From Press Release:
The Augusta GreenJackets (25-15) finished a four-game sweep of the Savannah Sand Gnats with a 3-1 win Wednesday night at Lake Olmstead Stadium in Augusta, GA. The Gnats (24-16) scored their first and only run of the series in the top of the second inning, which snapped the Gnats’ scoreless innings streak in the series at 37 and overall at 40.
Wednesday’s loss drops Savannah one game behind Augusta for first place in the SAL Southern Division. The Gnats had held at least a share of first every day since April 21.
The Gnats took their only lead of the series with a run in the top of the second. With one out, LF Rafael Fernandez singled into center field. Fernandez advanced to second on a DH Nick Santomauro walk, and scored on 1B Alex Gregory’s RBI single into right field to give Savannah a 1-0 lead. Fernandez who was 2-4, was one of the two Gnats with two hits. Savannah CF Juan Lagares, who had an eight-game hitting streak snapped Tuesday, was 2-3 with a walk on Wednesday.
The Savannah lead held up until the fourth inning, when the GreenJackets struck for two runs against Gnats starter Jimmy Fuller. With one out, 3B Chris Dominguez walked and 1B Luke Anders singled to put runners at first and second. Fuller then struck out DH Tommy Joseph, but with two outs, catcher Hector Sanchez doubled to center field to bring home both runners and give the GreenJackets a 2-1 lead. Fuller finished six innings in which he allowed two runs on four hits and three walks while striking out eight. He took the loss to fall to 5-2.
Augusta added an insurance run in the seventh inning against reliever John Church, who was working in his second-straight game. With two outs and the bases empty, CF Even Crawford tripled into center field and scored on a single up the middle by SS Sharlon Schoop.
