OPEN THREAD - J.D. Davis

So, the Mets have this guy that is 26/yrs.old, plays third base, both corner outfield positions, does little wrong and hits around .300 from both lefties and righties.

So...

Here's the question...

Where would J.D. Davis best fit as an every day player?

Unlike the mistake of not embracing what was had with Wilmer Flores, let's see if J.D. Davis can become a full time third baseman. If and when Jed Lowrie returns in 2020, let HIM be the supersub. He hasn't earned his bloated paycheck. Davis has more than earned his paltry one. I'm expecting an outfield of McNeil, Nimmo and Cespedes and Conforto in some configuration next year unless they can legally opt out of paying the car collector.

Look forward to the DH.
NEVER thought I'd ever say that.

Stranger things have happened than Yo coming back.

I love JD.

Love the trade that got him here, giving up overvalued mid-level prospects for Major League talent.

That said: I don't think he can field.

Maybe on a different team, you hope he slowly figures it out at 3B, which would be awesome. But on a team configured like the Mets, with inferior defense at 1B, 2B, SS, C (Ramos), and CF, can they really afford to clank there, too?

I'd repeat his role in 2020, see how the glove develops. The foot speed doesn't work defensively in the outfield, IMO.

Ultimately, there's no rush to final judgment. I think the play is to wait and see.

J.D doesn't look too good at 3B. I would probably play him in LF and play McNeil at 3B once Frazier is gone.

Reese, who is Jeff Lowrie? lol.

Whatever his mysterious injury is, I can't imagine it taking more than a full year to fully heal, so he should be back. Then the question is the OF alignment.

Do we juggle Forto, Nimmo and Squirrel somehow, or include one of the 1st two on a deal for a true CFer (Marte?), which still leaves a crowd.

If JDD becomes a full time 3Bman, then Squirrel keeps flying in the OF. And there seems to be no spot for Lowrie.

A lot of decisions await Brodie. The improvement in Amed's D makes it more likely that he stays at SS. And Cano is going nowhere unless he is bought out (very unlikely). And what (and where) is Smith's future? Trade bait?

I see an interesting Winter ahead.

He should play in LF

MLB.com had a great article on JD Davis yesterday about how he has one of the highest OPS for a right hand hitter in the history of Citi Field. Given how hitters have struggled in that park, JD needs to stay on the field.

Also, SNY had a great interview with JD yesterday. JD talked about getting the opportunity with the Mets this year to play even when he struggled and how young players need that. Thanks Mickey and Brodie. We get on you all the time but you did good with JD.
