LAST GAME: The B-Mets clinched the regular season Eastern Division title with a 5-3 win over the Bowie Baysox last night at NYSEG Stadium. Allan Dykstra put Binghamton on the board in the first inning with a two-run home run. Xorge Carrillo added an RBI double in the second inning. Bowie came back with a two-run triple from Josh Horton in the fourth, but Travis Taijeron’s solo home run put Binghamton up 4-2. In the sixth, Lew Ford hit a solo home run against Hamilton Bennett. The final run scored in the bottom of the sixth as Taijeron hit an RBI double. Logan Verrett earned his 11th win of the season, and Jeff Walters picked up his 36th save.
BINGHAMTON STARTER: LHP Mark Cohoon makes his 19th start of the season for the B-Mets and first against Akron. He does have two relief appearances against the Aeros; in 2.0 combined innings, he gave up five runs on nine hits. Cohoon has won each of his last five starts, and has not lost since June 5. He is the B-Met franchise leader in wins (23), innings pitched (377.1), and today’s start will give him the franchise record in games started (currently 63). In three August starts, he is 3-0 with a 2.37 ERA. In 107.2 innings pitched, opponents are hitting .305 against the Texas native. He was drafted in the 12th round of the 2008 draft out of North Central Texas College.
AKRON STARTER: RHP Toru Murata makes his 21st start of the season with the Aeros, and first against Binghamton. He received a no-decision in his last start against Reading after allowing two runs in six innings. He has not allowed more than three earned runs in any of his last six starts. In nine starts at home this season, Murata is 2-2 with a 2.60 ERA. The Osaka, Japan native has put up an opponent batting average of .266 in 115.1 innings pitched with the Aeros.
EASTERN DIVISION CHAMPS: Last night’s win clinched the regular season Eastern Division for the B-Mets. They clinched a playoff berth on Saturday night. This is the third regular season division title in their 22-year franchise history, and their first since 2000. They also won it in 1994.
SERIES WIN: Binghamton won their 12th rubber match on Wednesday. They are 12-6 in those games, and now have 25 series wins. Binghamton has won their last six series.
81 WINS: Binghamton’s 81 wins are the most in franchise history since 2000. In 1994, 1998, and 2000 the team won 82 games, which is the most in franchise history.
VS. AKRON: Thursday is the first game against Akron since May 15. They are 7-3 against the Aeros, and 3-1 at Canal Park. Their only other trip to Akron was the first four games of the regular season.
TAIJERON’S XBH: Travis Taijeron has collected 48 hits in 56 games for the B-Mets this season. Of his 48 knocks, 29 of them have been for extra bases. In August, 12 of his 17 hits have been either a double or a home run. Since being promoted on June 8, Taijeron’s 29 XBH are ranked 5th in the league.
AUGUST PITCHING NUMBERS: Despite a .231 team batting average in August, Binghamton is 14-6 during this month. The pitching staff has led the way, posting a league-best 2.39 ERA in the month.
DYKSTRA’S CAREER-HIGH: Allan Dykstra blasted a two-run home run in the first inning of last night’s win. The blast gave him career-highs in home runs (20) and RBI (79). In 2011, he hit 19 home runs and drove in 77 runs with the B-Mets.
SAVE RECORD: Jeff Walters picked up his 36th save in last night’s win. The save tied him with Tim Lavigne for the most saves in franchise history. Lavigne pitched for the B-Mets from 2002-2005, and in 2008.
NEXT GAME PREVIEW: The B-Mets continue their four-game series against the Aeros on Friday night. First pitch is at 7:05 PM, as the B-Mets send RHP Erik Goeddel to the mound against Akron’s Brett Brach.
