Rider Ignites Power Sunday
Savannah, GA – The number nine hitter in the West Virginia Power batting order, Jimmy Rider provided the spark by going 4-for-4 with a go-ahead three-run homerun as the Power came from behind to defeat the Savannah Sand Gnats 4-3 Sunday afternoon at Historic Grayson Stadium.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, with the Gnats leading 3-1, after a single and a walk, Rider lofted his second home run of the year over the wall in the left field corner, a three run jack that put the Power ahead 4-3. Rider, who entered the day 1-for-18, scored two runs and drove home three to go along with his four hits.
The Gnats scored all three of their runs Sunday on plays without hits, using two walks with the bases loaded and a hit-by-pitch. In the first inning, 1B Cole Frenzel and LF Stefan Sabol drew bases loaded walks to drive in runs. In the fifth, Frenzel was hit by a pitch, to drive home the third Savannah run for a 3-1 lead.
The Power got a run back in the third inning to pull within a run at 2-1. 3B Jimmy Rider doubled and scored on RF Walker Gourley’s RBI single to right.
Savannah starter Seth Lugo was charged with his first loss of 2013 for allowing four runs on nine hits in his seven innings.
The Gnats are off on Monday and after a three-game road trip to Rome Tuesday through Thursday, return home for their final regular season series Friday against the Greenville Drive.
The Gnats begin the playoffs on the road at the home of the second half winner on Wednesday, September 4. Savannah will host game two on Friday, September 6, and if necessary, Saturday, September 7.
