Savannah, Ga.- Crooked numbers on the scoreboard and Robert Gsellman carried the Gnats to a doubleheader sweep of the Hickory Crawdads Saturday. The Gnats won game one 5-2 and game two 8-0.
In game two, Gsellman tossed a complete game shutout to improve to 9-5 and lower his ERA to 2.45. He allowed six hits and a walk while striking out five. It was the fourth complete game of the year for Gsellman.
The Gnats (25-16/69-38) put the game away early with a four-run second inning. Catcher Colton Plaiaprovided the key swing with a three-run double crushed up the right-center field gap.
Savannah, which drew seven walks in the game, added three runs in the fourth and one run in the fifth.
In game one, the Crawdads (24-18/65-46) scored first with a run in the second on a Ronald Guzmansingle into centerfield off starter Ricky Knapp.
However, the Gnats erased that early lead with a five-run fourth inning, capped by a two-run single by first baseman Matt Oberste. Knapp held the Crawdads to two runs, one earned, in his 5.1 innings to earn his fifth win of 2014.
