Den Dekker Leads Offense in 9-7 Win



TRENTON,NJ – The Binghamton Mets matched a season-high with 15 hits, including fivefrom Matt den Dekker, and held off a late rally to defeat the Trenton Thunder9-7 Friday night at Waterfront Park. The win snapped a seven-game losing streakfor Binghamton in series openers.

DenDekker led the offensive charge with a five-hit attack, including two doubles.It was the second five-hit game of his career, having done the feat as aSavannah Sand Gnat on August 24, 2010. Juan Lagares was the last B-Met to pickup a five-hitter, racking up five hits against the Reading Phillies on July 24,2011. Den Dekker raised his batting average to .336, second-highest in theEastern League.

Forthe fourth straight game, the B-Mets grabbed the lead in the first inning.Reese Havens, hitting leadoff for the first time this season, started with awalk and den Dekker singled against starter Adam Miller. Jerfy Marte broughtboth home by blasting a three-run homer down the left field line. Marte has collectedan RBI extra-base hit in the first inning in each of his last four games.

Trentonscratched out a run without the aid of a hit in the second. Luke Murton reachedto start the inning after getting plunked by B-Mets starter Gonzalez Germen. Hemoved to second on a fielder’s choice, took third on a fly out and scored whenBinghamton failed to turn a potential inning-ending double play.

Germenposted two more scoreless innings before Addison Maruszak ripped a solo homerun to lead off the fifth. It was the final run the righty allowed. Germen retirednine of the final ten he faced to cap his seven-inning performance. Hesurrendered two runs on five hits and struck out six while walking none.

Afterscoring three times against Miller in the first, the B-Mets did not touch homeagain until the seventh. With runners at the corners, den Dekker ripped an RBIdouble to deep left center field. After an intentional walk to Marte, EricCampbell smacked a two-run single to left, ending Miller’s night. Juan Lagaresgreeted reliever Michael Dubee with a run-scoring single through the hole onthe left side.

TheB-Mets stretched their lead to seven with two more runs in the eighth inning.Marte and Campbell provided back-to-back run-scoring singles against Dubee,giving Binghamton a 9-2 advantage.

Binghamtonneeded all the insurance to hold off a Thunder comeback. Ryan Fraser made hisDouble-A debut, taking over for Germen in the eighth. The righty immediately fellinto trouble. He issued a walk and hit a batter before surrendering an RBIgroundout and giving up a run-scoring single. Luke Murton made it a four-runinning by launching a two-run homer to left field.

Fraserwas pulled after Damon Sublett singled. Robert Carson entered and walkedMaruszak to bring the tying run to the plate, but struck out Yadil Mujica toend the threat.

Inthe ninth, the Thunder picked up where they left off. Abraham Almonte scorcheda leadoff double to left center and Jose Pirela followed with a single. After ZoiloAlmonte brought in a run with a groundout, Carson shut the door. The leftystruck out Melky Mesa and induced Murton to pop out to second to end the game.

Germen(2-4) snapped a three-game losing streak with the win, while Miller (0-1)suffered his first loss as a member of the Thunder. Carson (3) racked up thefour-out save.
