LAST GAME: The Akron Aeros defeated the Binghamton Mets, 4-3 in 11 innings last night. Giovanny Urshela singled home the game-winning run against Armando Rodriguez to give the B-Mets an extra-inning loss. For the second straight night, Binghamton never led in the game. Akron scored in the bottom of first inning against Erik Goeddel. Goeddel allowed three runs in six innings. Brett Brach also allowed three runs, but threw 7.1 innings. Wilfredo Tovar, Travis Taijeron, and Blake Forsythe each drove in a run. Binghamton was limited to five hits. Shawn Armstrong earned the win after recording just one out. Akron has now won each of the first two games of the series.
BINGHAMTON STARTER: LHP Darin Gorski makes his 12th start of the season for the B-Mets and first against the Aeros. In his last start he got a no-decision against the Bowie Baysox. In seven innings, he allowed one run on six base hits in a game Binghamton would eventually win, 4-3. Four of his last five starts have lasted at least 7.0 innings, with the longest being a complete game on July 25 against the Trenton Thunder. In seven road starts, he is 1-0 with a 2.15 ERA. Opponents are hitting .186 against the lefty in 64.0 innings pitched. In 2012 he made three starts against the Aeros, and went 2-0 with a 1.96 ERA. The Mets drafted Gorski in the seventh round of the 2009 draft out of Kutztown University (PA).
AKRON STARTER: RHP Will Roberts makes his 21st start of the season for the Aeros and first against Binghamton. In his last start, he gave up six runs in four innings in a no-decision against the Erie Seawolves. His last win was July 27 against Richmond; he is winless in his last four starts. In 123.0 innings pitched, opponents are hitting .280 against him. In 10 starts at Canal Park, he is 5-4 with a 3.80 ERA. He was drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the fifth round of the 2011 draft out of the University of Virginia.
WALKING OFF: Giovany Urshela’s game-winning single in the eleventh inning was the sixth walk-off defeat for the B-Mets this season. They are 5-6 in those games in 2013, and are 3-5 in extra innings. Each of the three games Binghamton has played lasting longer than 10 innings has resulted in a loss.
HIT DIFFERENCE: Binghamton has allowed at least 10 hits in each of the last five games. They have been outhit by their opponents in seven of their last eight games, and have six hits or less in eight of their last 13 games. Binghamton is 2-3 over their last five games.
81 WINS: Binghamton’s 81 wins are the most in franchise history since 2000. In 1994, 1998, and 2000 the team won 82 games, which is the most in franchise history.
THREE STRAIGHT LOSSES: On Saturday, Binghamton will look to avoid losing three straight games for the second time this season. The B-Mets’ longest losing streak this season is 3, only done once from May 1-3.
SINCE COMING BACK: Since re-joining the B-Mets on August 6th, Cory Vaughn has driven in 15 runs in 17 games. He played 46 games for the B-Mets before going on the DL with a right elbow strain.
AUGUST PITCHING NUMBERS: Despite a league-worst .222 team batting average in August, Binghamton is 14-8 during this month. The pitching staff has led the way, posting a league-best 2.45 ERA in the month. 14 wins are tied with Richmond for the most wins in the league.
IT’S THE WEEKEND: Binghamton has had most of their success on Saturdays and Sundays. On Saturdays, they are 16-4. On Sundays, they are 16-6. On weekdays they are 49-41.
NEXT GAME PREVIEW: The B-Mets and Aeros conclude their four-game series on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is at 2:05 PM as Binghamton sends RHP Greg Peavey to the mound against RHP Cody Anderson for Akron.
