Gators - Gators junior right-hander Alex Faedo was in
command. He was throwing inside darts with his fastball to South Carolina's
right-handed hitters. Faedo mixed in some effective change-ups to left-handed
batters, and his slider, one of the best in the country, was dancing on the
outside edge of the plate. In front of a
horde of professional scouts, Faedo turned in perhaps the finest performance of
his college career, tossing 8 2/3 shutout innings in a 1-0 victory over the
Gamecocks. The game featured two of the best starters in the Southeastern
Conference in Faedo and South Carolina ace Clarke Schmidt.
12thman
- Brigham Hill was left with no-decision despite the solid performance on the
mound. He worked 7.0 blank frames, scattering five hits and one walk while
striking out six. Kilkenny (3-1) earned the win, allowing one run on two hits and
one walk while striking out three in 2.0 innings.
Goheels
- Pitt (16-19, 7-12 ACC) got off to a dream start as Jacob Wright led off the
home half of the first with a towering home run to right. But Bukauskas was his
dominant self from there, allowing just four singles and pushing his season
strikeout total to 89. The junior right-hander retired nine straight at one
point and didn't allow a Panther to advance past second until Pitt scored in
the seventh.
Thestate
- Crowe’s performance came at the same stadium where he injured his elbow two
years ago. The injury and Tommy John surgery cost him the remainder of the 2015
season and all of 2016. “Wil was awesome. It was important for him too,”
Holbrook said. “He got hurt here a couple of years ago and that was a very
difficult weekend for our team and our program and for Wil. It was good to see
him pitch one of his best games at the site where he got injured. It was a
meaningful game and it will mean something for him for a long time.”
Auburn
- The 15 runs scored by the Tigers Friday are the most for the program in a SEC
game since a 15-8 win at Kentucky on April 9, 2011. Keegan Thompson (5-1)
struck out seven in six innings and allowed only two runs. He improved to 12-2
in his career at Plainsman Park. Calvin Coker pitched three scoreless innings
for his first career save.
