Press Release:
PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. (May 1, 2018) – The St. Lucie Mets opened up a six-game road trip with a 4-2 wire-to-wire victory over the Charlotte Stone Crabs on Tuesday at Charlotte Sports Park.
Three Mets pitchers limited the Florida State League’s best offense to five hits. Starter Josh Prevost pitched his best game of the season. He held the Stone Crabs to two runs on those five hits in six innings. He walked one batter and struck out three.
Relievers Stephen Nogosek and Matt Pobereyko didn’t allow a hit or run over the final three innings. Nogosek pitched the seventh and eighth. He walked one and struck out two.
Pobereyko fired a perfect ninth with a strikeout for his second save in as many chances.
The Mets offense wasted no time coming out of the off day. Leadoff hitter Jacob Zanon started the game with a single. The next batter Andres Gimenez walked. Then with one out, Zanon and Gimenez executed a double steal. Catcher David Rodriguez’s throw to third sailed into left field and Zanon raced home for a 1-0 lead.
Later in the first inning Ian Strom stole second base and on the throw to second Gimenez zoomed home from third for a 2-0 Mets lead.
The Stone Crabs answered with a run in the bottom of the first. Jesus Sanchez ripped a one-out RBI triple to make it 2-1. However, Prevost kept Sanchez on third to maintain the lead and started a streak of retiring 11 straight batters.
In the third inning Zanon singled and went to second on a sac bunt. He scored when Desmond Lindsay hit a single to left and left fielder Jake Stone made an error. That put St. Lucie up 3-1.
Brandon Brosher yanked a RBI double in the fourth to plate Mike Paez and give the Mets a 4-1 advantage.
Zanon and Brosher had two hits apiece.
The Mets improved to 3-1 against the Stone Crabs this year.
The Mets (11-13) and Stone Crabs (11-14) play the middle game of their series at Charlotte Sports Park on Wednesday. First pitch is 6:35 p.m.
