5/20/10

DRAFT: - Blake Dean, Nick Tepesch, Carter Jurica, Drew Vettleson:... and Stephen Yarrow

Blake Dean:

5-16 from: - http://baseballbeginnings.com/2010/05/16/lsu-scouting-updates- “Can still swing it. Clutch guy all the way. Pull hitter – crowds the plate, dares you to beat him. Likes to hold his hands high. Should be more of a power hitter than average hitter in the coming years. Has dropped about 15 pounds. Looks better in a uniform. Much improved defensively at first base.”

Nick Tepesch:

5-17 from: - link  - Texas A&M’s Barret Loux and Nick Tepesch (Missouri) share the Pitcher of the Week accolade for games of May 10-16. Nick Tepesch, Missouri, RHP, Jr., 6-5, 225, Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs - Tepesch recorded his first career shutout as Missouri defeated Nebraska, 2-0, on Friday in the opener of the three-game series. He was perfect through the first 4.1 innings, retiring the first 13 Nebraska batters before giving up a single in the top of the fifth inning. Tepesch struck out a season-high nine and surrendered just five hits to move to 5-5 on the season. The Blue Springs, Mo. hurler retired the side in order in five innings.

Carter Jurica:

5-19 from: - http://baseballdraftreport.com/2010/05/19/2010-mlb-draft-top-30-college-shortstop-prospects/#more-1426  - Potential Starters - Kansas State JR SS Carter Jurica (.360/.448/.593 – 28/21 – 18/23) - Jurica has always had the right tools to succeed (plus speed, enough pop to keep good pitching honest, impressive athleticism), so it’s no shock to see him finally put it all together in 2010. I like him more than most, but still believe he’s a player who will need a healthy number of at bats in the low minors before figuring things out professionally.

Drew Vettleson:

5-19 from: - http://www.sportingnews.com/blog/MLB_Draft   - Bishop Blanchet's Josh Sale might be the best hitter coming out of the Northwest this year, but Vettleson has been arguably the best pitcher....um hands down. Vettleson can throw 90-93 mph with his right arm, actually throws a knuckle-curve 82-83 and has a change-up that flies at 76-79 mph. With his left he sits in the 83-86 mph range and has the same breaking pitches with less velocity. In early April, Vettleson threw a no-hitter, striking out 15. But versatility is Vettleson's calling card. His ambidexterity is seen mainly as a novelty, though it has helped. Most scouts feel he'd be better viewed as a good-hitting outfielder with at least average power potential. He gets the barrel of the bat on the ball well, making consistent contact though he has a slight arm bar in his swing. He has stated himself he prefers playing the outfield.

Stephen Yarrow

5-16 from: - http://baseballbeginnings.com/2010/05/16/stephen-yarrow-report  - 3B - 6-4, 205 Bats: L, Throws: R – USF - Games seen: 1, Innings: 9 - PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Long legs, high hips, wide shoulders and chest yet to physically fill out. A frame ready for more muscle in the coming years. STRENGTHS: Power to all fields and plus, plus bat speed. Pull hitter, pull power. Balanced and coordinated in box. WEAKNESSES: Would have liked to have seen him pick up hard SLs better, needs to prove he can adjust in coming years. Bat speed to crush mistakes, would like to see more ability to go to left field occasionally. Below-average runner. Slightly Below-average fielder, but has feet and hands to be average big league defender. SUMMARY: Might not be the prettiest overall athlete but he can hit. Plus bat speed and hands, should crush mistakes, should be able to beat the good fastball. Lacks a separating secondary tool but should be adequate enough to stay on field defensively. Likely to be typecast at first base. GRADES (Present/Future): Hit 20/50 Power 35/70 Run 40/40 Arm 40/40 Field 40/50 Overall Future Potential: 50
