.500/.670 in 45 games), Reynolds, and Centeno, and cut the two Youngs and .185 Recker. Play Dekker against all righties, play Reynolds and Flores at SS, sit Tejada 100% of the time, and play lefty Centeno (.290) against tough righties, so d'Arnaud can skip those. Does 2 things: adds desperately needed offense most likely, and we get to see what these guys have before off-season trades.
We can and should give up pitching for the likes of an Addison Russell. Plenty of pitching - turn some of it into future stud offensive players.
You're preaching to the choir (as will become evident later today when my next piece runs here). We have the potential to be in the cellar by the end of this weekend. If now is not the time to experiment with alternatives, when is?
As I look around MLB, I see Cuban and Japanese players helping their teams to varying degrees, some of them very significantly. But since Alderson took the reins, the Mets have not signed, or even pursued ONE of them. I don't count Dice-K, because he was already a past-his-peak veteran when he was signed. Even the Latino signings have yet to produce a close-to-MLB player. I see this as a major weakness of Alderson that hasn't been touched on. I wonder if he's at all interested in the 2 Cubans that have come on the market in the last few months. I doubt it.
BTW--It was EY, not CY, who made the fielding blunder that eventually cost us the game.
At this point, unless the scouts see something in MDD that they think will be exposed at the MLB level, you have to give him a shot. Adding another OF to the mix gives us options. It's also possible they're keeping him in AAA to not 'spoil' his trade value. Personally, given the way he has cut down on his K's, I think we could have a leadoff/#2 hitter in him.
Addison Russell is the guy I want from the Cubs and would trade pitching for him, just not Syndergaard. If we're going to move our biggest chip, it needs to be for an established MLB bat, preferably one that can hit in the middle of the order.
I don't think Reynolds is coming up in Sept, not on 40 man and they need the spots for protection and he is not eligible, so they may need to save the spot. also, let him continue to succeed where he is and go into next year with a ton of confidence. let Wilmer try SS for a longer period. agreed on MDD, even though it is PCL, he is leading the league in hitting, so not sure what more he can do. Puello was 2-3 last night with yet another walk, bringing that number up to nearly 10% and reduced his K rate below 20%. that is significant improvement on exactly the area they were looking for and is starting to hit (when he plays). he did have an error last night that led to an unearned run, but he also threw out 2 runners at the plate. I would love to see what a Puello/MMD platoon would do in RF for Sept and move Grandy to LF, in addition to Kirk as extra OF. Puello, MDD, and Kirk can play excellent defense, play CF, hit for power in spots and steal some bags. regardless of who is starting, any one of those three could be a nice piece of the bench if they don't start on a given day. run the kids out and see if we get lucky by solving the OF position in the short term before Comforto/Nimmo are ready. on one final note, if they are willing to settle for Tejada offense (ewww) I would rather see Tovar their for defense and may even produce more than Tejada offensively.
D-Whit -
There just isn't any reason for ANYONE who has no 2015 future with this team to still be on the roster.
Thomas -
If the Cubs were trying to do a deal NOW (due to 40-ran roster reasons) Russell would be the guy they would be offering.
Mack -
EY... CY... same same...
on Cubans, I've been told that the 'good ones' over there have already come stateside
I see no reason to DFA Torres unless you think the insane workload earlier this year has done long-term damage
Mack,
I'm starting to come to the conclusion that SA has quit and is trying for another top-10 draft pick.
S.F.N. -
Well, if you are correct, you are never going to hear him say that to anyone and his strategy might be to just finish the season with CY/CJY on the team and concentrate on the minors and the phones.
Steve
maybe what you say is true. Maybe Alderson has given up on this year and is trying to position for a better draft pick.
what does this say about Alderson though?
If he has given up then why:
Allow Collins to over-use Familia & Mejia (Mejia has been hurting recently) and Torres
Continue sitting Flores
Continue to play either of the Youngs
And
if he might be giving up at this point this year.....then wouldn't it be safe to believe he would have given up about the same time last year?
If so......then why didn't he rest more players toward the end of the year to make sure the Mets didn't get a higher draft pick? Wasn't there only one or two or three games difference between the 10th and 7th picks?
I am not saying he should give up or not.
Just pointing out that some of th things Alderson does that we try to rationalize doesn't seem to match up with other actions he takes.
I thought I'd look at how the Young-uns are doing statistically. Chris Young on pace in last 10 games, 6 for 31, expected, but 1 RBI. Horribly unacceptable.
EY JR is 7 for his last 42 with 2 RBIs.
Please release them both.
Bring up Dekker, and if you don't want to mess with kids like Reynolds, bring up Seratelli as a reward. he'd give you more than either Young currently is (not hard to do better than absolutely nothing)
Rather see Muno as he is likely to be protected anyway, while Serratelli will not and has no future with this team. If the Mets are to run players out there to see who might contribute next year, I don't want to waste even one AB for a player who has never and may never play a ML game
