COLUMBIA, SC – A crowd of 9,278 fans celebrated Independence Day with the Fireflies in style on Wednesday night. The second-largest crowd in Spirit Communications Park history watched as Columbia fell, though, to the Greenville Drive, 4-2.

The atmosphere at the park was thrilling on Wednesday. Also of note, Columbia’s specialty stars and stripes jerseys worn by the players on Wednesday were auctioned off to fans with 100% of the proceeds benefitting South Carolina’s veterans in need through RIP Medical Debt. More than $8,000 was raised from the jersey auction alone. If the campaign raises more than $12,500 by July 9, nearly $800,000 of South Carolina’s veteran’s medical debt will be erased. The initiative is made possible through RIP Medical Debt and everyone can still text to donate so the Fireflies’ goal can be reached: text Fireflies to 50155 and wait for instructions.
The Fireflies jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first when Edgardo Fermin smacked his sixth homer of the season.
Greenville (6-8, 31-52) knotted the score in the third, but it was Columbia (7-6, 41-39) that pulled back ahead in the home half.Raphael Gladu started the inning with a triple off of Denyi Reyes (W, 7-3)) and later scored on Blake Tiberi’s single.
The visitors jumped back in front with a pair of runs in the fifth (Victor Acosta RBI single, Garrett Benge RBI double) and then extended the lead to two runs with an seventh-frame insurance run. Benge knocked in another run and with a pair of RBIs.
Nicholas Debora (L, 1-2) was as sturdy as he could be in a spot start for the Fireflies. The righty allowed just three runs in five innings.

Are you going crazy too, hearing all the possible MLB trade scenarios being bantered about all over the place? Just about every MLB team thinks that Manny Machado is coming there to their team. Good luck. Hope they all have a zillion dollars available.
The Yankees are said to be sniffing lefty starter JA Happ. If they get Happ, I think that it could put them over the top with Boston should the Red Sox not add a quality top end starter more. Those two teams are that close right now. The JD Martinez off season acquisition was vital looking back, just to keep Boston even paced with the Bronx Bombers. Anyway, the Yankees would have an edge going into the post season with JA Happ.
Mack, I think the Mets should try to get a nice package anywhere that they possibly can. The Mets obviously need a few things and not just one like the Yankees and Boston. I have heard rumors to the affect that the Brewers might be a viable trade partner for the Mets. They are trying to make a playoff run but still need parts in order to do so.
So, I checked out their Brewcrew team recently, and this is what I thought made some sense coming back to the Mets. Lefty reliever Josh Hader (age 24, 1.21 ERA, 83 K's in 44 innings, .74 WHIP) Hader is that elusive lefty reliever that this Mets team has looked for and waited for, for way too long. You throw Josh Hader into the mix with Jerry Blevins, Tyler Bashlor (I really like the way he goes at and attacks the plate, Mets should use him a lot more now), Seth Lugo and then right there you have a nice start to an above average bullpen. The Mets should be able to add-in maybe two more relievers from within their own system as well.
Another Brewer player that I find interesting is 23 year old catcher Jacob Nottingham. Now Jacob has been mentioned in recent years past and has been noticed. But overall Jacob appears to be (perhaps putting things together now and is batting a healthy .301 BA, .363 OBP, 9 HR's in 163, despite needing to still trim back his strikeout numbers. We already have five catchers available here, so why not six I ask? Nottingham is a big catcher. 6'2"/230. Although Kevin Plawecki is coming on stronger now, he and Jacob would be a very nice tandem going forward. Maybe trade the Brewers Sal Mineo? Not sure.
The other two players I find interesting are shortstop Maurico Dubon, .343 BA and then finally AA starter Luis Ortiz. Luiz throws mucho hard.
I won't mention just which players from Mets could be offered in such a trade with the Brewers (because it is both rude and stupid to do so, but I am sure that the Mets could figure that out if they wanted to.
A Trade Like This In Summation
The Mets theoretically would get a catcher for now added in, a quality left handed set-up/closer, and both a shortstop and a really good starter for the not so distant future. Not so bad!
