The Fort Myers Miracle hit three home runs and beat the St. Lucie Mets 7-1 on Sunday at Tradition Field to avoid a three-game sweep.
Lefty Stephen Gonsalves held the Mets to four hits and one run over 5.1 innings to improve to 5-1. Brian Gilbert and Todd Van Steensel closed out the game without allowing any runs.
Austin Diemer put the Miracle on the board in the third with a one out solo home run off of Josh Prevost. Later in the inning Kevin Taylor dropped a fly ball in left that would have ended the inning. Instead play continued and Trey Vavra hit a three-run shot to put Fort Myers up 4-0. The Mets unsuccessfully argued that the ball was foul and did not clear the fence.
The Mets scored their only run in the bottom of the third when John Mora doubled and later scored on a sac fly from Jonathan Johnson.
The Miracle added two runs in the fourth. Max Murphy capped off the scoring with a solo home run in the eighth for the final margin of 7-1.
Paul Paez pitched three scoreless innings of relief. Prevost allowed six runs, three earned, in four innings.
Tomas Nido went 2 for 4 with a double.
The Miracle reclaimed first place by half a game over the Mets. The Mets lead the season series 4-2.
