Jacob Wilson

12-26-22 - Joe Doyle @JoeDoyleMiLB

Son of slick-fielding vet Jack Wilson, Grand Canyon SS Jacob Wilson is just as promising a pro as his father was. Elite bat-to-ball skills, sublime instincts and twitchiness on the diamond, Jacob is as polished a player as you'll find in the 2023 draft.    https://t.co/sw5uBQMEij

7. Jacob Wilson, SS, Grand Canyon

Wilson only struck out seven times in 2022. He doesn't have an insane amount of power but will be an outstanding fielder with at least enough pop to turn some heads.

6. Oakland Athletics: Jacob Wilson, SS, Grand Canyon

Wilson moved to shortstop last season and was superb for Team USA this summer. He walks a ton and doesn’t strike out very often. Wilson is likely to stay on the infield dirt and should be a top ten pick.

9. Colorado Rockies: Jacob Wilson, shortstop, Grand Canyon

Jack Wilson, the son of the former All-Star infielder, could be even better than his father. One of the biggest reasons for that belief is his plate discipline, as Jacob struck out in only 2.5% of his plate appearances this past season. While he’ll never be a star, Wilson’s high floor as an above-average regular is even more suited for Coors Field and the Colorado Rockies.

10. Miami Marlins: Jacob Wilson, IF, Grand Canyon University

Established bat-to-ball skills, Wilson is about has productive as they come. His mature approach at the plate you just don’t see from small school guys. I want to see what he does against better arms. That will be the true test for the California native.

2. SS Jacob Wilson

Jacob Wilson is a collegiate prospect with arguably the most advanced plate discipline and approach in this draft class. He finished last season with the lowest strikeout rate in the country (min. 200 at-bats).

Jacob Wilson is a 6’3”, 190-pound shortstop for the Grand Canyon University Lopes. The California native has been a starting infielder for the Lopes since he arrived on campus in the fall of 2020. In 246 at-bats last season, Wilson only struck out seven times (2.5 K%). He also slashed .358/.418/.585 with 88 hits, eighteen doubles, twelve home runs, 65 RBIs, and a 1.004 OPS.

The Marlins are reportedly focused on acquiring more contact-oriented hitters in the future. Wilson matches that description perfectly.

Jacob Wilson

Grand Canyon; Thousand Oaks HS (CA)

Not a local kid, but still a California native, Wilson's big spring and summer with USA Collegiate National Team cements his status as an elite prospect in the class.

7. Cincinnati Reds

Jacob Wilson, Infield, Grand Canyon

The Reds fell a bit further than they’d like in the lottery, but this is a deep, deep draft and Wilson has the look of a guy that could play 15 years in pro ball and hit .300 every single year. We’re talking about a guy who struck out just seven times TOTAL in 2022. Truly elite bat-to-ball skills.

10. Miami Marlins | Jacob Wilson, SS, Grand Canyon

Wilson would give the Marlins back-to-back collegiate bats in the first round. While Wilson does not have as much power as last year’s first round pick Jacob Berry, the GCU shortstop possesses top-of-the-line bat-to-ball skills that makes him nearly impossible to strikeout. The power continues to develop, as do the defensive actions, with both likely being at least 50-grade tools down the line. -TH

4. Jacob Wilson, SS, Grand Canyon – The son of former MLB All-Star infielder Jack Wilson, Jacob is a chip off the old block. He has a quick bat with a good line drive swing that sees him shift his weight quite a bit but controlled and with balance. In 2022, Wilson struck out in just 3% of his trips to the plate and followed the season with an excellent showing for the U.S. collegiate national team. Power is well below average currently, but his body has some projectability left in it so that could get closer to average in time while he is also probably an average defender at short, his instincts just might be able to keep him there, while a move to second or third would be a good fit too. Wilson has a very limited ceiling, so it is easy to sleep on him, but the floor is extremely high and he could be one of the quickest moving position players once he signs a pro contract.

7. Jacob Wilson

Shortstop, Grand Canyon

Jacob Wilson has been one of the most accomplished, mature hitters in the country during his stay at GCU. He's got a prolific eye at the plate with an extremely advanced approach and a grand willingness to use the whole field. Wilson never strikes out. Like, ever. In 2022, he took 25 free passes, punching out just seven times. Wilson showcases 40-grade power but many believe he'll grow into fringe-average pop in the pros. He's an average defender at shortstop and could comfortably move to third base or second base. Elite instincts on the field and makeup off the field, Wilson checks a ton of boxes and is a very popular figure among his peers and evaluators.

5. Jacob Wilson, SS, Grand Canyon

The son of former big leaguer Jack Wilson, Jacob led NCAA Division I in strikeout rate (3 percent) while batting .358/.418/.585 last spring, then was the best hitter on the U.S. collegiate national team. He's a fundamentally sound hitter and defender with average speed and solid strength. He offers a higher floor but less ceiling than Gonzalez.

7. Washington Nationals

Jacob Wilson, Infield, Grand Canyon

If the Athletics are disappointed with the No. 6 overall pick, the Nationals would be downright upset over this outcome. The three-worst teams each have an 81 percent chance of landing a pick in the top six. Getting the seventh pick would sting. Still, a lot of good players in this class and Wilson is one of them. The Nationals are absolutely loaded and Wilson would be the cherry on top. This is probably the best hit tool in the class with absurd contact rates and fringy power that he gets to with an efficient swing plane. Wilson has a shot to play shortstop, but could shift to left field or second base as a pro. An infield featuring Wilson, Brady House and CJ Abrams would be awfully fun.

18. Twins: Jacob Wilson, SS, Grand Canyon

Wilson’s father, Jack, played 12 years in the big leagues and will now be an assistant coach at Grand Canyon. Not that the younger Wilson needs help after hitting .358/.418/.585 as a sophomore, then performing on the Cape and going 4-for-11 with USA Baseball.
