12-16-22 - 2022 Fall Report: Arizona State

Transfer Ross Dunn (Florida State) was one of ASU’s headlining portal acquisitions. The 6-foot-3, 225-pound lefthander made 11 starts in his sophomore season, and while the overall results were uneven (2-4, 4.88 ERA), his 14.4 K/9 over 48 innings speaks to an electric arsenal. On the right day, the athletic Dunn will work his fastball into the mid-90s.

Pitchability must improve, and his secondary pitches need refinement, but the raw materials are next level. Dunn missed the bulk of the fall with a non-arm injury, but there is hope that he will be ready for opening day.

25. San Diego Padres: Ross Dunn, LHP, Arizona State

I was surprised to see him transfer from Florida State to Arizona State, but it’s a good career move for him. ASU will get more eyes on his games, plus, it will let him stand out in a staff he could be the ace of. He’s got a four-pitch mix, all with life and deception.

23. Cleveland Guardians

Ross Dunn, LHP, Arizona State

Dunn was heralded as having the best stuff on a Florida State staff in 2022 that shut down it’s opponents on the regular. Now a Sun Devil, he’ll take his four-pitch mix and impressive pitch metrics to Tempe where he hopes to establish himself as the nation’s premier southpaw. Dunn has an explosive arsenal with a fastball up to 96 and a ton of deception.

24. Ross Dunn, LHP, Arizona State – Arizona State had a quality transfer portal this past season, and no one is expected to make a bigger impact than Dunn. He has a very well balanced and controlled delivery that does create some cross-body action despite a pretty traditional 3/4 arm slot.

His fastball sits in the low 90s and has a solid slider and a change that has some fade to it. One issue is the arm speed does slow some on the change, so that needs to be corrected if he is going to be successful at the next level.

Ross Dunn

Arizona State

A Florida State transfer, Dunn features a low-to-mid 90s fastball, up to 96 with a low-80s slider and a mid-80s changeup. It's a super-projectable lefty with a big, strong body and a loose arm action and operation on that mound that certainly points to a future starter at the next level.

Dunn does a great job utilizing his lower half, sinking into his glutes and exploding to the plate. There's some deception is his delivery that really allows the slider to play up too. It's the sort of mechanism that should lend well toward performing at the next level.

21. Toronto Blue Jays

Ross Dunn, LHP, Arizona State

The Blue Jays have been all over the map in recent drafts. 2022 was a prep-heavy experience so maybe they go back to the college well in 2023. Dunn figures to headline the Sun Devils weekend rotation in 2023 following his transfer out of Florida State. He’s been up to 96 with a deceptive fastball and a gnarly slider that tunnels his heat very well. This is where a run on college arms could really begin.

Dunn being lefty, that alone makes him attractive.
