Daily Mets Minors Report

Daily Mets Minors Report
Date: 6-25-12
I would up with an unexpected trip in which I was forced to be off-line this past weekend. My apologies.
MLB - Mets:
Jason Bay cleared to begin riding bicycle today. Baseball activity planned next weekend.
6th round pick, 1B Jayce Boyd, signed.

AAA – Buffalo:
33-hit game Monday afternoon… 1B Josh Satin was devilish: 4-5, 3-R, 2-HR, 4-RBI… there’s got to be a place for this bat in Queens… The Durham Bills welcomed SP Mark Cohoon to AAA: 3.2-IP, 8-H, 7-ER, 1-K, 0-BB, 17.18… three RPs in this game now have below-2 ERAs: Manny Acosta (1.54), Elvin Ramirez (1.04), and Pedro Beato (1.47).

AA-Binghamton:
RHP Zack Wheeler (6-3, 1.88) makes his 13th start of the season and second against the SeaWolves. Wheeler took a hard-luck loss in his last start against the Akron Aeros on June 20. A pair of defensive misplays resulted in two runs (one earned) during his six innings on the hill. He struck out three in a game in which the B-Mets were shutout 2-0. The B-Mets had been 7-0 in Wheeler’s last seven starts before their loss to the Aeros. The righty earned his first Double-A win against Erie on April 29. He surrendered just one run on two hits over 5.2 innings. The victory started a six-game winning streak for the Georgia native.
RHP James Avery (8-5, 3.36) makes his team-leading 15th start of the season and third against the B-Mets. The righty is on a three-game winning streak, having defeated the Bowie Baysox in his previous start on June 20. He allowed four runs (one earned) on seven hits, including two home runs, over eight innings. In two starts versus Binghamton, Avery has gone 2-0 with a 0.77 ERA. He has struck out seven and walked six over 11.2 innings and held the B-Mets to a .125 batting average. All five hits allowed have been singles. He was signed by the Detroit Tigers as a minor league free agent in January 2012.
RF Dustin Martin (.239 played 2-levels below) singled in 3B Jefry Marte (.272) and  2B Reese Havens (.197) in the first inning... Havens also hit his 5th home run driving his BA for the first time since opening day…
Score:  11-5… 18 B-Mets hits, 4x-Wilfredo Tovar (.333), 3x-Martin, Juan Lagares (.263)

A+ - St. Lucie: -
Lucy tried to get in a doubleheader in between the tornado warnings… In game one, nothing went right for SP Angel Cuan (1.1-IP, 5-H, 5-R, 0-K, 1-BB, 3.08. Dillon Gee told me once: “in the starts you have two great ones, two for shit and six others that need some help. This wasn’t one of Angel’s best… DH Travis Taijeron (.364) hit his second A+ homer… 2B Rylan Sandoval (.167) also homered in the first, but these all the highlights there were in this first game of a scheduled doubleheader.
Game 2:  1B-DH Alan Dykstra (.500) is wasting little time to remind us that he’s around in case Ike Davis stumbles again. SP Eric Goeddel took a no-hitter into the 5th… RP Jeffrey Walters (0.00) threw two more scoreless innings… lost in the 12th inning…

A – Savannah:
SP Marco Camarena (1.52) continues to have one QS after another… he also had 5-K’s in 5-IP, a far improvement from the 33-K/48.1-IP stats he came in with. Camarena started the season as the ‘long man’ but he’s now a solid member of the Sand Gnats rotation.
Score 2x in top of the ninth but still lost 2-3…

A-Low – Brooklyn:
Alexander Sanchez (.375) is trying to find a position. He’s a natural 1Bman who is also now playing at third and DHing. He also made his 3rd error tonight. I’m very unimpressed at the system’s shoddy defense this year and we’ll keep an eye on Alex and see how he progresses.
It’s easy to be impressed with SP Luis Mateo (5.0-IP, 1-R, 6-K, 0-BB, 0.77), and he now has 16-Ks in 11.2-IP, but let’s remember this guy is 22-yrs old pitching rookie ball. The Mets have to move him faster and, at least, finish the season in Savannah.
Outstanding relief by Paul Seward (2.0-IP, 0-R, 0.00) and Tyler Vanderheiden (1.0-IP, 0-R, 0.00).

Rookie – Kingsport:
SP Akeel Morris got the bump back and impressed early… but then came a 5-run 5th… this was classic Morris last year and he just doesn’t seem to be progessing past 3-4 innings…
Kingsport played eight great innings… problem is they gave up 10 runs in the other inning (this manager may start drinking sonn...) … excellent 3.0 scoreless relief innings by Miller Diaz (0.00).

DSL Mets:
LF Vincente Lupo – 3-5, 2-R, 2B, .379
18-yr. old RHP Jesus Lugo – 5.0-IP, 1-H, 0-R, 3-K, 1-BB, 1.89.0
