Fort Myers 9 - St. Lucie 8

The Fort Myers Miracle got a walkoff 9-8 win over the St. Lucie Mets on Thursday at JetBlue Ballpark.

Mets reliever Beck Wheeler walked the bases loaded in the ninth. After he struck out Niko Goodrum for the second out, he plunked Travis Harrison on the elbow to force home the winning run.

It was a wild contest in the season series finale between the clubs. Each team pounded out 14 hits. The Mets lost a three run lead while the Miracle blew a pair of two-run leads.

The game took three hours and 49 minutes, the longest nine-inning game for either team this season. That did not include a 29 minute rain delay before the fifth.

The Mets and Miracle each used five pitchers after they had to play a doubleheader on Wednesday and an atypical doubleheader on Tuesday.

Phil Evans started the top of the ninth with a base hit, but D.J. Johnson struck out Eudy Pina with Evans at third base to send the Miracle to the plate with a chance to win it.

With the Mets trailing 8-6 in the eighth, Gavin Cecchini blasted a two-run homer to tie the game 8-8.

The Mets also rallied from down 6-4 in the sixth when Albert Cordero hit a homer and L.J. Mazzilli plated a run on a fielders choice.

However, Ryan Fraser couldn’t keep it tied in the bottom of the sixth. He got the first two outs but gave up a hit Adam Brett Walker. Max Kepler followed with an RBI triple to break the tie and Tyler Grimes added a single to bring in Kepler and make it 8-6.

The Mets got to Miracle starter Steven Gruver early, scoring four runs in the first two innings.

The Miracle answered with a run in the first against Matt Koch and scored twice more in the second against Koch to cut the deficit to 4-3.

The Miracle then tagged Koch for three runs in the fourth to take their first lead. Dalton Hicks hit a two-run single and Walker hit a ground rule double to bring in a run and make it 6-4.

Koch gave up 10 hits and six runs in 3 2/3 innings. Gruver gave up 10 hits and five runs in five innings.

Five Mets had multi hit games. Pina and Evans had three hits apiece. Mazzilli, Jared King and Cam Maron each had two hits.

The only players without hits were Jeff McNeil and Gilbert Gomez. McNeil walked twice but his 12-game hitting streak was snapped. Gomez reached on a walk and an error.

The Miracle were led by Kepler who was 3 for 4 and scored three runs, including the game-winner.

The Mets continue their nine-day road trip on Friday when they begin a three-game series with the Bradenton Marauders at McKechnie Field. The Mets are 5.5 games behind the first place Marauders in the second half standings. - team press release
