From Press Release:
Taylor Whitenton and Darin Gorski combined on a three-hit shutout as the Savannah Sand Gnats (24-12) blanked the Rome Braves 3-0, in front of 3,116 fans Saturday night at Historic Grayson Stadium. The Gnats swept the four-game set from Rome and have now won a season-high five straight games. The Gnats are also a season-best 12 games over .500 at 24-12.
Whitenton wobbled in the first, but then steadied himself to finish six innings to earn his first win. He gave up two singles in the first inning, but struck out Rome (12-23) SS Mycal Jones looking to end the threat. Whitenton did not allow another hit. Gorski gave up one single and a walk in three shutout innings of relief to pick up his second save. Neither Gnat pitcher allowed a single runner to third base all night.
Jefry Marte’s solo home run down the left field line leading off the bottom of the second inning gave Savannah a 1-0 lead. It was Marte’s second home run of the year. He finished 2-4, but was robbed of a third hit in the eighth inning when he hit a shot up the middle that ricocheted off reliever Jeffrey Lorick right to Jones at shortstop to begin an unusual 1-6-4-3 double play.
