Carlos Beltran on returning to NYC –

This is the second free agent outfielder that has said he can see a future in playing next year in CitiField. The other is Cincinnati’s Shin-Soo Choo who said earlier that he’d love to play in a city like New York that had such a large Korean population.
There’s lots of good news here. Players don’t answer questions like this unless they really want the team they are talking about to eventually respond. I’m going to assume that Sandy Alderson is going to make some kind of effort to sign one of either Marlon Byrd, Jacoby Ellsbury, Choo, and Beltran. My hope is, at least, one of these come to fruition.
These are the drums I have been beating for months now, so there’s no reason to keep breaking out the numbers and amount of years these deals should be. Just be thrilled that Beltran made these comments.
Hopefully, he’s said the same thing to his agent.
“Angels are expected to replace either general manager Jerry Dipoto or manager Mike Scioscia before start of next season.”
Okay, this is my opinion again…
I would rather have Scioscia than Terry Collins as the 2014 Mets manager. That doesn’t mean I would want Collins fired from the organization, nor does it mean I wouldn’t keep him as manager for one more year if Scioscia wasn’t available or interested.
I hate this no contract bullshit that is going on right now and I have no faith in the decisions TC is making because of this. It’s hard to play for the future when you may not even have any yourself.
I also love Collins over Wally Backman who I see as never surviving the pressure from the Mets front office, fans, twitter feed, and beat press bullshit. I can easily see him ramming his fist down the throat of piss ant reporter Andy Martino and winding up behind bars once again.
Collins was so good when he ran the Extended Camp and it’s a shame that ego would probably prevent him from accepting a ‘demotion’ like this.
Sandy Alderson’s contract runs out at the end of 2014 (team option 2015). Collins deserves to reap the benefits of 2014 (if there are any) and all of this would make more sense if everyone was legally in place for the same amount of time; however, guys like Scioscia don’t come available every day and now may be the time to lock him up for the next 3-4 years.
Frank Francisco pitched another rehab inning on Friday morning in the GCL Mets game. Am I missing something here? Why is this turd still wearing a Mets uniform? The last time I heard anything about the six million dollar man was when he tried to talk Jenrry Mejia into doggin’ it and staying on the DH/extended camp list and just cashing his major league check. I had also been told by ‘unnamed sources’ that he’s been a bad influence on P Hansel Robles (who doesn’t need any help in that area). Anyway, back to the main subject… are the Mets planning on bringing this guy back to Queens before the season ends?
Kevin Goldstein was asked that question earlier this month and I loved his answer… “Homer Simpson has a better chance of making it back to CitiField.”
So, exactly what is going on here? Is there a chance some team out there has asked the Mets to get this dude game ready before agreeing to pick up the remainder of his contract? Is there a ‘player to be named later’ in this for us?
I’m completely friggin’ lost on this one.

It sure looks like the Dice-HR experiment could end with one start. We’ll have to wait this one out, but the Mets brain trust may have to rethink the proper usage of Carlos Torres in the month of September.
You already know my stance on the rest of the season… put up the best face you can without risking any of your core players (especially David Wright) and do whatever you can to limp home with one of the nine worst records. Going into Friday’s games, they were tied (with Seattle) for the 13th worst (67 loses). There were eight teams that ranged from 71-85 and four tied with 70. The Mets are literally two series away from being guaranteed a top pick in the draft.
The question remains is if we should be rooting this way. I am, but that’s just me.

Ex-New York Knick Dean ‘The Dream’ Meminger was found dead inside a Harlem hotel room. He was 65 years old. He was actually born around 30 miles from where I live now, in Walterboro, South Carolina, but attended Rice High School in New York. The Knicks drafted him as the 16th overall pick in the 1971 draft and played for my home team from 1971-74. The cause of death right now is undetermined but this has bad news written all over it.

I'm with you. I'm rooting for some loses and a protected top draft pick. Lets keep Dice K on the mound.
Put schwindin in the rotation. That should put us in the top five of draft.
First, Mack, I find it interesting that you put Byrd in a class with Beltran, Choo and Ellsbury. I have been talking up resigning Marlon (and not only because I caught his HR ball a few weeks ago) because I think he's earned it and I think he'll come for less than the others. I'd be ecstatic if Sandy signed one of the other three to fill out the outfield, or if he would trade for a big bopper like CarGo, Giancarlo or Bautista. (Hold on while I take another puff of this joint.)
I think you are dreaming when you talk about getting a protected pick for next year's draft. They have made several improvements since the start of the season and have jelled as a team with the youth movement leading the way. Unfortunately, I think they will play .500 ball the rest of the season, and finish up around the middle of the pack. That means no protection, and I seriously wonder if Alderson will sign an elite outfielder who has been made a qualifying offer. I fear that Ellsbury and Choo will be in that category, maybe Beltran and Nelson Cruz too. This will be an interesting off-season.
I seriously doubt he'll sign any player with a qualifying offer and completely expect him to go the trade route instead. He'll most likely resign Bryd and trade some arms for another bat.
Lets face it, how many positions on the field could use an upgrade?
SS, LF, possibly first base if Davis isn't handed the position again.
A bold move would be to trade Davis and a solid starter like Niese or Gee to a team looking to make a playoff run. Some low to mid market team who can get a potential slugger in Davis and a solid ML starter in one move for a modest increase in payroll. Kind of like what the Royals did last year by trading for Shields.
The Mets should get the young bats their looking for and not risk the first rounder.
Lets also remember that the Mets' FO has now picked three HS kids with their first rounder. So losing one for 2014 wouldn't exactly be the end of the world in a deep draft. Nimmo, their 2011 first rounder, looks to finally make the ML squad in 2016. Their 2014 probably would have the same trajectory. Are we going to cry over a player who won't be on the Mets until 2019???

Beltran and Ellsbury should be the top targets. Free agents and their reps know the Mets will have money to spend again. Now, the Mets are gaining national attention as an up and coming team, if not THE up and coming team. When ESPN is forced to acknowledge that the tide could be turning in NY baseball you know things are looking up for us.
I think Sciocia needs to be the manager. Collins is a transitional figure and now we need a wartime consigliere. Kick Terry back upstairs and give him a raise as a thank you for overseeing and suffering the slings and arrows, but dont let him run the show next year. The Mets are constructing a championship caliber team and they need a championship caliber manager. Besides, Mikey S. owes us for that bomb he hit off Doc in '88.
I would keep Dice K and let him throw a few more. I'd also give him the chance to be Thor's placeholder in 2014 as the #5.
As much as I'm excited about our prospects for next year it took watching a real playoff team last night in the Tigers to put things in prospective. When Cabrera unloaded that bomb in the 2nd inning you knew the game was over and it unfortunately reminded me of many games in the past when you could feel the air just get sucked out of the stadium (or field in this case). Imfamous names like Pendleton, Jordan, Scioscia, Molina and a pesky fella named Chipper to name a few so what does all this mean?.....we better have some REAL good pitching top to bottom come next year if hope to have any chance because in over 50 years of Mets baseball we have NEVER produced a position player that could come remotely close (sorry Straw you fell way short) to producing like Cabrera and he's got Fielder behind him having an off year with "only" 20 hr's and 88 rbi. My question for the war room would be as this off season approaches do we have faith in the F.O. to do what is necessary to elevate us into a playoff caliber team.
