St. Lucie 6 - Ft. Myers 5

One crucial error by the Fort Myers Miracle opened the flood gates to allow the St. Lucie Mets to rally for a 6-5 win on Wednesday at Tradition Field.

Miracle first baseball Dalton Hicks was unable to squeeze a throw from Niko Goodrum at first base that would have ended the sixth inning. The Mets took advantage of the miscue by scoring five runs on four hits and a walk to overcome a 5-1 deficit and take a 6-5 lead.

After Hicks’ error, Gilbert Gomez doubled down the right field line to bring home two runs and make it 5-3.

Jeff McNeil then drew a walk. Maikis De La Cruz singled home Gomez to bring the Mets within a run. L.J. Mazzilli followed with a game-tying single. Jared King made it three straight hits when his bloop into right field dropped to bring home De La Cruz and put the Mets in front 6-5.

All the damage was done against starter Matt Tomshaw, who also allowed a two-out RBI single to Gomez in the fourth. That run was also earned.

In total, Tomshaw gave up six runs, although none were earned. The Mets tagged him for 10 hits in his six innings. Five of the hits came in the sixth.

Julian Hilario stranded the tying run on third base in the seventh when Stuart Turner popped out to right.

Beck Wheeler pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth to preserve the win. He struck out Hicks to end the game after falling behind in the count 3-0. Adam Brett Walker, the all-time single season home run leader for Fort Myers, was waiting in the on-deck circle.

It was Wheeler’s ninth save.

Seth Lugo pitched five innings of relief to earn the win. He gave up a two-run homer to Levi Michael that made it 5-0 Miracle in the fourth, but that was it.

Mets starter Jeremy Hefner, in his third rehab start in St. Lucie, only pitched the first inning. He gave up three runs, three hits and walked two. He tossed 28 pitches.

Hicks put the Miracle on the board with a two-run double in the first. Walker followed with an RBI single.

After Michael’s two-run home run made it 5-0 in the fourth, the Mets looked to be in trouble. Instead they rallied to beat the Miracle for the sixth time in seven games at Tradition Field.

Gavin Cecchini went 3 for 3 with a walk. Gomez, De La Cruz and Mazzilli had two-hit games.

De La Cruz extended his hitting streak to six games. In five of those games he has multiple hits. - team press release

I'd like to see Akeel Morris promoted to St Lucie to be its closer. With Leathersich promoted to AAA, move Beck Wheeler up to AA to open that slot for Akeel and see what Wheeler can do vs. higher competition.

Akeel is pitching like he could already handle AA or AAA. He has so outmatched the South Atlantic league opposition, it's not even funny.
