Starters Kevin Canelon and Nestor Cortes went toe-to-toe on the hill on Thursday night in Charleston, but it was the RiverDogs starter who won the tight battle. Columbia lost 1-0 at Joseph P. Riley Jr. Park.
The two hurlers combined for 18 strikeouts – 12 for Cortes (W, 2-0) and six for Canelon (L, 2-3). The Fireflies lefty scattered just four hits in arguably his most effective start of the season, but surrendered the lone run of the game in the fifth frame.
Kyle Holder doubled to start that inning and three batters later, Leonardo Molina singled him home. Canelon has been superb lately, posting a 2.25 ERA over his last four starts.
Jose Garcia had a nice night at the plate for Columbia (20-20), going 2-for-3 with a pair of singles.
