Hickory 2 - Savannah 1

Savannah, GA – Joey Gallo began Sunday as the active South Atlantic League leader with 26 homeruns. Leading off the top of the ninth, he blasted his 27th of the year to break a 1-1 tie and give the Hickory Crawdads a 2-1 win over the Savannah Sand Gnats.

Gallo finished the day 1-for-3. His homerun was the first for Hickory (28-22/67-53) in the team’s four-game series against the Gnats.

Hickory reliever Jose Leclerc earned the win, his third of the year, for two scoreless innings of relief in the 8th and 9th innings.

The Gnats scored their first and only run in the bottom of the first. 2B Jorge Rivero reached on a fielding error when SS Nick Urbanus, couldn’t handle a line drive. Rivero scored on 1B Brian Harrison’s RBI single into left for a 1-0 lead.

The Crawdads evened the game at 1-1 in the top of the fourth inning. With one out, Gallo walked and then scored on an RBI single from C David Lyon.

Savannah reliever Hunter Carnevale gave up Gallo’s game-winner to take the loss to fall to 0-3.

The Gnats had three hits Sunday and did not have a hit between the first and eighth innings.

The Gnats split the series with the Crawdads and finished their seven-game homestand at 4-3.

Savannah is off Monday before embarking on a three-city 10-day, 11-game roadtrip.
