PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (May 7, 2018) – Luis Carpio hit a two-out, two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to spark the St. Lucie Mets to a stunning 3-2 win over the Florida Fire Frogs on Monday at First Data Field.
The rally began with one out when lefty reliever Justin Kelly plunked left-handed hitter Dash Winningham to put the tying run on base. Sean McLaughlin relieved Kelly and struck out Ian Strom for the second out. That brought up Carpio, who launched a line drive homer to left to put the Mets ahead for the first time.
It was Carpio’s third home run of the season and the first time the Mets have won a game when trailing after seven innings.
Matt Blackham worked around a two-out single in the ninth to pick up his second save.
Matt Pobereyko earned the win after tossing 1.2 scoreless innings of relief. He struck out four batters and stranded three runners in scoring position in his appearance.
Josh Prevost made his second straight quality start. He scattered eight hits and two runs over 6.1 innings.
The Fire Frogs took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a two-out RBI double by Garrison Schwartz.
The Mets tied the game in the fourth on a two-out RBI single by Mike Paez.
A 20 minute power outage delayed the start of the seventh inning. When play resumed the Fire Frogs notched three hits off Prevost. Alejandro Salazar broke the 1-1 tie when he scored from third base on a passed ball.
But the Mets would answer on Carpio’s dramatic homer one inning later.
Carpio went 2 for 3 with a walk.
Gene Cone extended his hitting streak to eight games with a single in the third inning. It is the longest hitting streak for a Met this season.
Paez went 2 for 4.
The Mets (13-16) and Fire Frogs (11-20) play the second game of their series on Tuesday at First Data Field. Start time is 6:30 p.m.
