Mets Minor League Report: August 6, 2014
MMLR Player of the Day: Brooklyn RHSP Scarlyn Reyes.
Las Vegas (66- 53) not scheduled tonight.
Binghamton (69-47) bests Richmond (66-51) 5-1.
Greg Peavey (W, 9-2) had a fine outing: 6.2 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 3 BB, 4 K.
Chase Hutchingson finished the 7th inning with a strikeout: 0.1 IP, K.
Jon Velasquez: 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB. (Otherwise known as a perfect inning.)
Cody Satterwhite: 1.0 IP, R, H, BB, 2 K.
Brian Burgamy: 1-3, HR, 2 BB, RBI, 2 R.
Dustin Lawley: 1-4, HR, BB, 2 RBI, 2 R.
PH Tyler Pill: 1-1, 2B. (With Brandon Nimmo and Kyle Johnson on the bench, Mgr. Wally Backman sent pitcher Pill up to pinch hit. Pill, a switch hitter, is batting .471 on the season. And, of course, Pill came through.
St. Lucie (63-48) nips Fort Myers (66-47) 6-5.
Jeremy Hefner had a setback in his rehab program: 1.0 IP, 3 R, 3 H,2 BB.
Seth Lugo: (W, 6-1) 5.0 IP, 2 R, 2 H, (HR) 4 BB, 5 K.

L.J. Mazzilli: 2-5, RBI.
Gilbert Gomez: 2-4, 2B, 3 RBI, R.
Gavin Cecchini: 3-3, BB, R. (Cecchini’s .221 avg. since his promotion to St. Lucie may not be too impressive, but there are signs he has finally acclimated himself to High A pitching. In his last 8 games, Gavin is hitting .393, with an OBP over .500.)
Game 1: Savannah (72-39) stifles Charleston (56-59) 2-0.
A strong performance by Robert Whalen (W, 7-0) with 5.1 shutout innings: 0 R, 4 H, 3 BB, 3 K.
Another dominant relief outing for Akeel Moris: (S, 13) 1.2 IP, 0 R, 0H, 0 BB, 4 K.
Yeixon Ruiz: 1-3, 2B, R.
Dominic Smith: 1-2, 2B, BB, RBI, R.
That’s about all the offense Savannah could generate. They had only 2 hits on the day. Thank heaven Whalen and Morris were able to make it stand up.
Game 2: Savannah (73-39) slaps Charleston (56-60) 5-3 for the sweep.
Octavio Acosta looked strong in his first start since his promotion to Savannah: 5.0 IP, 2 R, 1 ER, 5 H, 3 BB, 7 K.
Darwin Frias gave up a run, allowing the RiverDogs to tie, but hung in there to benefit from the Sand Gnats‘ 2 run outburst in their final at bat: (BS, 1) (W, 5-1) 2.0 IP, R, 2 H, 0 BB, 4 K.
Nelfi Zapata: 2-3, 2B, RBI.
Stefan Sabol: 2-2, 2 HR, BB, 4 RBI, 2 R. (Sabol, who has had a disappointing season in his second year in Savannah, hitting .195, shows a flash of promise. In his last 9 games he is batting .381 with a SLG of .762. Nine games is a tiny sample, probably indicative of nothing, but hopefully it builds Sabol‘s confidence and provides a springboard for the balance of this season.)
Mahoning Valley (23-29) nips Brooklyn (27-25) 2-1 with a run in the 12th inning.
Scarlyn Reyes pitched an absolute gem, to no avail: 6.0 IP, 0 R, 2 H, BB, 4 K.
Gaither Bumgardner’s 2 BB’s led to a run: 0.2 IP, R, 0 H, 2 BB,
Kelly Secrest: 2.1 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 2 BB, 2 K.
Paul Paez: 1.0 IP, 0 R, H, BB, K.
Luis Rengel: (L, 0-1) 1.1 IP, R, 2 H, BB, K.
All 5 Cyclones pitchers used today are carrying ERA’s lower than 3.00.

Tyler Moore: 3-4, 2 2B,.

Scarlin is hoping to bring Reyes Love back to Queens someday. Whelan has been remarkable in his career so far. So many Zeroes, so little time. Peavey has had a Jekyll and Hyde season...dominating AA after a brutal stint in AAA. We hope the Jekyll part continues.
Maybe we can fool another GM into thinking Peavey is a stud if we leave him at AA. Omar, are you out there?
