From Press Release:
Dylan Owen allowed just one hit and struck out a season-best eight men over six innings, but the B-Mets could not score behind him and were limited to one hit by three different Trenton pitchers Friday night in a 3-0 loss at Waterfront Park. Binghamton has now lost a season-worst, four straight games and has been held to just seven runs combined during the losing streak.
The game was a pitcher’s duel from the outset. Thunder righty Lance Pendleton matched zeroes with Owen for the first six innings of the game. The best scoring chances he gave Binghamton (19-16) came in the first two innings. Pendleton walked a pair of men with one out in the first, but nothing came of it, and he issued a walk and allowed a single in the second with two outs, but struck out Kirk Nieuwenhuis to end the threat. The hit allowed in the second was an infield hit for Mike Nickeas that kicked off the glove of Trenton’s starter.
Pendleton worked six innings for the second straight outing and again got a no-decision. He walked four and struck out six.
Owen faced one over the minimum through six innings. The only hit he allowed was a Marcos Vechionacci triple in the third. His eight strikeouts were the most he had recorded in a game since August 14, 2008 when he struck out 10 Daytona hitters while with St. Lucie.
Trenton (19-15) broke the scoreless tie in the seventh. Roy Merritt was summoned from the pen to spell Owen opening the inning. The first hitter to face the lefty, Austin Krum, reached on an infield single to short. David Adams followed and bunted a ball back to Merritt. The southpaw tried to force the lead runner at second but threw wild allowing Krum to advance to third and Adams to reach. Merritt then walked Austin Romine to load the bases.
With the bases loaded and no outs, he struck out Brandon Laird for the inning’s first out. Then with Edwar Gonzalez at the plate, Merritt misfired on a 1-1 slider. The ball in the dirt got away from Nickeas and allowed Krum to score the game’s first run. Vechionacci capped the inning three hitters later with a two-run single, upping the lead to three.
Wilkin De La Rosa notched the win with two, no-hit innings of relief and Grant Duff nailed down his sixth save with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
