Starlin Castro broke a 1-all tie in the top of the 9th
with a solo homer of Jenrry Mejia, the Cubs beat the Mets Sunday afternoon in
Flushing 2-1. The game was a pitching
duel between Jake Arrieta and Rafael Montero.
The Cubs broke through first taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the 4th
on an RBI single Luis Valbuena. Arrieta
was untouchable. He went 7 scoreless allowing just 2 hits walking 2 and
striking out 9. The Mets tied the game in the bottom of the 8th
against Pedro Strop. Curtis Granderson’s
RBI single brought home pinch runner Eric Young Jr. with the tying run. In the
top of the 9th off Mejia, Castro hit an opposite filed homer, his 13th
on the year to score the game winner. Hector Rondon pitched a 1-2-3 9th
to earn his 17th save. Mejia
takes the loss falling to 5-6, Strop gets the win he’s 2-4. The Mets were held to 4 hits for the 2nd
game in a row, Ruben Tejada getting the start at short led the way going 2 for
3. Montero had his best outing since returning from Las Vegas going 7 1/3
innings allowing 5 hits 1 run (earned) while walking 2 and striking out 6. The
Mets lead the series 2 games to 1. They now stand at 59-66 on the year and
30-31 at home. Monday afternoon is the final game of the series . Bartolo Colon
(11-10 3.85) goes for the win for the Mets, Kyle Hendricks (4-1 1.73) goes for Chicago
