LAST GAME: The Binghamton Mets pounded out 14 hits in a 9-6 win over the Richmond Flying Squirrels, on Tuesdaynight at The Diamond. Six Binghamton players had multi-hit nights. Brian Burgamy went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run and four RBI. Wilfredo Tovar put up a 3-for-4 performance with two doubles and two runs scored. Tyler Pilltossed seven innings and didn’t allow a run on five hits. He also tallied eight strikeouts. The team’s magic number to clinch a playoff spot is 15.
BINGHAMTON STARTER: RHP Greg Peavey makes his 14th start of the season and his second against Richmond. The 25-year-old is coming off his first loss since April 14. He gave up four runs on eight hits in six innings in a 7-2 Binghamton defeat to New Hampshire on Wednesday, July 30. All of the runs were scored in the first inning. Peavey tossed eight innings of one-run ball in his only other appearance against Flying Squirrels. The B-Mets won the game 6-1. Peavey has managed at least five strikeouts in each of his last five outings. That includes two games with seven K’s. The Vancouver, Washington native was taken by the Mets in the sixth round of the 2010 drafter out of Oregon State.
RICHMOND STARTER: RHP Chris Stratton takes the hill for the second time this season and his first against Binghamton. The 23-year-old made his debut on Wednesday, July 30 against Harrisburg. He allowed one run on seven hits in five innings, but didn’t factor into the decision. Richmond lost the game after giving up five runs in the ninth. Stratton made his first 19 appearances of the year with San Jose (High-A). He was 7-8 with a 5.07 ERA. The righty tallied 102 strikeouts and just 36 walks in 99.1 innings. He allowed two runs or less in eight of those outings. The Tupelo, Mississippi was taken by San Francisco in the first round (20th overall) of the 2012 draft out of Mississippi State.
FIRST THINGS FIRST: Last night’s performance by Tyler Pill continued a streak of three straight fantastic performances by Binghamton starting pitchers. The unit has allowed one earned run in the last 20 innings. The stretch includes 22 strikeouts and just three walks. They have not surrendered a home run in the last three games. Overall, B-Met starters have a 3.94 ERA on the season.
SO LONG, FAREWELL: Binghamton is in the middle of a stretch in which they play 13 of their next 16 games away from NYSEG Stadium. That includes visits to Richmond, Harrisburg and Reading for the first time. Overall, the team wraps up the regular season playing 17 of 28 on the road. They are just 29-26 away from the Southern Tier in 2014, compared to 39-21 at home.
WALK THIS WAY: Binghamton batters walked seven times in Tuesday’s game. It’s the fourth time in the last five games that the team has earned at least four base-on-balls in a contest. The team is second in the league in walks on the year with 401. Brian Burgamy is third in the league in that category with 56.
BULLPEN BLISTER: The B-Mets bullpen has been tagged for 13 runs in the last two games. That’s more than the unit has surrendered in the previous 12 games. All six runs on Tuesday were give up by relievers.
STICK WITH WHAT WORKS: Binghamton has dominated Richmond this season . Through four games, the B-Mets hit 43-for-135 (.319) and have outscored the Flying Squirrels 26-8 during the series. Binghamton pitchers have struck out 32 batters and walked just five. These teams matchup five more times this season, all of which are on the road.
