August 8th
New York played their second twinbill in four days splitting a
pair in Atlanta against the Braves. Jerry Koosman won his 9th going
all the way en route to a 4-1 victory in the opener. Hanging on to a one-run lead
the Mets exploded for three in the top of the 9th off a trio of
Brave relievers. Agee led off with a single and two batters later Cleon Jones
doubled him home.
After a walk and
ground out Donn Clendenon and J.C. Martin greeted reliever Claude Raymond with back
to back RBI singles. Koosman lost his shut out with two down in the 9th
when Atlanta catcher Bob Tillman blasted a solo shot out of the yard.
In the second game Gary Gentry was masterful shutting out the
powerful Brave line-up on 4 hits over 9 innings. Usually that’s enough for a W
but Atlanta’s Ron Reed was his equal blanking the Mets through regulation. Ron
Taylor struggled In relief of Gentry in the 9th, finally succumbing
via Felipe Alou’s walk-off single in the Atlanta 10th.
The 60-48 Mets now trailed by 8.5 picking up half a game on the Cubs who were
shut out by the Dodgers Bill Singer, 5-0.
