LAST GAME: The B-Mets lost to the Altoona Curve, 5-4 on Wednesday night at NYSEG Stadium. Offensively, all four runs came home on B-Met home runs. Wilfredo Tovar hit a solo home run in the second inning, and a two-run shot in the seventh inning. Cory Vaughn also hit a solo home run in the fourth inning. It was Vaughn’s second is as many days since coming back with the B-Mets from St. Lucie. Two throwing errors by Erik Goeddel allowed three unearned runs to score in the third inning. Over six innings on the mound, Goeddel scattered three hits, but was tagged with his fifth loss of the season. In the seventh, Armando Rodriguez allowed two runs and three hits to extend the Altoona lead. An RBI triple and a suicide squeeze brought home the runs. In the ninth, Luis Sanz threw a perfect inning to secure his 14th save of the season.
BINGHAMTON PITCHER: LHP Darin Gorski pitches for the 10th time this season as a B-Met, and his third time against Altoona. His last start came against the Curve on July 31, where he got a no-decision. The lefty threw seven innings and gave up only one unearned run. He scattered four hits, and struck out a season-high eight batters. He also resumed a suspended game from July 1, and threw five innings to pick up the win. In 43.1 innings pitched with the B-Mets, opponents are hitting .159 against him. Gorski spent all of 2012 with the B-Mets, and went 9-8 with a 4.00 ERA in 24 starts. The Mets drafted him in the seventh round of the 2009 draft of Kutztown University (PA).
ALTOONA PITCHER: RHP David Bromberg makes his 17th start of the season for the Curve, and his third against the B-Mets. This is Bromberg’s first start with Altoona since returning from Indianapolis (AAA). With the Indians, he went 1-1 in two starts and gave up four runs in 10.2 combined innings. In two previous starts against Binghamton this season, he is 1-1. On July 3, he earned the win after allowing three runs over six innings. On June 7, he was tagged with the loss after allowing three runs over six innings. On the road this season, he is 3-5 with a 3.50 ERA in 54.0 innings. In 104.1 innings pitched, opponents are hitting .251 against him.
WELCOME BACK, CORY: In three games since rejoining the Binghamton Mets, Cory Vaughn is 5-for-10 with a double, two home runs, and seven RBI. Cory missed 38 games on the disabled list with a right elbow strain, and had not played for the B-Mets since June 2.
THROWING ERRORS: Binghamton made three costly throwing errors in Wednesday’s loss to Altoona. All three of the errors were charged to Binghamton pitchers (Goeddel 2, Rodriguez 1). That was the first time the B-Mets have committed three errors in one game since May 30.
INTO THE HISTORY BOOKS: Jeff Walters earned his 32nd save of the season on Saturday against Harrisburg, adding to his franchise record for most saves in a single season. He passed the record held by Jerrod Riggan, who recorded 28 saves in the 2000 season. The most career saves in Binghamton history is 36, set by Tim Lavigne. Walters is four shy of the record, with 29 games in the regular season left.
RUNNERS IN SCORING POSITION: Over their last 14 games, the B-Mets are hitting .196 (22-112) with runners in scoring position. They are 8-6 during that stretch.
STELLAR PITCHING: Over their last 12 games, the Binghamton pitching staff has posted an impressive 1.26 ERA. The B-Mets are 8-4 during that time. 14 earned runs have scored against Binghamton , and last night was the first time the opponent has scored more than three runs. This season, Binghamton ranks second in the league with a 3.48 ERA.
NEXT GAME PREVIEW: The B-Mets hit the road for a week-long roadtrip. It begins in Erie on Friday night at 5:05 PM. The B-Mets will continue a suspended game from April 10, and then play the regularly scheduled game after its conclusion.
