GNATS SWEEP DOGS WEDNESDAY


Savannah, GA - After failing to complete a game since Saturday, the Savannah Gnats and Charleston RiverDogs finished two on Wednesday, and the Gnats won both. The Gnats (37-26) won game one, which was the conclusion of a suspended game from Sunday, June 10, 3-1, and the nightcap 3-2 in seven innings. Savannah heads to Rome for the final four games of the South Atlantic League’s first half Thursday through Sunday.

Game one, which began three days ago in Charleston, resumed with the Gnats leading 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning. After the RiverDogs (38-25) evened the game with a run in the fourth, the Gnats snapped a 1-1 tie with two runs in the top of the seventh inning. SS TJ Rivera singled to right to begin the frame and scored the go-ahead run on CF Travis Taijeron’s booming triple to right-center field. Taijeron scored the Gnats’ third run on 1B Brian Harrison’s clean single into centerfield.

Gnats reliever Randy Fontanez permitted an inherited runner to score in the Dogs’ fourth inning, but did not allow another run in his 3.2 innings of work to earn his first win as a Gnat. Jeffrey Walters worked around a hit in the ninth for collect his second save.

In game two, the Gnats built a 2-0 lead with single runs in each of the first two innings. In the first, Rivera doubled home C Cam Maron. In the second, RF Charley Thurber tripled down the rightfield line to plate 1B Brian Harrison.

The Gnats added their third run in the bottom of the fifth on a Maron RBI single.

Twice Charleston closed within a run at 2-1 and at 3-2, but starter Logan Verrett and reliever TJ Chism kept the Dogs from ever pulling into a tie. Verrett struck out eight batter in his 5.2 innings of work.

Rivera had a big day with six hits for the Gnats. He was 3-for-5 in game one and a perfect 3-for-3 in game two with a double and an RBI. Maron was 2-for-3 with an RBI and an run scored in game two to extend his hitting streak to 11 straight games.
