5/13/10

Portland 2, Binghamton 1

From Press Release:

Brahiam Maldonado, fresh up from a stint with St. Lucie, roped three hits to pace the offense, but it was not enough as Binghamton dropped the game 7-2 and the series 2-1 at Hadlock Field Wednesday night. It is just the second series that the B-Mets have lost in 2010 and first since their season-opening, four-game set with Akron. Mike Antonini gave up a season-high five runs in 5.2 innings to take his third loss.

Binghamton (19-14) struck first against starter Felix Doubront in the third inning. Luis Hernandez singled to open the inning and was joined on base by Nick Evans, who walked. The inning appeared over after Zach Lutz grounded into a double play to third, which forced the lead runner and Lutz, leaving just Evans at second. However, Marshall Hubbard lined a single into right, plating Evans, to give the B-Mets an early 1-0 advantage.

The lead was short-lived as Portland (19-12) rallied to tie in the third. Antonini, who was crusing having retired the first seven to face him, left a fastball up to Juan Apodaca, which the catcher crushed over the centerfield wall.

The Sea Dogs took the lead for good in the fourth courtesy of a pair of doubles. Ryan Kalish singled and stole second to get into scoring position with one out in the frame. Exposito followed with a double past third, which brought around Kalish giving Portland the lead. After Anthony Rizzo struck out, Yamaico Navarro lined a double of his own to left, bringing home Exposito to up the lead to 3-1.

Portland played add-on in the sixth with another set of runs on a Rizzo sacrifice fly and another Navarro RBI double, making it 5-1.

Doubront exited after the sixth inning with his longest start of the season. In six innings of work, the crafty lefty surrendered just a run on five hits despite walking a season-worst four men. Doubront improved to 3-0 with the victory and Portland is now 7-0 when he starts.
The B-Mets had a big scoring chance in the eighth when Evans walked and Lutz doubled to right-center off reliever Ryne Lawson to open the frame. Hubbard followed with a sac fly to center to get within three of the lead. With one away and Lutz still at second, Maldonado singled to center. Lutz tried to score on the base knock but was gunned down at the plate by centerfielder Che-Hsuan Lin, all but quelling the rally.
