Burgamy Slams Flying Squirrels 5-1

Brian Burgamy launched a grand slam and Matt Bowman fired six scoreless innings to lead the Binghamton Mets past the Richmond Flying Squirrels, 5-1, on Tuesday night at NYSEG Stadium. In his last six games, Burgamy, the reigning Eastern League Player of the Week, has collected 13 hits, including four home runs, and 13 RBI.

Burgamy kick-started the B-Mets with a one-out double in the bottom of the first against Ty Blach. He moved to third on a Matt Reynolds single. Kevin Plawecki put Binghamton on the board with a sac fly to center, notching his 41st RBI of the season.

That would be all the B-Mets would need for most of the night thanks to Matt Bowman. The righty retired the first eight batters he faced and allowed just three hits in six scoreless innings. Bowman’s biggest challenge came in the sixth when Richmond loaded the bases with two outs. Bowman escaped unscathed and capped his night by inducing Devin Harris to bounce back to the mound.

On the other side, Binghamton couldn’t get the big hit against Blach. The team stranded seven runners through the lefty’s five innings pitched.

However, the B-Mets came alive in the sixth, loading the bases against Andrew Carignan. With two outs, Burgamy greeted new reliever Josh Osich by hammering the lefty’s first pitch into the rail yard beyond the left-field wall. His team-leading eleventh home run of the season gave Binghamton a five-run lead.

After Chase Huchingson and Ryan Fraser tossed scoreless inning, Jack Leathersich was touched for a one run in the ninth.

Bowman (5-4) struck out four batters in six blank innings to earn his second straight win. Blach (4-4) gave up just one run in five innings and took the hard-luck loss.

POSTGAME NOTES: Binghamton has won seven of their last eight games…Brian Burgamy’s grand slam was the first by a B-Met since Richard Lucas went deep against the Trenton Thunder on July 26, 2013…Matt Bowman has gone at least five innings nine of his twelve starts this season
