The Top 36 Shortstops in the 2014 MLB Draft

SS

1.       Trae Turner

5-23-13 - Trea Turner has taken a long path to likely top 10 pick and possible #1 overall pick in the 2014 MLB Draft. He was a little-known late riser as a senior from a south Florida high school that passed on a six figure offer from the Pirates as a 20th round pick. I talked to him earlier this season after a solid game early in his return from an ankle injury. He described how he knew he was just a physically weaker, slap-hitting, one dimensional prospect in high school that couldn't get calls returned from his dream school, Florida State. Some elite athletes aren't developed when they turn 18 and especially the slim-bodied, up-the-middle type athletes often have to add some bulk and develop physically before it all comes together.  LINK

5-22-13 - Trea Turner, SS, North Carolina State - Maybe the most exciting player in college, Turner is a burner who is also showing power this year. The 6’-1”, 185-pound right-hander led the nation in stolen bases last year with 57 and was caught just four times. He also hit .336 with a .436 OBP and struck out just 38 times in 63 games. This year, he has recorded a hit and scored a run in all 11 Wolfpack games. He is hitting .477 (21-for-44) with 21 runs, five doubles, three home runs, five stolen bases and has struck out just twice. He may not end up at shortstop at the next level, but offensive talent and plus speed will make him an everyday regular. LINK

6-9-13  -   2.Trea Turner, SS (NC State): Strong hit tool and approach with plus speed up the middle, all of which make up for just around solid power potential. http://www.minorleaguerundown.com/2013/06/09/2014-mlb-draft-top-30-prospects/

6-10-13 -  Trea Turner, SS, North Carolina State - Turner is the most dynamic player in the country.  He came to national attention with his great baserunning and speed, but has shown that there is much more to his game.  He should be one of the first players selected in 2014. http://bigleaguefutures.net/1/2013/06/10/2014-mlb-draft-early-college-names-to-know/

6-11-13 - 6. Trea Turner, SS, N.C. State: He's a shortstop who can stay there, a leadoff hitter extraordinaire with plus-plus speed that allowed him to steal 84 bases in his first two seasons of college ball. http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20130611&content_id=50293726&vkey=news_mlb&c_id=mlb&tcid=tw_article_50293726

6-13-13  -  3. Milwaukee Brewers — Trea Tuner, SS, North Carolina State - Probably the most electric and exciting player in the 2014 MLB draft, the 6’-2” right-hander has shown the range, arm and instincts to stick at shortstop, including plays like this. Offensively, his speed is his best tool and he should be a major threat on the base paths at the next level. He also has a great approach at the plate and should hit for a high average, as well. He showed developing power this season and, if he continues to do so, Troy Tulowitzki comps will be coming. Hit .336 as a freshman and led the nation in stolen bases with 57. Over 51 injury shortened games this season, he hit .377 with 12 doubles, seven home runs, 27 stolen bases and drew 35 walks to 30 strikeouts for a .464 OBP/.578 SLG. http://beforeitsnews.com/sports/2013/06/2014-mlb-mock-draft-1-0-no-time-like-the-present-2513748.html?currentSplittedPage=2

6-22-13  -  Player:  Trea Turner   Position:  SS   School:  NC State   Height/Weight:  6’1/175  Bats/Throws:  R/R   2014 Class:  College Junior   Previously Drafted:  2011, 20th rd, Pirates Scouting Report: from Don Olsen on 6/18/2013 - Trea is a slender ideal frame, athletic lean, with decent overall development. He should sit 180-190 pounds as he matures; definitely see a bit more lower half development.  He has a little bit of load, with some uplift.  This is a minor issue as he has the blend of rhythm and bat speed to make contact concerns die off. Good balance and weight transfer with lower half torque in the swing.  Short compact path with good bat head control, drops the barrel with a mistake for pull power at this stage.  Shows solid plate coverage, good gap power, stays back on decent breaks, sound approach.  He can get a good amount of backspin on pulled balls, so seen power improvements over multiple views this spring.  On the paths, I have caught 3.85 – 4.0 down the line and 2.79 – 3.0 from 1st to 2nd.  His instinct on the path is already mature, picks a part pitchers timing and triggers quickly.  Soft hands, range to left and right is good, arm to carry, footwork around the bag and transfer is sound.  He has cleaned up footwork on catch, set, release, but it can be a point of growth in his game.

6-24-13   -  SS: Trea Turner, North Carolina State - A repeat member of this squad, Turner impressed me as much with his rare insightfulness as with his special baseball ability. Sure, he’s an electrifying player, with game-changing speed, a lightning-quick bat and the ability to dazzle on occasion at shortstop. But UCLA coach John Savage rightfully gushed about Turner’s analytical skills after Turner broke down Nick Vander Tuig’s performance against the Wolfpack. So Turner gets the nod over three other players who were a joy to watch this year, LSU’s Alex Bregman, Texas A&M’s Mikey Reynolds and Cal State Fullerton’s Richy Pedroza. http://www.baseballamerica.com/college/tony-kemp-leads-2013-all-fitt-team/

6-28-13 - Trea Turner, SS, NC State: - The linchpin of the offense of a College World Series NC State club, Turner can do it all on the diamond and is sure to be in high demand next summer. A plus defender at shortstop, Turner has lateral burst, balance, soft hands and an aptitude for the diving play. He also possesses a quick release that helps his above average strength play up. He's a pro-ready defender and should be a highlight real with the glove at the next level. http://www.crawfishboxes.com/2013/6/28/4450674/the-way-too-early-2014-tcb-astros-draft-board

7-17-13 –  Trea Turner SS, NC State - Turner oozes athleticism and upside at SS.  He's still very lean and looks like he has some room to pack on some muscle without losing some of his tremendous speed, which rates as top-of-the line 80 on the scouting scale.  He was very quick at SS, ranging well to each direction and showing a strong arm.  Turner didn't hit the ball particularly well on these particular days (in fact, he went 0 for 9) but does have a smooth stroke that should hit for average along with a good eye at the plate.  He's a top 5 talent and has perhaps even a chance at #1 overall considering position value and his all-around skill set. http://www.chicagonow.com/cubs-den/2013/07/looking-ahead-to-the-2014-and-2015-mlb-draft-notes-from-the-collegiate-national-team-games/

7-21-13 - Cuba’s Norge Ruiz dominated his first time through the order, striking out five of the first nine batters faced. The second time through the order got off to a strong start for Team USA as Trea Turner (NC State) opened the fourth with a base hit to left center. LSU’s Alex Bregman followed with a base knock to give Team USA a pair of base runners. With one out and runners on the corners, Michael Conforto (Oregon State) broke the scoreless tie with a sacrifice fly to left. http://ht.ly/2yvWIz

8-14-13 – Through The Fence – Top 50 Prospects – 2. Trea Turner, SS, NC State - The 2013 MLB draft lacked depth up the middle. Turner, a 6’-1” right-hander, is a fantastic defender with outstanding range and a strong arm. His elite speed, advanced approach at the plate and ability to drive the ball to all fields make him one of the more exciting players in college and, once he gets on base, don’t blink. Over 56 games as a sophomore, he hit .368/.455/.553 with 30 stolen bases and drew 38 walks to just 30 strikeouts. He also hit seven home runs, showing developing power. As a freshman, he led the nation in stolen bases with 57 and was only thrown out four times. http://throughthefencebaseball.com/2014-mlb-draft-top-50-prospects/36463#mwWwsFxSUZy7YC5V.99

Top 5 MLB Draft Prospects - #2. Trea Turner, SS (NC State): Heavy-duty hit tool and method with plus speed up the middle, all of which make up for just around compact power potential. In all probability the most power-driven and exhilarating player in the 2014 MLB draft, the 6’-2” right-hander has presented the range, arm and makeups to stick at shortstop. Offensively, his speed is his finest tool and he should be a major menace on the base paths at the next level. He also has a pronounced methodology at the plate and should hit for a high average, as well. He displayed increasing power this season and, if he continues to do so, Troy Tulowitzki comparisons will be impending. Hit .336 as a freshman and led the nation in stolen bases with 57. Over 51 injury condensed games this season, he hit .377 with 12 doubles, seven home runs, 27 stolen bases and drew 35 walks to 30 strikeouts for a .464 OBP/.578 SLG.  http://bigleaguefutures.net/1/2013/08/30/top-5-mlb-draft-prospects/

9-1-13 - Jim Callis – 4. Trea Turner, ss, North Carolina State - More than just a burner, he also offers hitting prowess and the ability to stick at shortstop.

9-4-13 – Mack’s Mock Draft v1.0 – 4 – Cubs -  SS Trea Turner – North Carolina State – Turner could easily go 1-2 with his fellow Wolfpack, P Carlos Rodon. Has all 5-tools,  especially speed and the ability to stick at shortstop. Compared to Troy Tulowitzki. This is about as good as a draftable SS can be.

9-27-13 - Jim Callis - The 2014 Draft is a solid group that impresses scouts more than the 2012 and 2013 talent pools. College pitching is always a prized commodity, and there's plenty behind Rodon, starting with right-handers Jeff Hoffman (East Carolina) and Tyler Beede (Vanderbilt). There's more velocity this year in the high school ranks, with righty Tyler Kolek (Shepherd, Texas, HS) leading the way with a consistent upper-90s fastball. The pitchers stand out more than the position players, though there are plenty of intriguing bats. Catcher/outfielder Alex Jackson (Rancho Bernardo HS, San Diego) and shortstop Jacob Gatewood (Clovis, Calif., HS) offer plenty of power, while Trea Turner (North Carolina State) has uncommon speed and is a rare collegian who should be able to play shortstop in the Majors. http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20130927&content_id=61864804&c_id=

9-29-13 – XMLBScout – 11.)SS, Trea Turner, N C State, 6' 180, R/R, swift runner with a quick bat and occ power to the alleys, has enough glove and arm to be a starter at the ML level and contribute offensively with his 70 speed. Trea has a compact swing that generates alley power and he's getting better every year. Reminds me some of JJ Hardy. Definite early round guy for 2014! http://xmlbscout.angelfire.com/

9-30-13 – TTF Mock 2.0 - 2. Miami Marlins — Trea Turner, SS, North Carolina State There are a lot of players who could go second-overall but I like Turner, a 6’-1” right-hander with plus/plus speed, an excellent approach at the plate and a kid who will remain at a premium position due to his silly range, strong arm and instincts on the field. An alumni of Team USA Baseball, he is a franchise-type player and should be a huge fan favorite. http://throughthefencebaseball.com/2014-mlb-mock-draft-2-0-draft-order-set/38280#5E3F5j1jWOgE69bJ.99

10-6-13 – Kendall Rogers/PG – College Prospects - 3. Trea Turner, ss, North Carolina State (Drafted: 2011, Pirates -- 20th round) - If there’s a position player who could vault to the top of the draft in 2014, Turner is a very good bet at this point. Turner is a 6-foot-1, 171-pounder, with exceptional speed. Turner has good offensive skills and some pop in his bat. In the field, there are some who believe Turner is an outfielder at the next level. However, he has shown good balance and a strong arm at shortstop, and most believe he’ll stay there. http://www.perfectgame.org/Articles/View.aspx?article=9081

10-9-13 – Early Pick for Cubs - Trea Turner, SS, North Carolina State - If the speedy right-hander is still available when the Cubs are on the clock, you could be reading about their future shortstop and leadoff man. At 6’-”1 and 170 pounds, Turner is the best base-stealer in the 2014 MLB draft and is also one of the best hitters. More than 56 games as a sophomore, he hit .368/.455/.553 with 30 stolen bases and drew 38 walks to just 30 strikeouts. He also hit seven home runs, showing developing power. As a freshman, he led the nation in stolen bases with 57 and was only thrown out four times. His unreal range, strong arm and instincts will allow him to remain at shortstop and, even though Javier Baez looks like he should remain at shortstop, you can never have enough shortstop prospects in your system. Plus, I think Turner would be able to handle centerfield or second base if needed. The Cubs have plenty of power hitters in their system. What they lack is leadoff-type guys who can get on, steal bases and set the table for the thumpers. Turner is that guy and a future lineup with Baez, Albert Almora, Kris Bryant, Jorge Soler and Turner make me giggle. http://throughthefencebaseball.com/2014-mlb-draft-early-targets-chicago-cubs-fourth-overall-pick/38723

10-14-13 – Top ’14 College Hitters - 2. Trea Turner / SS / NC State — Turner was outstanding over his sophomore campaign, but an ankle injury essentially ruined his Team USA experience this summer. Turner’s speed is élite, and with above-average pitch recognition and hand-eye coordination, many scouts believe he is a future prototypical leadoff hitter. Defensively he was outstanding in 2013 as well, using his speed to make plays to his left and right with above-average arm strength for the position. Don’t be surprised to see Turner go off the board in the first five picks of the 2014 draft. http://mlbdraftinsider.com/2013/10/top-14-for-14-college-hitters/

10-15-13 – Baseball America - 4. Trea Turner, ss, North Carolina State: Ankle issue hampered him in 2013, but he offers bat speed, athleticism and top-of-the-scale speed when healthy. http://www.baseballamerica.com/college/2014-draft-top-50-october-2013-carlos-rodon/

10-21-13 - Summary:  Trea Turner is going to be an impact player on both sides of the ball.  He would be an explosive leadoff man on any team.  He also has enough power that they can’t cheat in on him without him burning them.  He will be a game changer when he makes it to the next level. http://bigleaguefutures.net/1/2013/10/20/scouting-report-trea-turner-ss-north-carolina-state/

11-19-13 - Trea Turner (SS) - College: NC State - Though I am almost 100% sure he will not be available by the time the Cardinals pick, I still decided to break him down. He is in the top five of the draft when it comes to speed, but some scouts, including ESPN’s Keith Law, have their doubts about his ability with the bat. Despite the doubts, he hit .368 with 7 home runs, 42 RBI and was 30 for 36 on stolen bases last season for the Wolf Pack. At 6’2″, 170 pounds, especially with a professional training staff, he has room to grow and add bulk which will help add power to his bat in the future. He has top-of-the-order, game-changing speed which equates to stolen bases on the base paths and above-average range in the field. If other teams doubt the projectability of his bat at the professional level and skip on him, the Cardinals would be ecstatic to snag him with their late first round pick. This is wishful thinking, though. I have seen some mock drafts having him go as high as second overall, while some have him dropping back into the 20th-25th overall pick range. Yet, he really would look great with the “Birds on the Bat” across his chest. http://stlcupofjoe.com/2013/11/19/2014-mlb-draft-five-prospects-to-keep-an-eye-on-part-2/

11-27-13 – Big League Futures Top 25 Poll –   4 Trea Turner    SS North Carolina State http://bigleaguefutures.net/1/2013/11/26/mlb-draft-top-25-prospects-poll/

B/R – 11-21-13 - 3. Chicago White Sox: Trea Turner, SS, North Carolina State - At 6’2”, 175 pounds, Turner is excellent athlete with legitimate 80-grade speed—yes, he’s fully healthy after dealing with a severe ankle sprain for most of the 2013 season—and the defensive chops to stick at shortstop long term. At the plate, the right-handed hitter shows above-average bat speed with a smooth swing but lacks consistent over-the-fence pop. Still, his wheels and base running savvy should make him a consistent extra-base threat at the highest level. Turner’s plate discipline and approach are both highly advanced for his age and should give him the chance to reach his hit-tool ceiling at the next level. And with a strong junior campaign alongside teammate Carlos Rodon, he has the potential to be the first position player to come off the board. http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1860341-2014-mlb-mock-draft-early-first-round-projections-for-all-30-teams/page/10

12-9-13 – Pine Tar Press  -  7- SS Trea Turner NC State 6/30/93- Plus speed guy who will join his Wolfpack teammate as a top 10 pick.  He has all of the intangibles of a great offensive weapon including plate awareness, and a solid line drive swing.  He should be able to stick at SS but should also be viewed as a potential CF. (Mariners @ 6) http://pinetarpress.com/early-look-2014-mlb-draft/

2.       Jacob Gatewood

Jacob Gatewood, SS, Clovis (Calif.) High - Perkin likens Gatewood (6-foot-5, 190 pounds) to a young Troy Tulowitzki and calls him a "once-in-a-decade talent," noting his fastball reaches 92 mph on the mound, his "ballet-like fielding skills" and his prodigious power. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/mlb/news/20130610/draft-prospects-carlos-rodon/#ixzz2WWk0FqzU

6-9-13  -  13.Jacob Gatewood, SS/OF/P (California HS): Another strong all-around bat from the high school class. Not sure he avoids a shift to 3rd base considering his size (6’5″, 190 lbs.). http://www.minorleaguerundown.com/2013/06/09/2014-mlb-draft-top-30-prospects/

6-13-13 - Jacob Gatewood, Clovis (Calif.), Right-Handed Pitcher - At 6-foot-4 and 190 pounds, Gatewood has the right frame to be either a pitcher of position player at the next level. He showed his hitting skills at the Area Code Games last summer, but he has also posted a 5-1 record this year with a 2.02 ERA for Clovis. Batted .320 this year, but has plenty of projection as a power hitter. http://www.maxpreps.com/news/article.aspx?articleid=7c0ad513-b5e1-4ac1-b57e-8dedcc72c783&page=4

6-13-13  -  9. Los Angeles Angels — Jacob Gatewood, OF, Clovis HS (CA) - At 6’-4” and 200 pounds, the right-hander generates a ton of power due to his excellent bat speed and he also has a canon arm that has been clocked in the low/mid-90s. He plays shortstop now, but with his size, a move to the hot corner seems likely and his arm and bat would more than play well there. Not fast, he is a very good athlete and there is still a good amount of projection left. Committed to USC. http://beforeitsnews.com/sports/2013/06/2014-mlb-mock-draft-1-0-no-time-like-the-present-2513748.html?currentSplittedPage=2

6-30-13 - Jheremy Brown ‏@JBrownPG   - If you make a mistake to 2014 SS Jacob Gatewood (Clovis, CA), he will make you pay. 1st AB here was prime example, HR to LCF.

6-28-13 - Jacob Gatewood, SS, Clovis HS (Fresno, CA): - People love prep shortstops, and Jacob Gatewood is one to dream on. At 6'5", 190 lbs., with plenty of room to fill in, he may outgrow shortstop, but he'll get every chance to stick there, as he's an outstanding athlete who could provide double-digit home runs from the position. Plus arm strength; quick, soft hands... you're sold on him before you see him bat. And then he bats, and it's a thing of beauty. Balanced at the plate, he generates terrific bat speed with loose, quick hands. He squares the ball up and drives it. He and Alex Jackson will be this year's Frazier/Meadows - expect comparisons right up until draft day. http://www.crawfishboxes.com/2013/6/28/4450674/the-way-too-early-2014-tcb-astros-draft-board

7-2-13  -  2014 Top 100 High School Prospects - 5. Jacob Gatewood SS, Clovis (CA) HS - Huge power potential. Has all the tools. Has the potential to end the year as the #1 HS player in the country. http://www.ninebaseball.org/Wordpress/jeff-sullivans-top-100-2014-prospects/

7-24-13  -  2. Jacob Gatewood, ss/3b/of, Clovis (Calif.) High/SGV Arsenal - The 6-foot-5, 190-pound Gatewood has a lanky, projectable physique with a high waist and long limbs. He uses a toe tap, pronounced weight transfer and quick hands to generate some of the best raw power in the class. Gatewood put on a show in batting practice, hitting balls off the batter’s eye in center field and into the trees well beyond left field. He has an aggressive, pull-oriented approach. Gatewood has a strong arm and has displayed low-90s velocity on the mound . A shortstop currently, Gatewood’s size will likely push him off the position, as will his average-to-tick above speed. The Southern California signee has a strong chance to become a first-round pick like his father, Henry, the 11th selection in the January 1982 draft. http://www.baseballamerica.com/draft/tyler-koleks-heavy-fastball-among-tournament-of-stars-standouts/

7-25-13 – Top 30 High School Prospects For 2014 Draft - 1. Jacob Gatewood, SS, Clovis HS (CA) - 6'3/175, R/R, Draft Day Age: 18.70, USC commit, Full Report & Video - Quick Take: Lanky, projectable shortstop likely moves to third base professionally but would be above average there defensively and has easy plus raw power for a complete package that, with some offensive adjustments, could rival 2012 #1 overall pick SS Carlos Correa (Astros). http://sbb.scout.com/2/1310090.html

8-3-13 - Jacob Gatewood   Primary Position:  SS   Secondary Position(s):  OF   Height/Weight:  6’4/190  Bats/Throws:  R/R  Home Town:  Clovis, CA  School:  Clovis  Travel Team(s):  San Diego Show  Class of:  2014  Committed To:  Southern California  - 2012 Tournament of Stars Notes from Don Olsen: - Good lateral agility, plus arm strength with carry and accuracy.  Shows fast twitch ability, but lateral range may force a transition to 3B or RF.  Elite bat speed, gets a ton of backspin on the ball.  He shows extremely loud pop and the ball jumps off the bat in a hurry. Jacob has power to all fields; sound pull power and can turn on very good velocity.  Bat path is ideal and compact rotational swing that should hit for contact and power, both could be plus with his approach.  He has a nice first step burst and not a baseclogger, long gated and should sit around average speed as he matures. http://bigleaguefutures.net/1/2013/08/03/2014-mlb-draft-profile-jacob-gatewood/

8-5-14 - Kendall Rogers ‏@KendallRogersPG  - #USC commit, top #MLBDraft prospect RT @DavidRawnsleyPG:  Jacob Gatewood hits balls in BP that the shaggers in OF just turn around and watch.

8-8-13 - Todd Gold ‏@TGold_PG  - While he's had timing issues at the plate 2014 SS Jacob Gatewood (Clovis, CA) has crazy pop, just slapped ball off back foot 91 mph off bat. Also, his in-game defensive actions and athleticism have been a pleasant surprise. Guys Jacob Gatewood's size rarely move that well.

8-10-13 - New Balance Area Code games - The A’s still had their two big players remaining in Jacob Gatewood (CA) and Derek Hill (CA). Gatewood crushed two balls right back up the middle but couldn’t buy a base hit today. One was right at the pitcher who caught it and tossed it over to the first and the other hit the pitcher's foot and deflected at the second baseman who gathered it and threw Gatewood out. Gatewood has showed timing issues this week with a lot of swings and misses but when he makes hard contact, the ball explodes off of his bat. Gatewood has also showed good athleticism and body control at shortstop -- especially for his size -- and has continued to show off his strong arm. http://prospectinsider.com/view/2013-area-codes:-day-4-notes/

8-14-13 – Through The Fence – Top 50 Prospects – 4. Jacob Gatewood, SS, Clovis HS (CA) - Gatewood is quickly becoming the most drooled over prep prospect in the 2014 MLB draft. At 6’-5” and 190 pounds, the right-hander shows big-time power potential and excellent bat speed. He won the Junior Home Run Derby at Citi Field, slugging 13 home runs — three of them reaching the third deck. He also has a canon arm and has been clocked in the low/mid 90s. A shortstop now, his size and power could move him to third where all of his tools would play well. He could go first overall with his upside. Committed to USC. http://throughthefencebaseball.com/2014-mlb-draft-top-50-prospects/36463#mwWwsFxSUZy7YC5V.99

8-13-13 - The Perfect Game All-American Classic in San Diego - Clovis High School’s Jacob Gatewood - Gatewood’s bat speed is impressive — as is the power that he generates with said bat speed — but I saw a tendency for the swing to get “wild”, and it would have been nice to see him hit something with authority the other way. I also had some defensive questions; as he showed soft hands, but the ball has a tendency to tail on him and there’s some footwork issues as well. http://mlbdraftinsider.com/2013/08/thoughts-on-perfect-game-all-american-classic/?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter

8-21-13 – Area Code Games - 2. Jacob Gatewood, ss/3b/of, Clovis (Calif.) High/SGV Arsenal/San Diego Show - The athletic 6-foot-4, 190-pound Gatewood gained national recognition by winning the Junior Select Home Run Derby with 14 home runs at Citi Field during the MLB All-Star Game in July. In Long Beach, Gatewood showed some of the best power in class during batting practice, making Blair Field look small. He was geared up to hit the fastball in game action and his timing was a little off, causing him to hit into a few double plays. The Southern California commit gave scouts an extended look in the field and showed fluid actions and an above-average arm. http://www.baseballamerica.com/draft/area-code-games-top-10-prospects/

9-1-13 - Jim Callis – 6. Jacob Gatewood, ss, Clovis (Calif.) HS - Put on a show during Home Run Derby at Citi Field, may wind up at third base down the road.

8-15-13 - Under Armour All-Star Game – Jacob Gatewood, SS:  Gatewood is one of the top hitters in this draft and a top 5 pick candidate.  He has great size at 6'5", 190 with tremendous bat speed and the ability to hit for average and big-time power.  His claim to fame right now is winning the HR derby for the high school players at the All-Star Game this past season.  He's not extremely quick and is not expected to stay at SS but his bat will play at 3B or a corner OF spot. http://www.chicagonow.com/cubs-den/2013/08/2014-mlb-draft-ua-game-roster-and-preview-plus-more-tickets-and-meet-up-information/

9-4-13 – Mack’s Mock Draft v1.0 – 15 –  SS Jacob Gatewood – Clovis (CA) HS – This is a big guy (6-5) for a shortstop and also generates Tulo comparisons.  He generated a ton of power through excellent bat speed, plus has excellent speed, soft hands, and plays a great defensive game. This is definitely the year of some great shortstops

9-11-13 - Sully’s 2014 Top 100 MLB HS Draft Prospects - 9.Jacob Gatewood – SS, Clovis (CA) HS http://www.ninebaseball.org/Wordpress/sullys-2014-top-100-mlb-hs-draft-prospects/

9-30-13 – TTF Mock 2.0 - 3. Chicago White Sox — Jacob Gatewood, SS, Clovis HS (CA) With maybe the worst farm system in baseball, the White Sox have a chance to add a franchise player here and should go after the kid with perhaps the highest ceiling among the prep bats. Gatewood is a 6’-5”, 190 pound right-hander with some serious raw power, as well as excellent bat speed. He won the Junior Home Run Derby at Citi Field, slugging 13 home runs — three of them reaching the third deck. I also got to see him launch several bombs out of Wrigley Field as he won the home run derby at the 2013 Under Armour All American Game. He most likely will have to move off shortstop but his canon arm and instincts should play well at the hot corner or a corner outfield spot where his bat will more than justify the position. High character kid who is committed to USC.  http://throughthefencebaseball.com/2014-mlb-mock-draft-2-0-draft-order-set/38280#5E3F5j1jWOgE69bJ.99

10-9-13 – Early Pick for Cubs - Jacob Gatewood, SS, Clovis HS (CA) - If the Cubs decide to take the player who oozes potential but is still raw in some areas in the 2014 MLB draft, Gatewood could be the guy. At 6’-5”, he most likely will outgrow shortstop but his strong arm and athleticism could be a good fit for third base where his power potential would justify the hot corner. Another kid I got to see at Wrigley, he put on a show, winning the home run derby as he launched several bombs out of the park with ease. He also won the first annual high school home run derby at Citi Field during the All-Star break, hitting 14 home runs, several into the third deck. He isn’t a speed guy as he has been timed at 7.11 in the 60, but his combination of size and power separate him from others in his class. http://throughthefencebaseball.com/2014-mlb-draft-early-targets-chicago-cubs-fourth-overall-pick/38723

10-15-13 – Baseball America - 5. Jacob Gatewood, ss/3b, Clovis (Calif.) HS: Long, lean and toolsy athlete with a plus arm and arguably the best power potential in the class. http://www.baseballamerica.com/college/2014-draft-top-50-october-2013-carlos-rodon/

10-29-13 – Jim Callis – Top 10 World Wood Bat Association World Championship (WWBA) Jupiter, Fla - 2. Jacob Gatewood, SS, Toronto Blue Jays Scout Team (Clovis, Calif., HS/Southern California) -  6-foot-5, 190-pound athlete can put on a show in batting practice, needs more consistent game production. http://ht.ly/qi5No

11-14-13 - Michael Schwartze - The two top names behind Jackson are Clovis (Calif.) High School shortstop Jacob Gatewood and T.C. Robertson (Ashville, N.C.) High School outfielder Braxton Davidson. Gatewood has big upside with huge raw power, but showed contact issues over the summer, as his swing was often stuck in batting-practice mode during games leading to a lot of swings and misses. “Gatewood may have the highest ceiling because there’s a chance he plays up the middle,” an assistant scouting director said after the Area Code Games in Long Beach. “There’s a lot to like and a lot to dream on with him. Am I concerned about his swing? A little bit. He’s got time to figure it out.” http://www.studentsports.com/blog/2013/11/13/baseball-jupiter-wraps-up-2013-showcase-circuit/

11-21-13 -  Nathan Rode ‏@NathanRode  -  No. 3 Jacob Gatewood, SS, Clovis HS, CA. Southern Cal recruit. Big raw power, athletic. May move off SS, but can handle 3B or RF.

11-21-13 – BA Top 100 High School Players - 3 Jacob Gatewood SS/3B R/R 6-4 189 Clovis (Calif.) HS Southern California http://www.baseballamerica.com/college/2014-high-school-top-100-with-commitments/

11-27-13 – Big League Futures Top 25 Poll –   9 Jacob Gatewood    SS Clovis (CA)  http://bigleaguefutures.net/1/2013/11/26/mlb-draft-top-25-prospects-poll/

12-4-13 - MLB Pipeline ‏@MLBPipeline  -  Likely too big for SS. Bigger issue: will he hit enough to tap into huge power? @spencerbingol: Jacob Gatewood going to stick at SS?

B/R – 11-21-13 - 13. San Diego Padres: Jacob Gatewood, SS, Clovis HS (Calif.) - Jacob Gatewood has an athletic and projectable frame at 6’3”, 175 pounds that will allow him to add considerable strength as he matures physically. He’s a right-handed hitter with lightning-quick wrists and explosive bat speed that yield effortless plus raw power—especially to the pull side. Currently a shortstop, Gatewood is expected to outgrow the position and eventually slide over to third base. http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1860341-2014-mlb-mock-draft-early-first-round-projections-for-all-30-teams/page/10

12-10-13 – TTF – Top 50 HS Players - 2. Jacob Gatewood, SS, Clovis HS (CA) - At 6’-5”, the right-hander oozes potential due to his massive power potential. He is still raw in some areas, but he crushes baseballs with such little effort, it isn’t even fair. I saw him line a double off the wall at Wrigley that didn’t seem to go 10 feet off the ground. He likely won’t stick at short but has a canon for an arm, as well as the athletic abilities, which could allow him to stick at third base. Aside from winning the home run derby at the Under Armour AA Game at Wrigley, he won the Junior Home Run Derby at Citi Field, slugging 13 home runs — three of them reaching the third deck. Committed to USC. http://throughthefencebaseball.com/2014-mlb-draft-top-50/40532#zz88YJZTOG8iEa1Z.99

12-9-13 – Pine Tar Press  -   25- SS Jacob Gatewood Clovis HS (USC Commit) 9/25/95- Solidly built kid who stands at 6’5 but still has the frame of a SS. Right now, he has easy power and scouts dream on what that power becomes as he fills out.  He has a plus arm and is athletic so a move to 3B or RF has to be considered. (Rays @ 23) http://pinetarpress.com/early-look-2014-mlb-draft/

3.       Nicholas Gordan

6-9-13  -  8.Nick Gordon, SS (Florida HS): Right there with Jackson for all-around value, though he could be the better defender of the two. http://www.minorleaguerundown.com/2013/06/09/2014-mlb-draft-top-30-prospects/

6-11-13 - 7. Nick Gordon, RHP/SS, Olympia HS, Fla.: The son of Tom and brother of Dee, Gordon is a legitimate two-way guy who can play shortstop and hit from the left side. He's athletic on the mound, too, with a low-90s fastball and a big curve. http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20130611&content_id=50293726&vkey=news_mlb&c_id=mlb&tcid=tw_article_50293726

6-12-13  -  Committed to Florida State, Gordon had a big year for Olympia, batting .505 with 50 base hits, 15 doubles and 23 runs scored. He also pitched and posted a 5-1 record. He's the son of fomer major leaguer Tom "Flash" Gordon and the brother of Dee Gordon, who has seen time with the Los Angeles Dodgers http://www.maxpreps.com/news/article.aspx?articleid=7c0ad513-b5e1-4ac1-b57e-8dedcc72c783&page=2

6-13-13  - 7. Kansas City Royals — Nicholas Gordon, SS/RHP, Olympia HS (FL) - The son of  Tom “Flash” Gordon, Nick also can sling it on the mound (92 mph) but may have a brighter future at shortstop, where his strong arm, range and instincts will make him one of the better defensive shortstops in the 2014 MLB draft. Offensively, he hits from the left side and projects to a top-of-the-order hitter with speed and a very good approach at the plate. Over 30 games as a junior, he hit .505 with 15 doubles, six triples, and stole 12 bases. Committed to Florida State. http://beforeitsnews.com/sports/2013/06/2014-mlb-mock-draft-1-0-no-time-like-the-present-2513748.html?currentSplittedPage=2

5. Nicholas Gordon, SS/RHP, Olympia High in Orlando - Gordon (6-foot-2, 175) "may be the premier two-way talent in the 2014 draft," Perkin said, noting that he throws a low-90s fastball but is also a slick-fielding shortstop with speed and quickness. "Gordon's bat will determine his future in pro ball," Perkin said. "If he hits, Gordon stays at shortstop. If not, he moves to the hill." Choice A would make him like his older brother (Dodgers shortstop Dee Gordon), and Choice B would make him like his father (former big league reliever Tom Gordon). http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/mlb/news/20130610/draft-prospects-carlos-rodon/#ixzz2WWk0FqzU

7-2-13 - 2014 Top 100 High School Prospects - 9. Nick Gordon- SS/RHP, Olympia (FL) HS - 6.68 runner, 94 MPH across the diamond. Up to 92 on the mound. Scout in North Carolina told me he was #1 on his HS list http://www.ninebaseball.org/Wordpress/jeff-sullivans-top-100-2014-prospects/

7-25-13 – Top 30 High School Prospects For 2014 Draft - 13. Nick Gordon, SS/RHP, Olympia HS (FL) - 6'1/170, L/R, Draft Day Age: 18.62, Florida State commit, Full Report & Video - Quick Take: Gordon is probably the second most famous player in this class behind Toussaint as he's at most national events and has elite bloodlines from father Tom (former MLB closer) and brother Dee (Dodgers shortstop). Gordon has been up to 94 mph with an above average curve on the mound but is a better prospect as a lefty-hitting shortstop with good pop, feel to hit and defensive skills. http://sbb.scout.com/2/1310090.html

8-2-13 – Matt Garrioch ‏- That is why I rarely read or watch news...now back to baseball. Nick Gordon is already in the cages at East Coast Pro.........    Dan Kirby ‏@DanMKirby  - See him as a SS or SP? ….  Matt Garrioch ‏@mattgarrioch  - @DanMKirby SS, no question.

2013 East Coast Pro Showcase Top 50 Prospects    - 10. Nick Gordon – SS/RHP, Olympia (FL) HS - Top of the class defensive SS who can swing it too. Sat 90-91 and touched 92 on the mound http://www.ninebaseball.org/Wordpress/sullys-top-50-ecp-prospects/

8-14-13 – Through The Fence – Top 50 Prospects – 18. Nick Gordon, SS/RHP, Olympia HS (FL) - The son of  Tom “Flash” Gordon, Nick also can sling it on the mound (92 mph) but may have a brighter future at shortstop, where his strong arm, range and instincts will make him one of the better defensive shortstops in the 2014 MLB draft. Offensively, he hits from the left side and projects to a top-of-the-order hitter with speed and a very good approach at the plate. Over 30 games as a junior, he hit .505 with 15 doubles, six triples and 12 stolen bases. Committed to Florida State. http://throughthefencebaseball.com/2014-mlb-draft-top-50-prospects/36463#mwWwsFxSUZy7YC5V.99

8-13-13 - The Perfect Game All-American Classic in San Diego - *Nick Gordon (Olympia High School; Fla.) certainly can play shortstop, and obviously has the arm strength to stick at shortstop, but I’m not in love with the swing. He has a tendency to glide, and I’m not sure he’s going to be more than a gap hitter at the next level. With a 94 mile per hour fastball and a potentially plus curveball, I think I prefer Gordon on the mound at this point. http://mlbdraftinsider.com/2013/08/thoughts-on-perfect-game-all-american-classic/?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter

8-16-13 - 11th All-American Classic - Nick Gordon | SS/RHP | Olympia HS (Orlando, FL) - Height/Weight: 6-foot-2/170 pounds - B/T: L/R - Draft Day Age: 18 years, 7 months - Commitment: Florida State - One of the highest-profile players in the 2014 draft class, Gordon routinely impresses on and off the field, with the San Diego showcase being no exception. With standout tools, an excellent feel for the game, and major league bloodlines through both his father Tom and brother Dee, Nick received plenty of scout attention as an underclassman, and continues to ride high on follow lists as he enters his draft-eligible senior year. Scouting Notes: Top overall talent for me in the class; everything he does looks easy; natural glovework at shortstop with some swagger; soft hands; excellent backhand pickup; smooth; arm is very strong; no doubt at the position; body has more projection than his brother’s, with more strength potential; plus run; lunges at the ball a bit at the plate, but hand-eye is exceptional and can put barrel on the ball; good bat speed; don’t see a lot of power coming but he can sting the ball; timing can get disrupted by off-speed stuff; could develop into plus-hit-tool shortstop at highest level; bloodlines and makeup are there; could be a top 5 pick in 2014. –Jason Parks  Summer Stock: Gordon has had some ups and downs the past couple months on the showcase circuit, but he has shown so well in past viewings that his stock is unlikely to affected by a few hiccups here and there. At his best, Gordon boasts a dynamic defensive skill set, with impact potential in the hit tool. It has been a long eight months for the two-way standout dating back to the January Perfect Game World Showcase in Fort Myers, Florida, and evaluators will be champing at the bit to see a rested Gordon in a couple of months in Jupiter, and then again next spring. –Nick J. Faleris  http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=21537

9-1-13 – Petco Game - Nick Gordon (SS/RHP) (L/R) 6’2″ 170; Grad: 2014 Orlando, FL This was my first look at the SS so thought I would include him on my list. Tall, lean look with good projection to body. Two way athlete and EZ  to dream considering the bloodline: father is Flash Gordon and brother is Dee Gordon (LAD). Fast twitch swing geared for contact/LD at the moment; lives in middle part of diamond. As body matures and strengthens, can project as LD/gaps hitter with BA power. Instinctive base runner and SB threat. Alert defender w/quick first step and smooth, fluid actions. Plenty of arm to stay at SS. Premium  defender and future GG candidate. Pending how the bat progresses this spring, Nick has a chance to go early in the first round 2014. http://bigleaguefutures.net/1/2013/09/01/aflac-game-wrap-up-better-late-than-never/

8-15-13 - Under Armour All-Star Game – Nicholas Gordon: SS/RHP:  The son of former pitcher Tom Gordon, Nick also has a very good arm and can bring it at up to 92 mph but he's also a SS, where he may stand out more as a speedy top of the order hitter with great range, arm, and instincts in the field. http://www.chicagonow.com/cubs-den/2013/08/2014-mlb-draft-ua-game-roster-and-preview-plus-more-tickets-and-meet-up-information/

9-4-13 – Mack’s Mock Draft v1.0 – 6 – Giants – SS Nick Gordon – Olympia (FL) HS – I’ve got Gordon as the first high school shortstop to be drafted. The lefty projects as a leadoff hitter and plays a very good defensive game. Did not have a great summer, but I still have him as one of the top 10 players in the draft

9-11-13 - Sully’s 2014 Top 100 MLB HS Draft Prospects – 15.Nicholas Gordon – SS/RHP, Olympia (FL) HS

9-30-13 – TTF Mock 2.0 - 12. Milwaukee Brewers — Nick Gordon, SS/RHP, Olympia HS (FL)  The son of  Tom “Flash” Gordon, Nick also can sling it on the mound (92 mph) but may have a brighter future at shortstop, where his strong arm, range and instincts will make him one of the better defensive shortstops in the 2014 MLB draft. Offensively, he hits from the left side and projects to a top-of-the-order hitter with speed and a very good approach at the plate. Over 30 games as a junior, he hit .505 with 15 doubles, six triples and 12 stolen bases. 10-15-13 – Baseball America - 11. Nick Gordon, ss/rhp, Olympia HS, Orlando, Fla.: The son of former big leaguer Tom and brother of Dodgers infielder Dee has a chance to stick at short with a plus arm, good actions and a solid lefthanded swing. http://www.baseballamerica.com/college/2014-draft-top-50-october-2013-carlos-rodon/

10-29-13 – Jim Callis – Top 10 World Wood Bat Association World Championship (WWBA) Jupiter, Fla - 4. Nick Gordon, SS/RHP, Cardinals Scout Team/FTB Chandler (Olympia High, Orlando, Fla./Florida State)  Son of former All-Star Tom offers defensive ability, above-average speed and a low-90s fastball. http://ht.ly/qi5No

11-6-13 – Todd Gold – WWBA World Championship – Nick Gordon (2014 SS, Cardinals Scout Team/FTB Chandler) - In a class that has plenty of position prospects to dream on long term, Gordon is the safest bet to play everyday at an up-the-middle position in the Major Leagues. While his ceiling is tied to his ability to add strength (while maintaining his athleticism) to drive the ball, his floor is very high given his high level defensive ability at shortstop. Safe bets to play shortstop at the Major League level tend to come off the board early in the draft, and Gordon continued to show himself to be just that in Jupiter. Being paired with another highly talented middle infielder in the class, Milton Ramos, made the Cardinals Scout Team a fun team to watch. http://www.perfectgame.org/Articles/View.aspx?article=9157

11-11-13 – PG HS Rankings – 2  -   Nicholas Gordon SS RHP 6-2 170 L R Olympia Windermere FL  Florida State FTB Chandler Team  -  Good athlete, really projects both ways, outstanding defensive SS stood out at WWBA, BCS and PG Nat., great bloodlines, up to 94 @ PG World, Very good at PG All American Game  http://www.perfectgame.org/Rankings/Players/Default.aspx?gyear=2014&num=500

B/R – 11-21-13 - 18. New York Yankees: Nick Gordon, SS/RHP, Olympia HS (Fla.) - The son of former MLB closer Tom Gordon and brother to Dodgers shortstop Dee, Nick Gordon is one of the more intriguing prospects in this year’s draft class due to his high upside on both sides of the ball. At 6’1”, 170 pounds, Gordon is an outstanding athlete with the speed and defensive chops to likely remain at shortstop long term. At the plate, the left-handed hitter has good bat speed and barrel control but lacks projectable over-the-fence pop. On the mound, the right-handed pitcher can pop 92-94 mph with his fastball and spin an above-average curve. http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1860341-2014-mlb-mock-draft-early-first-round-projections-for-all-30-teams/page/10

12-10-13 – TTF – Top 50 HS Players - 7. Nick Gordon, SS/RHP, Olympia HS (FL) - A two-way talent with great bloodlines (Tom “Flash“ Gordon is his dad and Dee Gordon is his brother), the 6’-2” right-hander may have a brighter future at short where his strong arm, instincts and athleticism could allow him to stick at a premium position. Offensively, he hits from the left side and projects to a top-of-the-order hitter with speed and a very good approach at the plate. Over 30 games as a junior, he hit .505 with 15 doubles, six triples and 12 stolen bases. Committed to Florida State. http://throughthefencebaseball.com/2014-mlb-draft-top-50/40532#zz88YJZTOG8iEa1Z.99

12-9-13 – Pine Tar Press  -  18- SS/RHP Nick Gordon Olympia HS (Florida State Commit) 10/24/95- He is another talented 2-way guy. He has already grown 3-5 inches past his dad, the former big leaguer Tom. I think he sticks at SS even though the arm is pretty effortless sitting in the low 90’s with a solid curve (although not the elite curve his dad possessed) Offensively he can fly like his brother Dee and as a LH hitter that is a big advantage for his overall game. Obviously, he has plenty of arm to be a potentially super SS prospect. I have seen him twice and I actually like him as a pitcher better but I could see why he projects as a top 20 pick with the upside he has at SS and the power he already has shown. 4.       Greg Deichmann

7-2-13 - 2014 Top 100 High School Prospects  - 41. Greg Deichmann- SS, Brother Martin (LA) HS http://www.ninebaseball.org/Wordpress/jeff-sullivans-top-100-2014-prospects/

7-24-13  -  Gregory Deichmann, ss, Brothers Martin, Metairie, La./Marucci Elite - Deichmann has a lean and athletic 6-foot-2, 180-pound build. The lefthanded hitting LSU commit has impressive bat speed and is one of the top power bats in the class. He has raw power to all fields and can put on a show in batting practice, especially to his pull side. With two home runs during TOS, Deichmann matched the total all of 144 players from last year’s event. Deichmann is a fluid, rangy athlete with good lateral actions and defensive prowess. He has turned in a tick above-average 60-yard-dash times this summer and has shown arm strength. http://www.baseballamerica.com/draft/tyler-koleks-heavy-fastball-among-tournament-of-stars-standouts/

7-25-13 – Top 30 High School Prospects For 2014 Draft - 26. Greg Deichmann, SS, Brother Martin HS (LA) - 6'2/180, L/R, Draft Day Age: 19.02, LSU commit, Full Report - Quick Take: Deichmann has shown impressive and middling performances already this summer. He puts on a nice BP display with lefty power that projects for average to go with above average speed and a glove that likely settles at third base long-term. He's hit a couple homers in heavily-scouted games already this summer but also has struck out a lot and is one of the older players in the class. http://sbb.scout.com/2/1310090.html

8-14-13 – Through The Fence – Top 50 Prospects – 41. Greg Deichmann, SS, Brothers Martin HS (LA) - Left-handed hitting power shortstops are a nice commodity to have, and the 6’-2”, 190-pound Deichmann has a chance to stick at short due to his strong arm, speed and instincts in the field. He has excellent bat speed and can put on displays in the cage during batting practice. Even if he ends up at third, the power and arm will play well. Committed to USC. http://throughthefencebaseball.com/2014-mlb-draft-top-50-prospects/36463#mwWwsFxSUZy7YC5V.99

8-15-13 - Under Armour All-Star Game – Greg Dieschman, SS: Another power bat from the SS position, Dieschman does his thing fromt the left side.  He has good power, which he generates with very good bat speed.  He's not as prodiguous a power hitter as Gatewood, but he is faster, more athletic, and has a better shot of sticking at SS. http://www.chicagonow.com/cubs-den/2013/08/2014-mlb-draft-ua-game-roster-and-preview-plus-more-tickets-and-meet-up-information/

9-30-13 – TTF Mock 2.0 - 32. Colorado Rockies — Gregory Deichmann, SS, Brothers Martin HS (LA)  Left-handed hitting power shortstops are a nice commodity to have, and the 6’-2”, 190-pound Deichmann has a chance to stick at short due to his strong arm, speed and instincts in the field. 10-28-13 – Jim Callis - Marcucci Elite had a lineup laden with prospects, headlined by shortstop Gregory Deichmann (Brother Martin High, New Orleans). A 6-foot-2, 185-pounder, he had the lone hit against Burkholder, pulling a double inside the first-base bag in the fifth. Deichmann has a quick left-handed bat and solid speed, and he may have the arm and range to stay at shortstop. The Louisiana State recruit made a nice play on a grounder up the middle in the top of the third. http://ht.ly/qeYJz

11-21-13 – BA Top 100 High School Players - 89 Greg Deichmann 2B/SS L/R 6-1 187 Brothers Martin, Metairie, La. Louisiana State http://www.baseballamerica.com/college/2014-high-school-top-100-with-commitments/

12-10-13 – TTF – Top 50 HS Players - 32. Committed to USC. http://throughthefencebaseball.com/2014-mlb-draft-top-50/40532#zz88YJZTOG8iEa1Z.99

5.       Matt Chapman

6-9-13 -  24. Matt Chapman, SS (Cal State Fullerton): By all indications, he has the tools to be a strong defender at short. Add in the fact that he already has a strong approach and solid pop, and he has a lot of all-around value. http://www.minorleaguerundown.com/2013/06/09/2014-mlb-draft-top-30-prospects/

6-16-13 -  Player:  Matt Chapman - Position:  SS/3B - School:  Cal State Fullerton - Date of Birth:  4/28/1993 - Height/Weight:  6’1/195 - Bats/Throws:  R/R - 2014 Class:  College Junior - Previously Drafted: - Scouting Report: Solid build  Square stance  Good approach at the plate  Above average bat speed  Lift in swing  Above average power  Strong defense  Comes in on the ball well  Shows a strong arm in the field

7-6-13 - Alex Bregman ‏@ABREG_1  - My roomie @MattyChapp (Matt Chapman) pitched for the first time last night in his life... Sat 97-99 with a 90 mph slider

7-17-13 –  Matt Chapman, 3B, Cal-State Fullerton - Chapman is not your protoypical 3B at 6'1", 195 lbs but he has a compact athletic build and an all fields line-drive approach at the plate.  There wasn't a lot of loft to his swing and that, combined with his modest size, leads me to think he isn't going to hit for a lot of power.  He was very good at 3B, showing good lateral movement to both sides, including a tremendous diving play to his left.  I wonder if perhaps he can change positions.  SS may be a stretch but he looked quick and athletic enough to maybe try 2B, where his bat would profile better. http://www.chicagonow.com/cubs-den/2013/07/looking-ahead-to-the-2014-and-2015-mlb-draft-notes-from-the-collegiate-national-team-games/

8-14-13 – Through The Fence – Top 50 Prospects – 45. Matt Chapman, 3B, Cal State Fullerton - The 6’-2”, 200-pound right-hander has a plus arm and enough range to stick at the hot corner. Whether or not the power will show up to remain there is up for debate. He does show an advanced approach at the plate, having drawn 34 walks to 29 strikeouts over 55 games as a sophomore. I got to see him play with The Collegiate National Team and really liked his line-drive swing. If the power comes this year, he could move up draft boards. http://throughthefencebaseball.com/2014-mlb-draft-top-50-prospects/36463#mwWwsFxSUZy7YC5V.99

9-3-13 - Kendall Rogers ‏@KendallRogersPG  - INJURY NEWS: CalStateFullerton 3B, top MLBDraft prospect Matt Chapman will have surgery to repair a torn ligament on ring finger.  HC Rick Vanderhook said he played through it this summer and will miss the start of fall workouts. Will be back though.

10-14-13 – Top ’14 College Hitters - 8. Matt Chapman / 3B / Cal-State Fullerton — Chapman is similar to his teammate Davis in that they both profile as corner-infielders with pitching as a fallback option, but Chapman is much more likely to stick at third base but doesn’t have near the offensive upside. http://mlbdraftinsider.com/2013/10/top-14-for-14-college-hitters/

10-15-13 – Baseball America - 25. Matt Chapman, 3b/rhp, Cal State Fullerton: His easy premium arm could push him to the mound if his bat doesn’t fit third-base profile. http://www.baseballamerica.com/college/2014-draft-top-50-october-2013-carlos-rodon/

11-22-13 - We continue the countdown today with number 65, Cal State Fullerton infielder Matt Chapman. In his sophomore season with the Titans, Chapman started in 53 games at third base. During the 2013 season the infielder batted .285 with 53 hits, 41 runs scored and 37 RBI. His success on the diamond got Chapman named to the Fullerton All-Regional Team as well as the Big West Conference Second Team. The 6’2” third baseman was a permanent fixture in the three spot for the Titans due to his raw power and confidence at the plate. The Victorville, CA native attended El Toro High School where he was a three-year letterwinner for the Chargers. The two-time South Coast League honoree hit .422 with 39 hits as a senior and was named MVP as well as earned All-CIF First Team honors. http://ht.ly/2BGRtA

12-9-13 – Pine Tar Press  -  48-3B/RHP Matt Chapman Fullerton 4/28/93- Fullerton loves them some 2-way players. Chapman is the second Fullerton player in as many drafts who have an unclear path to the majors. Much like last year with Michael Lorenzen (eventually drafted as a P) he will have to show where he fits this spring. He has not seen as much time on the mound but it is easy to see where the love is for him as a pitcher when you see him rifle a throw across the diamond. The hit tool is good and he shows solid plate awareness but the game power just hasn’t been consistent. Scouts will like the arm though and appreciate the fact that it has very little wear in terms of innings pitched. (Out of First round- Brewers selection) http://pinetarpress.com/early-look-2014-mlb-draft/

6.       Joey Pankake

6-9-13 -  29. Joey Pankake, SS (South Carolina): Quietly may settle in as the 2nd best college shortstop available. Has some interesting potential at the plate, even though he’s a bit raw as a hitter. http://www.minorleaguerundown.com/2013/06/09/2014-mlb-draft-top-30-prospects/

6-10-13 -  Joey Pankake, SS, Souh Carolina - Pankake has good bat speed with plenty of pop in his bat.  His shows a strong arm in the field.  With a strong arm and nice hands, Pankake has a shot to remain at short.  If not, his bat willl play at third. http://bigleaguefutures.net/1/2013/06/10/2014-mlb-draft-early-college-names-to-know/

6-13-13  -  24. Oakland Athletics — Joey Pankake, SS, South Carolina - He should get drafted in the first round on his name alone. With a real chance to stick at shortstop, the 6’-1”, 200 pound right-hander has also come a long way with the bat. He has an advanced approach at the plate, great bat speed and has shown good power this season. Over 60 games, he is hitting .314 with 11 home runs, 40 RBI and has drawn 28 walks to 28 strikeouts for a .390 OBP/.502 SLG. Shortstops who can get on base and hit for power are high on everyone’s wish list. And think of the jersey sales. http://beforeitsnews.com/sports/2013/06/2014-mlb-mock-draft-1-0-no-time-like-the-present-2513748.html?currentSplittedPage=2

6-28-13 - Joey Pankake, SS, University of South Carolina: The 6'2" 200 pound shortstop likely won't be a shortstop next year. Recruited out of Easley, South Carolina, as a shortstop/pitcher Pankake has played the last two season for the Gamecocks exclusively at shortstop. That looks to change next season as Pankake will tryout for next years club as a position player and pitcher. He will be in the middle of the everyday lineup, however, it doesn't look it will be at short. Instead it looks like Pankake could play in left field, at third base or first base or even all three while also possibly being the teams closer. The switch appears to be mutual between player and coach and for the benefit of the players draft status, which to me sounds like a head scratcher. http://www.crawfishboxes.com/2013/6/28/4450674/the-way-too-early-2014-tcb-astros-draft-board

8-14-13 – Through The Fence – Top 50 Prospects – 40. Joey Pankake, SS, South Carolina - Reports are Pankake is going to be playing all over the field this year. He will be the team’s closer, play some outfield, move around the infield, maybe coach and possibly take on Joey Chestnut for the Coney Island hotdog eating contest — all in hopes of raising his draft stock. Those last two were a stretch, but the rest is true. At 6’-1” and 200 pounds, he has an advanced approach at the plate, a canon arm and excellent bat speed. He showed developing power as a sophomore, hitting .311/.387/.496 over 62 games with 11 home runs and drew 29 walks to just 29 strikeouts. I think being able to stick at shortstop would increase his draft stock the most, but what do I know. http://throughthefencebaseball.com/2014-mlb-draft-top-50-prospects/36463#mwWwsFxSUZy7YC5V.99

10-15-13 – Baseball America - 48. Joey Pankake, ss/3b/rhp, South Carolina: Powerfully built infielder controls the strike zone and has plus raw power to fit the profile at third base. http://www.baseballamerica.com/college/2014-draft-top-50-october-2013-carlos-rodon/

10-18-13 – Matt Garroich – SS Joey Pankake, yep, like pancake, at South Carolina improved from a funny name and a decent defender as a freshman to an impact college bat as well. He won't be a superstar with the stick (well, Garciaparra) likely won't be a superstar with the stick but is a solid all around up the middle talent and should be a top pick this coming June. http://www.minorleagueball.com/2013/10/18/4851030/2014-mlb-draft-atlantic-region-college-discussion

11-19-13 - Joey Pankake (SS/3B/OF/RHP??) - College: University of South Carolina - First off, look at his last name. Does it get much better than that? Pankake is built like a rock at 6’1″, 200 pounds and has the power to move over to third base or even a corner outfield spot if shortstop doesn’t work out for him. However, many scouts believe he has the athleticism and arm strength to stay at short-stop long-term. We will see where he plays at South Carolina this spring. Even if they move him from shortstop, scouts may still plug him back into that role once drafted. In 2013 for the Gamecocks, he hit .311 with nine doubles, 11 home runs, and 42 RBI. He is a pure hitter with a plus arm in the field, as can be shown by the fact that he can bring it mid-90s from the mound. Pankake is definitely one to keep an eye on because though Baseball American lists him at 48th on their list right now, he is likely to move up as the NCAA season progresses. If available, he, too, would look really good in Cardinal red. A shortstop that can hit? Man, that would be nice to have in St. Louis. http://stlcupofjoe.com/2013/11/19/2014-mlb-draft-five-prospects-to-keep-an-eye-on-part-2/

7-25-13 – Top 30 High School Prospects For 2014 Draft - 6. Ti'quan Forbes, SS, Columbia HS (MS) - 6'4/175, R/R, Draft Day Age: 17.78, Ole Miss commit, Full Report & Video - Quick Take: A relative unknown a few months ago has captured scouts' imaginations as a super projectable athlete that's the youngest of the top prospects in the class. He's still slightly awkward at times, but has good pop already and collects hits in bunches in games along with a chance to stick at shortstop due to his plus speed, great actions and an above average arm.  http://sbb.scout.com/2/1310090.html

2013 East Coast Pro Showcase Top 50 Prospects    - 34. Ti’Quan Forbes – SS, Columbia (MS) HS - Has one of the highest ceilings in the entire 2014 class. If the bat can play, he is a top 10-15 player in the class. http://www.ninebaseball.org/Wordpress/sullys-top-50-ecp-prospects/

8-14-13 – Through The Fence – Top 50 Prospects – 16. Ti’Quan Forbes, SS, Columbia HS (MS) - At 6’-4” and 180 pounds, the right-hander oozes potential due to his defensive abilities, strong arm, plus speed (6.4/60) and developing raw power. He has shown a patient approach at the plate, driving the ball to all fields, and his size suggests more power will come. He hit .391/.447/.758 as a junior with only seven strikeouts over 103 plate appearances. If teams believe he can stick at shortstop, he could shoot up draft boards. http://throughthefencebaseball.com/2014-mlb-draft-top-50-prospects/36463#mwWwsFxSUZy7YC5V.99

8-13-13 - The Perfect Game All-American Classic in San Diego - * It was my first look at Ti’Quan Forbes (Columbia High School, Miss.) — who the scouts that I talk to have raved about — and I get the appeal; he’s got good size (6’4″, 175) and he looked good during infield with above-average speed and a strong arm. My issue was with the swing, as he drops his hands fairly significantly and negates some of the bat speed he generates. http://mlbdraftinsider.com/2013/08/thoughts-on-perfect-game-all-american-classic/?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter

8-16-13 - 11th All-American Classic - Ti’Quan Forbes (SS/OF, Columbia HS (Columbia, MS): Wiry, athletic build with plenty of room to fill out; open stance; quick-twitch swing with bat speed; some pre-load movement; line-drive stroke in game action; potential for some power down the line; athleticism plays on defensive side; easy actions; highly projectable at 6-foot-4, 177 pounds; very high ceiling, a lot to dream on. —Chris Rodriguez http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=21537

B/R – 11-21-13 - 25. Los Angeles Dodgers: Ti’Quan Forbes, SS, Columbia HS (Miss.) - The youngest prospect in the draft class, Ti'Quan Forbes, who scouts knew little to nothing about heading into the summer, stands out for his impressive blend of athleticism and tools. At 6’4”, 175 pounds, the Ole Miss commit has plenty of room to fill out and should have plenty of strength at maturity. At the dish, Forbes, a right-handed hitter, showcases above-average bat speed with some pop to the gaps and utilizes his plus speed to leg out countless infield knocks. Meanwhile, at shortstop, he projects to remain at the position long term with exceptional range, smooth and fluid actions, and plenty of arm strength.  http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1860341-2014-mlb-mock-draft-early-first-round-projections-for-all-30-teams/page/10

12-9-13 – Pine Tar Press  -  29- SS Ti’Quan Forbes Columbia HS (Ole Miss Commit) 8/26/96- He is a tall, lanky SS in the mold of a young BJ Upton with the speed and coming power to support that debate. He moves well on the diamond and has a chance to be one of the fastest rising players in this June’s draft. (A’s @ 28) http://pinetarpress.com/early-look-2014-mlb-draft/

8.       Liam Sambino

6-9-13 -  19.Liam Sabino, SS (New Jersey HS): He’s repeatedly shown that he has the tools to stick at short. Sabino’s quick swing could lead to well above average offensive production once he reaches Vanderbilt, or the pros. http://www.minorleaguerundown.com/2013/06/09/2014-mlb-draft-top-30-prospects/

6-13-13  -  20. Tampa Bay Rays — Liam Sabino, SS, Blair Academy (PA) - A very good defensive shortstop — maybe the best in the draft — the 6’-1” right-hander has a strong arm (90 mph), soft hands and makes it look effortless in the field. His bat is behind the defense but his bat speed and approach project well. More power should come as he matures but he profiles as more of a top-of-the-order hitter. He also isn’t a base stealer, but with the premium put on up-the-middle talent, he has a strong chance to go in the first round of the 2014 MLB draft. http://beforeitsnews.com/sports/2013/06/2014-mlb-mock-draft-1-0-no-time-like-the-present-2513748.html?currentSplittedPage=2

10-25-13  - PG Showcase – Among Team Elite’s hitters, third baseman Montrell Marshall (Snellville, Ga.) showed well on Day One, hitting several balls with authority on a line, including a line drive triple just short of the center-field warning track. Marshall has a projectable 6-foot-5, 200-pound build and looks the part at third, where he moves well and has plenty of arm strength. http://www.baseballamerica.com/draft/toussaint-wows-evaluators-at-jupiter/

11.   Milton Ramos

8-24-13 - Most of the top high school hitters in the 2014 draft class are on hand for the Under Armour All-America Game, powered by Baseball Factory. Friday’s workout at the University of Illinois-Chicago’s Miller Field featured batting practice, infield and outfield and a home run derby, winnowing the field for Saturday’s derby prior to the game at Wrigley Field. Of the 2014 players, shortstop Milton Ramos (Hialeah Gardens, Fla.) put on the best show Friday. Ramos, who played at Florida Christian High in 2013 and will attend American Heritage this upcoming academic year, entered the summer with a reputation as a flashy, at times brilliant defender, and he didn’t disappoint in the workout. http://www.baseballamerica.com/draft/under-armour-all-star-game-notebook/

12-10-13 – TTF – Top 50 HS Players - 24. Milton Ramos, SS, American Heritage HS (FL) - A defensive whiz who should stick at shortstop, the 6’-1”, 160-pound right-hander showed great improvements at the plate during the tournament circuit. He has been clocked at 6.53 in the 60, showing above-average speed, as well. If he continues to improve offensively, he could be a first-round pick. http://throughthefencebaseball.com/2014-mlb-draft-top-50/40532#zz88YJZTOG8iEa1Z.99

12.   Casey Turgeon

13.   Josh Morgan

7-24-13  -  Josh Morgan, ss, Orange County Lutheran, Corona, Calif./GBG Marucci - Morgan has a compact, strong and athletic build with physicality in his lower half at 6-foot, 185-pounds. With fluid actions, good lateral quickness and soft hands, Morgan has defensive chops. He has a quick transfer and average arm. More quick than fast, Morgan has average straight-line speed. Using a tall, narrow and slightly open stance, the UCLA commit has a long, aggressive stride. He has a quick, compact line-drive stroke and natural feel for the barrel. A member of GBG Marucci, Morgan has gap power and runs the bases well. http://www.baseballamerica.com/draft/tyler-koleks-heavy-fastball-among-tournament-of-stars-standouts/

8-31-13 – Area Code Games - Josh Morgan (SS) 6’0″ 185 (R/R); 2014 Strong, athletic frame. Contact/LD hitter w/quick bat; BA game power. Lives in middle of diamond and see better days ahead of him with the bat. Not a re-do, but needs to iron out the swing (must minimize leg kick and get front foot down earlier as game speeds up). Avg./fringy plus runner w/plus instincts on base paths; SB threat. Polished defender w/active lower half. Sure, soft hands w/good mobility and body control to throw on run. Enough arm to stay at SS; 55arm. Bat is suspect. http://bigleaguefutures.net/1/2013/08/31/area-code-notes/

9-21-13 -The player who stood out for the Nighthawks was shortstop Josh Morgan. Morgan didn’t have a strong summer, but PG’s Todd Gold reported that Morgan had been playing very well recently. That was certainly the case Friday night, as Morgan looked lighter and much faster, both with the bat and with his straight line running speed. He had a few long battles at the plate with Vetrovec that could have gone either way.  http://www.perfectgame.org/Articles/View.aspx?article=9017

He also gained more speed in doing so. At the plate, he makes consistent, hard contact to all fields. One of those kids who just gets better every time out. 10-28-13 – Jim Callis – SS Isan Diaz (Springfield, Mass., Central High) showed smooth actions at shortstop, making several plays look easier than they were. The 6-foot, 185-pounder has shown some offensive promise but went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts and struggled against breaking balls. He has yet to commit to a college. http://ht.ly/qeYJz

12-10-13 – TTF – Top 50 HS Players - 49. Shane Benes, SS, Westminster Christian Academy (MO) - The 6′-3″, 200-pound right-hander showed off his tremendous raw power in Jupiter by registering 108 mph on his exit velocity. His size may move him off short but he shows soft hands, enough range and an arm to at least make it interesting. Very good bloodlines as his dad, Andy Benes, was the first-overall pick by the Padres in the 1988 MLB draft and spent 14 seasons in the majors. Committed to Missouri. http://throughthefencebaseball.com/2014-mlb-draft-top-50/40532#zz88YJZTOG8iEa1Z.99

34.   Matt Lloyd

9-21-13 - Foothill Dawgs Baseball shortstop Matt Lloyd was very impressive and the Alberta native certainly has to rank among the top 2014 Canadian prospects in the class. He’s a strong and lean 6-foot-2, 175-pound lefthanded hitter who was outstanding on defense, and single-handedly saved the Dawgs 3-3 tie with the Cal Stars a couple of times with his glove and arm. He charges the ball very well from shortstop but has the arm strength to make the long throw as well. Lloyd was also involved in a bizarre triple play that actually took a minute or two to figure out what went on. With the bases loaded and no outs in the fifth inning, the Dawgs brought their infield in. Lloyd made a diving stop of a hard line drive up the middle and the umpire responded with a somewhat quiet “out” call. The runner on third, thinking the ball had been trapped, raced home and Lloyd jumped to his feet and threw home for what he thought was a force-out. By then no one knew what was going on and had stopped, so the Dawgs just threw the ball around to every base, tagging players and bases until the umpires signaled three outs – 3 http://www.perfectgame.org/Articles/View.aspx?article=9017

35.     Tristan Hildebrandt

9-21-13 – SS Tristan Hildebrandt brings a well-rounded skill-set to the table and he put it on display on Friday. He has the ability to drive the ball to right-center field, and showed legitimate power potential in that direction in the first game on Friday. His footwork at shortstop is also a standout part of his game. He gets the ball out of his glove exceptionally well, and he made the game look easy during Friday’s action. One of the first things you notice about Hildebrandt is his confidence and at ease nature wherever he is on the field. He lets the ball track deep at the plate, doing a good job of trusting his hands. The shortstop picked up a double in game one for Hard 9, but also drove the ball later in the game as well. .  http://www.perfectgame.org/Articles/View.aspx?article=9017

36.   Chesny Young

11-20-13 - We continue the countdown today with number 67, Mercer infielder Chesny Young. In his sophomore campaign with the bears, Young started every game in Mercer’s 61 game schedule. Chesny led the nation among NCAA Division I players in hits with a total of 105. In addition, Young led the Bears in batting average (.401), on-base percentage (.458), and total bases (141). The Mercer infielder also finished 2nd in RBI’s (65), finishing out the Bears schedule with a 30 game hitting streak. His success on the diamond earned him the 2013 Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Year. The Atlanta, GA native attended Marist High School where he played 3 years of baseball for the War Eagles. He helped his team to back to back AAAA State Championships in 2010 and 2011. As a senior Young hit .424 with 41 RBI and was invited to the Georgia top-100 showcase. http://ht.ly/2BCKff
