LAST GAME: The Binghamton Mets used three big innings to take the series opener over the Trenton Thunder, 8-4, on Thursday night at NYSEG Stadium. The B-Mets scored three in the first, three in the fifth and two in the sixth. Dustin Lawley went 2-for-4 with a home run, two runs scored and four RBI. Dilson Herreraput up a 2-for-4 performance, scored twice and drove in another run. Steven Matz allowed two runs (one earned) in five innings to earn his third win. Randy Fontanez and Jack Leathersich pitched a scoreless final two frames. Leathersich struck out all three batters he faced in the ninth.
BINGHAMTON STARTER: RHP Tyler Pill takes the hill for the 16th time this season and his fifteenth start. The righty hasn’t pitched for Binghamton since July 3 after spending the last nine days with Las Vegas (AAA). The Covina, California native didn’t factor into the decision in his last outing. He went 6.1 innings, gave up four runs and struck out seven batters on July 3 at New Britain. The B-Mets won the game 6-4. Binghamton has won Pill’s last ten starts dating back to May 11. This comes after the team lost his first five. The Cal State-Fullerton product was drafted by the Mets in the fourth round in 2011.
TRENTON STARTER: RHP Zach Nuding makes his 12th appearance of the season and his tenth start. Nuding is coming off a win in his last start. He let up one run in 7.2 innings as Trenton beat Reading, 5-1. on Thursday July 10. The Forth Worth, Texas native has just 17 walks and 54 strikeouts in 63 innings this season. He has gone at least five innings in every outing, but one in 2014. The Weatherford College product was taken by the Yankees in the 30th round of the 2010 draft.
DUSTIN DOMINATES: Binghamton INF/OF Dustin Lawley hit a three-run home run in the first inning on Thursday to give him 13 since June 10. He has 31 RBI during that period. This comes after having four long balls through the first two months of the season. Lawley leads the team with 17 home runs on the year.
DON’T LOOK NOW: The B-Mets have won eight of their last nine games. In that time, the team has cut the deficit in the Eastern Division from eight games to 3.5 behind first-place Portland. Binghamton hasn’t been that close since May 20. They are at their high-water mark at 59-38.
JACK FLASH: Binghamton reliever Jack Leathersich struck out all three batters he faced in the ninth inning in Thursday’s win over Trenton. That gives the lefty 70 K’s in 39.2 frames this season. Binghamton leads the league in strikeouts in 2014 with 766.
HIP, HIP, HERRERA: Binghamton INF Dilson Herrera went 2-for-4 on Thursday to extend his hitting streak to five games. He has a base knock in 16 of the last 17 contests. The 20-year-old has tallied at least one hit in all but four of his outings since joining Binghamton on June 19.
NO PLACE LIKE HOME: With Thursday’s win, the B-Mets improved to 34-16 at NYSEG Stadium this season. The team has a winning record against every team it’s faced at home in 2014. That includes a 19-8 mark against fellow Eastern Division squads. Binghamton has won five of its last six in the Southern Tier.
BATTER UP: Binghamton leads the league in three offensive categories. They’re first in runs with 513, first in home runs with 91 and tied for the lead in slugging percentage at .428. The squad is also third in batting average at .277, five points back of Bowie for first place.
