Chris @tpgMets - Mets have 36 players on their 40-man roster under control for next year, 2 under contract
We always seem to complain that the kids that Sandy and Company are, either drafting or signing, just not producing at the levels we feel they should be producing. Yes, the system is filling with kids hitting below .220 or pitching with inflated ERA’s, but, you’d be surprised how many aren’t.
So, let’s not be surprised anymore:

We talked last week about one of ‘our’ 19-year old prospects (SS Gavin Cecchini) and how he’s starting to put together some decent numbers. Well, another 19-year old, 1B Dominic Smith, also is coming around during his first professional year. He has two hits on Monday (two on Sunday also) and finished the day hitting .252. I’ve said this a number of times… you have no idea how hard it is for these kids to convert from high school ball to what they call in professional baseball, ‘the grind’. It’s a combination of so many things they aren’t used to… baseball every day… warm-up for 4-6 hours before each game… roommates… everybody telling them they have don’t everything wrong their whole life… .252 by a 19-yr. old in the same year you were drafted easily translates into a .300+ season. Exciting stuff from our number one pick.
Gary Seagren –
My big question today is after reading about the defection of Cuban 1st baseman Jose Abreu why shouldn't WE be included in the ESPN article about interested teams?
Mack – Well, the short answer is probably because the team isn’t interested. I never have been successful in figuring out the Mets stance on international prospects. Both Cuba and Japan don’t seem to exist to them. And, by the way, there’s no way they could be negotiating with this guy in secret. These kind of things always leak out. My guess is the Mets have mentally given back first base to Ike Davis for 2014 and beyond.
Ted Page -
“Terrible Ted” played on 12 teams in the Negro Leagues during his 14-season career. A solid hitter and tough competitor, it has been said that Page “could beat you at the plate, on the bases or in the field.” As one of the fastest, most feared and intense base runners in the Negro Leagues, he played for two of the greatest teams of all time: the 1931 Homestead Grays and the 1932-34 Pittsburgh Crawfords. After an injury forced his retirement in 1935, he eventually became an owner of Hillview Lanes and later a partner in Meadow Lanes in Pittsburgh. For years, he wrote a bowling column for the Pittsburgh Courier. He later worked as a public relations consultant for the Gulf Oil Corporation. Page was inducted to the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 1977. Retired, he was brutally beaten to death by a handyman in his home, at age 81, in 1984. He was interred at Allegheny Cemetery in an unmarked location — not far from Hall of Famer Josh Gibson's final resting place in the same cemetery. In 1975, Page and Pedrin "Pete" Zorrilla located Gibson's unmarked burial plot at Allegheny Cemetery and, with help from Pirates star Willie Stargell and baseball commissioner Bowie Kuhn, purchased a red granite headstone that reads "Josh Gibson, 1911-1947, Legendary Baseball Player." http://sabr.org/latest/join-us-negro-leaguer-ted-pages-grave-marker-installation-ceremony-august-17

Even better, Dom Smith only just turned 18. Hopefully, he's in Savannah next year as a 19 yr old.
It's not that I don't like the Mets' first rounders, I just hate the 5/6 year wait on every one.
Speaking of our 40 man roster, we have some really concerning rule V decisions to make this offseason, which means that we might lose a few guys that we would otherwise want to hang onto. Take a look at this list and if you were the Mets FO, which players would you look to add to the 40 man roster to protect from being taken in the Rule V draft and conversely, who on the 40 man roster do you see as expendable and dont see on the 40 man next year?

The following players will be eligible for the Major League phase of the Rule 5 draft this coming winter (players in bold will be eligible for the first time). Teams can protect players from the Rule 5 draft by placing them on the 40-man roster. The deadline to add a player to the 40-man roster this year is November 20, 2013.
Note: If a player you think is eligible does not appear on this list, be sure to check the Minor FA tab. Since minor league free agency is granted a few weeks ahead of the Rule 5 addition deadline, it may be the case that a player will not be eligible for the Rule 5 draft simply because he will be eligible for minor league free agency first.

Players are naturally protected from the Rule 5 draft 4 times if they were younger than 19 on the June 5th immediately prior to the date on which they signed their first contract, and 3 times if they were age 19 or older. If they signed their first contract after the end of the season (for the team to which they're assigned), then their natural Rule 5 protection extends an additional year.
Below are 20 guys that in my opinion, will need to at least have a conversation had about them as to whether they will need to be added to the 40 man this offseason or not. It's very possible any one of these guys could be taken by another ML team and kept on the ML roster for the season in some capacity. Some guys are definitely going to be added, DeGrom, Walters, den Decker, Matz, while many are question marks, Bennett, Fuller, Cohoon, etc.
