Field: 50 | Overall: 50
Caraway was a Top 100 prospect out of JSerra Catholic High
School, but went undrafted in 2023 because of his strong commitment to Oregon
State. He was off to a solid start during his freshman year, but played in just
18 games because of a broken finger from a bunt attempt. He came back to turn
in an All-Star performance in the Cape Cod League over the summer, setting the
stage for a Draft-eligible sophomore season with the Beavers.
A right-handed hitter with a ton of bat speed and strength,
Caraway has long shown a propensity for hard contact. He was one of the better
pure hitters among prep bats in 2023 and that carried over to Oregon State and
the Cape. He’s aggressive at the plate and there has been some swing-and-miss
in his game, though he’s also shown a willingness to work counts. He has plenty
of raw power, especially to his pull side, and this fall he appeared even more
physical with consistently professional at-bats.
While he’s not a runner, Caraway has the chance to stick at
third base with above-average hands and an easily plus arm across the diamond.
He might be able to handle a corner outfield spot if the hot corner doesn’t
work out, but it’s his bat and run-producing potential that could have him
taken in the first round.

25. San Diego Padres: Trent Caraway, 3B, Oregon State
Trent Caraway only played in 18 games his freshman season
with Oregon State due to a broken finger. However, during his limited time, he
posted a .947 OPS across 72 plate appearances. He also played well in the Cape
Cod League last year, hitting four home runs, with 21 RBI and an .811 OPS in 28
games. He has really good bat speed and raw power and is a hitter that could
turn heads for the San Diego Padres.

No. 24 Detroit Tigers: Trent Caraway, 3B, OSU
When he played for Oregon State in 2024, he crushed the ball
to tune of .339/.431/.516, but he played just 18 games due to injury.
The 6-foot-2, 205-pound third baseman could be the steal of
the first round at No. 23.

MLB 2025 Mock Draft 2.0: Predictions for Every 1st-Round Pick
24. Detroit Tigers: 3B Trent Caraway, Oregon State
A top draft prospect out of California prep powerhouse JSerra
Catholic in 2023, Caraway ended up going undrafted because of his strong
commitment to Oregon State. A broken finger limited him to 18 games as a
freshman in 2024, but he made up for lost time with an All-Star turn in the
Cape Cod League. He has the offensive tools to be one of the breakout hitters
of the college season with good health, and he could play his way much higher
up the draft board.

22. Trent Caraway – 3B
HT/WT: 6’2/203 | Bat/Throw: R/R | School: Oregon State | Age:
21.3
One of the most prized prospects to make it to campus after
the 2023 draft, Caraway would’ve been in contention for being the best freshman
in the country had a broken finger not sidelined him for two months.
He’s a masher in every sense of the word. Uber-physical, loud
bat speed, and robust power to all fields. He’s already cleared the 110 MPH
exit velocity threshold on numerous occasions and his barrel feel should
continue to improve as he gets more at-bats under his belt.
In his small sample during the spring, there were
swing-and-miss concerns, but Caraway mitigated some of those concerns on the
Cape, especially against fastballs.
His approach looked much better and he cut down on his
chases, though he does struggle with spin and hits the ball on the ground more
often than not.
Caraway has the skills and arm strength to handle the hot
corner as a professional, though his size may force him to move into a corner
outfield position as he physically matures.

32. Trent Caraway, SS/3B, JSerra HS (CA) – Currently listed
as a shortstop, the actions are stiff and just not fluid enough there and an
early move to third is likely in his future, but he has plenty of arm for
third. He is a better than average runner who shows solid bat control that
stays in the zone a long time and has real bat speed. There is some loop in the
swing and the actions so it is absolutely a power over hit approach but he has
been a producer on the showcase circuit so there is little doubt he can handle
top tier arms.

Draft: Gut Feel Guys

Trent Caraway, 3B/OF, JSerra Catholic (Calif.)
Current Draft Board Rank: 92
The offensive ability of Caraway cannot be denied. The Oregon
State commit produces hard hit contact regularly and has shown a consistent hit
tool throughout this prep career. There is plenty of strength present that
should start turning into more in-game power regularly. The arm plays at third
base and Caraway should have the athleticism to handle himself there. It would
not be a surprise if a team jumps on Caraway earlier.
