The Herd:
Scott Sizemore’s walk-off home run gave the Toledo Mud Hens a wild, 11-10, win over the Buffalo Bisons as 10,700 looked on at Fifth Third Field. Sizemore’s solo shot easily cleared the 365 sign in left. It was his second home run of the night as Toledo pounded out 17 hits against four Bisons pitchers.
Sizemore’s game-winner came off lefthander Jon Switzer (0-3). The Bisons pitching staff had allowed just 18 earned runs in its last 10 games before allowing 11 earned on Saturday.
The game, which took 3 hours and 38 minutes, saw the Mud Hens put together a pair of five-run innings to record their 16th come-from-behind victory. The game was the opener of a four-game series.
Toledo appeared as though it wouldn’t need to play the home half of the ninth. A bases-clearing triple by Brent Dlugach plated three runs giving Toledo a 10-8 lead after eight.
But the Bisons, who were down to their final strike in the ninth, rallied to tie it, 10-10, thanks to a two-run triple by Argenis Reyes.
The Herd finished with 15 hits, including three each by Mike Lamb, Jesus Feliciano and Reyes.
B-Mets:
Some quick hits from Saturday night's 8-4 victory by the Akron Aeros:- The B-Mets have lost six of eight and been outscored, 24-7, over the first two games of the series.- Ike Davis extended his hitting streak to 16 games with a 2-for-4 night.- The B-Mets fell behind, 8-0, after six innings before scoring four times in the ninth.- Dylan Owen got knocked around, giving up six runs on six hits and four walks in three innings. He gave up a grand slam to Carlos Rivero (off the hyphen on the Press & Sun-Bulletin sign on the left-field scoreboard). - An observation - Akron is the most complete team I've seen in a long time. They do EVERYTHING well ... they obviously hit and pitch well, but their defense is solid, they are fantastic on the basepaths (they always seem to take, and get the extra base). It's no wonder they're on top of the league.
The Sand Gnats ninth-inning rally fell one hit shy as Josh Satin grounded out to third with the bases loaded to give the Bowling Green Hot Rods a, 3-2, win over the Gnats in front of 2,664 at Grayson Stadium. Sand Gnats starter Chris Schwinden, who took a no decision, carried a no-hit bid before Mike Sheridan broke it up with two outs in the seventh inning.
Down by one entering the ninth, Jordan Abruzzo led off the inning with a double that shot into center field. After Imbewer Alvarez was inserted as a pinch runner, Jean Luc Blaquiere drew a walk from closer Josh Satow to put the go-ahead run on at first. Joey August laid down a textbook bunt to move the runners to second and third to bring up Raul Reyes.
Reyes drew an intentional walk to load the bases for 18-year-old Jefry Marte, who fouled out on a 1-0 pitch to the first baseman Sheridan. Satin worked a two-two count before hitting the hard-hit ball that Isaias Velasquez snared at third for the final out.
Schwinden retired 16 in a row after allowing a one-out walk to Velasquez in the second. Sheridan’s single broke up the no-no and he would also score the Hot Rods’ first run when he came around to score on a two-out single by Kyeong Kang.
The Visalia, Calif. native left with a, 2-1, lead and Jason Tweedy on a first in the eighth, working seven innings and allowing two runs on three hits with four strikeouts. Jake Goldberg (0-1) came in to relieve Schwinden in the eighth and proceeded to retire the first two men he faced. With two away, Tim Beckham delivered a double that scored Tweedy from first to tie it. Jake Jefferies singled behind Beckham to drive last year’s first overall pick for the go-ahead run.
Sean Ratliff helped the Gnats offense with his solo home run in the fourth that made it 2-0 at the time. He finished 2-for-3 and has now hit safely in 17 straight games, which is the longest streak since Edgardo Baez hit in 17 straight during the Gnats 2006 campaign.
