DOWN UNDER: Mets Minor League Results - 8-12-15

STAR OF THE DAY: Tim Stauffer, Travis Taijeron

HONORABLE MENTION: the 3 Kingsport elite hitters.

 SCORES:

Las Vegas (65-52) 7 - El Paso 0 in the 9th

Binghamton (63-52) 2  - Altoona 5

St Lucie (59-56)  0 - Ft Myers 1

Savannah (66-48) 12 - Rome 3

Brooklyn  (25-26) 6 - State College 7

Kingsport (26-23) 7 - Burlington 4

GCL Mets (25-20) 0 - Marlins. 4

Now Here's the Scoop:

Las Vegas went with Mr. Stauffer tonight. Brilliant outing in which Tim threw 1 hit ball thru 8.

Second inning jacks by Allen (13) and Taijeron staked Vegas to a 2nd inning 3-0 lead. Taijeron hit a 3 run bomb 18, 19) in the 8th for a 7-0 lead. Game still in progress.

Binghamton's Gsellman seeks to finish a fine season strong. He was OK tonight (5 innings, 4 runs, 1 earned), but the B Met offense was stifled, and the B Mets lost. Morris tossed a scoreless inning,

Tonight, though, TJ Rivera from the Bronx has started to hit like the Bambino, with his 3rd homer in two games.

St Lucie's Kevin McGowan came in looking to extend the team's recent momentum. He pitched 7 innings of 1 run, 4 hit ball, but left trailing 1-0, the final score. Nine Lucie hits could not produce a run. Eric Goeddel relieved and tossed a scoreless 8th, so there was some good news.

Savannah's Ricky Knapp has pitched well and came in intent on whoopin' them Romans. The Mets scored 5 in the first 4 innings off of Touki Toussaint, who has an SAL ERA over 6. A homer (6) by Tomas Nido and a whole lot of bases in balls helped break the game wide open. Rome outshot the Gnats, but the Gnats won by 9. Sweet.

Brooklyn hoped to take State College to school tonight. Ty Badamo left in the 6th with 3 runs in and the bags full.  Nicco Blank allowed all 3 to score. Blank did strike out 7 in 3.2 IP. Brooklyn rallied for 2 in the 9th to draw within one, but lost 7-6.

Kingsport started red hot Nabil Crismatt tonight. He did fine, 7 innings 2 earned runs, 5 Ks. The trio of offensive standouts - Mazelka, Carpio, and Kaczmarski - stood out again tonight. Each got on base 3 times.

GCL Mets: some days, you just don't get a sniff. Today was one for the G Mets. Unearned runs, only 3 hits...most times, you lose. Today they lost 4 zip.  The 2 Marlin pitcher's ERAs are 1.41 and 0.00. Happens.

By the way: The 2 DSL Mets teams outscored their opponents 21-4 today.

 GOAT: none

Vegas won 7-1 as Tim Stauffer gave up a homer in the 9th and finished with a 2 hitter, 104 pitches, 2-0, 2,53. The 33 year old 2003 first rounder has 590 career mmajor league innings and a 33-34 record, so maybe we'll see him in September?

He looks like he could help, based on a very small sample, but like Dillon Gee is not on the 40. By Sept, hopefully, Matz will return. And Verrett is being stretched out as well.

As is, when David returns we'll need to drop someone from the 40. Do we want to cut more?

On the 40 Man - don't forgot Leatherich moves to the 60 day DL and will open one spot

It looks like Monell will be the odd man out at catcher and be DFA'ed - no need for 4 catchers on the 40 man.

So that is two spots - and frankly if we need a third, I see Muno being pushed off the 40 man (Sorry Tom) he had his shots this year and didn't capitalize on them (maybe not his fault, but that's how it went.)

Wright is one spot, Goedell another - Blevins now isn't coming back, so we can make a 3rd spot for a starter

Frankly if we get any separation with the Nats, we need to bring Gee back to make a few Sept starts to protect the young arms.

So - after knocking TJ Rivera for having no power he hits another HR!

Good for him - I will gladly eat my words and watch him succeed.

Lew, the TJ Lack of Power critique has been legit. If you rate a player on 5 tools, if he can add some real pop, he will surge in the polls.
