 Thomas White

LHP          Phillips Academy

1-1-23 - Perfect Game California @California_PG

#6 in the country, and the top pitcher, Thomas White, lefty out of Phillips Academy (MA). Long, loose, 6'5" frame generates easy velo to mid 90's w high spin CB and SL (to 2700's) w/ CH at 86.  Vandy Boys commit.

5. Thomas White, LHP, Phillips Academy (MA) – At 6’5” and 210 lbs., White has plenty of projection in the body but already runs his fastball up to 96 while sitting 94-95. He also has an incredibly smooth delivery with the velo coming easy and very low effort, meaning there is no question his future is as a rotation arm. He has shown the makings of a change, but it is incredibly raw, and has a curve and slider.

The curve is a sweeping 2-plane breaker while the slider has more sharp cutting actions. His command really drifts when in the stretch, but the stuff doesn’t tick down too much. It would not at all be a shock if White finds a way to get into the conversation to go 1-1 in July.

15. Chicago White Sox: Thomas White, LHP, Phillips Academy (MA)

The White Sox have taken prep pitching in the last four drafts and lefties in two of the last three. White is a 6-foot-5-inch, 210-pound southpaw who is committed to Vanderbilt. He’s a potential top-of-the-rotation starter with a fastball that touches 96 mph with high-spin breaking stuff.

12. Arizona Diamondbacks: Thomas White, LHP, Phillips Academy (MA)

White has been known for sometime in the class. He’s got a premium body that’s developed nicely for a future big leaguer. There’s a ton of deception with his short-arm three-quarters delivery that frustrates hitters when trying to pick up his stuff. He’s also got large hands, which for a southpaw, is nice to see. He projects as a future starter.

Which top arm would you take?

Thomas White (L) - 93-96 from LS w huge carry & plus arm speed, good breaker, big traits, #1 LHP in ‘23.

Noble Meyer (R) - 95-98 w good life, s&m hard sweeping slider in mid-80s w 3000+ RPMs, #1 RHP in ‘23

Cardinals

Thomas White

LHP

Phillips Andover HS (MA)

White has the highest ceiling in the class and as a result should command significant money. The Cardinals have developed all sorts of arms, and getting a potential 1:1 pick here is alluring.

15. Chicago White Sox

Thomas White, LHP, Phillips Academy

White has been reasonably famous in this class for quite some time. It’s an ultra-premium body with mid-90s velocity coming from the left side. White has a ton of deceptive qualities in his delivery, and a short-arm mid three-quarters delivery that makes it incredibly tough for hitters to pick up his stuff. It’s not all too dissimilar to Noah Schultz, the White Sox 2021 first round pick. This would be quite the two-headed monster in a future Chicago rotation.

29. Philadelphia Phillies | Thomas White, LHP, Phillips Academy (Mass.)

The fall of White finally ends near the end of the first round, as the upside and future projection ranks him amongst the top arms in the entire class. White is a well-known name with what he brings. It’s plus arm speed with angle on a mid-90s fastball that shoots out of the hand.

The breaker and changeup need more consistency in shape and refinement, but the upside is well above this spot if everything comes together. White would also be a good fit in Philadelphia for an organization unafraid to take prep arms in the first round the past few years in Mick Abel and Andrew Painter. -IB

22. Thomas White

Left-Handed Pitcher, Phillips Academy

There are those that believe White is the best prep southpaw prospect available in any draft since Steve Avery was selected no. 3 overall in 1988. Better than Brien Taylor. Better than McKenzie Gore. Better than the whole lot of them. White has been a totem on the prep scouting scene since he was 13 years old. It's a whippy arm with huge projection, but already shoving gas.

White has been up to 96 and many believe he'll approach triple digits when it's all said and done. He's shown feel for spinning the baseball, primarily a low-to-mid 70s curveball with tight tilt that projects. White can also pronate and turn over a changeup. At this stage, both of his secondaries are a work-in-progress, but show big promise.

Given his size, his move down the mound and subsequent extension, the baseball explodes on hitters with life at the top of the zone. Skeptics do question the fastball command, however. That’ll be a big part of his development.

White hadn’t pitched much in showcases, only giving small glimpses of his stuff before heading to the PDP League, where he promptly struck out seven in his three-inning start. The command wavered a bit, but the stuff was legit: a fastball up to 96 with good carry, an upper-70s slider with good spin rates and an effective changeup.
