PONIES RETURN TO BASEBALL AFTER RAIN-SHORTENED SERIES: Binghamton hopes to hit a dry and playable field on Friday night, after having back-to-back home games postponed due to rain. The Rumble Ponies were slated to begin their home schedule with seven games in eight days, but they wound up playing just five. After losing two out of three against Erie, the Ponies split two with Portland. Tonight’s contest serves as the fourth of 19 scheduled games between Binghamton and Erie.
BINGHAMTON STARTER: Rumble Ponies RHP Corey Oswalt makes his third start of the 2017 season. Despite being handed the loss his first two starts, the 23-year old settled down after difficult opening frames. On 4/9 at New Hampshire, Oswalt allowed four-first inning runs before eventually striking out seven Fisher Cats over four innings. In his second start on 4/14, he allowed three first-inning runs to the SeaWolves, before tossing six innings and whiffing five.
ERIE STARTER: Artie Lewicki makes his third start of the season for the SeaWolves. The righty from New Jersey beat Binghamton on 4/14 to garner his first win of the season. Lewicki went five innings, allowing just one earned run on three strikeouts. Last season, Lewicki made 12 starts for Erie, including one against Binghamton. On the final day of the season (Sept. 5), Lewicki gave up four earned runs in six innings at NYSEG Stadium. Lewicki would not earn a decision as the SeaWolves won 10-8, in 13 innings
ALBERT0 BALD0NAD0: LHP Alberto Baldonado tossed two scoreless frames in Tuesday’s loss. In four appearances this season, the 6-foot-4 Panamanian has pitched seven innings without allowing a run. He’s also struck out at least one batter in each appearance, totaling 10.
RAIN, RAIN, GO AWAY: The Binghamton Rumble Ponies experienced their fourth postponed game of the season on Thursday night in Binghamton. IT was the second time in 2017 that the Rumble Ponies have had consecutive games disrupted due to inclement weather.
WELCOME BACK: RHP Logan Taylor returns to Binghamton after being assigned from Las Vegas. Last season, Taylor appeared in 44 games, starting five of them, and posted a 4-2 mark with a 3.99 ERA. In 10.2 innings with the 51’s this season, the 25-year-old has allowed six earned runs and struck out seven.
SAME PLACE, NEW NAME: The Rumble Ponies will play their first game at that the newly-named UPMC Park. Erie’s home ballpark used to be called Jerry Uht Park.
MAKING MOVES: INF/OF L.J. Mazzilli was transferred to Las Vegas (AAA) from Binghamton (AA). The Rumble Ponies added veteran starting pitcher Donovan Hand to their rotation on Thursday.
UP NEXT: The Rumble Ponies continue their three-game series with Erie when RHP Casey Delgado opposes SeaWolves LHP Matt Crouse on Saturday.
