West Virginia 4 - Savannah 2
Power Stop Gnats 4-2 Friday
Savannah, GA – Home again after their longest road trip of the season, the Savannah Sand Gnats dropped a 4-2 decision to the West Virginia Power Friday night to open a four-game series. 3B Jeff Reynolds was 1-for-1 with two walks and a HBP to reach base safely in all four of his plate appearances for Savannah.
The Power (37-24/74-56) lit up Luis Cessa for three runs in the fourth inning to take a lead they would not relinquish. SS Max Moroff began the frame with a solo homerun to right to put the Power up 1-0. DH Jordan Steranka later tripled home a run and CF Raul Fortunato doubled him home.
Cessa did not allow a run outside of the fourth inning. He finished six innings with five strikeouts and no walks, but was charged with his fourth loss of 2013.
West Virginia righthander Luis Heredia shut out the Gnats through five innings on three hits with six strikeouts.
The Gnats (28-29/71-55) drew within one run in the seventh inning against the Power bullpen. After a walk and a hit-by-pitch, C Jeff Glenn ripped a single into left field on the 12th pitch of his at bat to drive home two runs to make the score 3-2.
West Virginia added a run in the ninth against reliever Wanel Mesa on an RBI single by LF Jonathan Schwind.
The Gnats and Power play a doubleheader beginning at 5:05 on Saturday night. RHP Tim Peterson (0-0, 5.19) will take on RHP Clay Holmes (5-6, 4.09) while LHP Steven Matz (4-6, 2.64) will take on Kyle Haynes (1-3, 2.24) in the nightcap.
