Mets Minor League Report – August 25

Brooklyn Cyclones

MML Player of the Day - Aug. 25:  The middle of the Brooklyn Cyclones lineup.
Brooklyn’s 3 through 6 hitters went 10 for 18, with 4 HR, 10 RBI, 6 R.

As this post goes to press, Fresno (63-71) leads Las Vegas (76-57) 2-0, end of 7th.

Rafael Montero: 5.1 IP, 2 R, 6 H, BB, 5 K. For the PCL that’s a reasonably good outing.
John Church gives up a hit and 2 walks, but no runs, in the 7th.

Not much doing offensively, as Eric Surkamp, the opposing pitcher has a 2 hitter going through 7 innings.

Akron (64-69) blasts Binghamton (81-49) 6-2.

Greg Peavy (L, 2-2) is rocked: 6.0 IP, 6 R, 5 ER, 7 H, BB, 2 K.
Chase Hutchingson continues to look good in relief: 2.0 IP, 0 R, H, BB, K. In his last 10 games – 14.2 IP, he has a 0.61 ERA, 0.95 WHIP .

Wilfredo Tovar: 1-2, BB, 2 R.

Ft Myers (75-52) takes both ends of their double header from St Lucie (66-59).

St Lucie drops Game 1: 5-1.

Rainy Lara (L, 4-5) has a bad outing: 5.0 IP, 5 R, 9 H, (HR) BB, 2 K.

Dustin Lawley: 2-3.

Ft Myers captures the nightcap 8-2.

In his 1st start for St Lucie, Octavio Acosta (L, 0-1) goes only 3.0 IP, 3 R, 3 H, 5 BB, 3 K. After walking only 8 in 43.1 innings for the GCL Mets, he walks 5 in only 3 innings in his debut. Nerves? Or could his promotion to Advanced A, bypassing Savannah and Brooklyn, be too much too soon?
Shawn Teufel was also shaky: 1.0 IP, 4 R, 2 H, 3 BB, K.

Rylan Sandoval: 2-3, 3B, R.
Jayce Boyd: 2-3, 2 RBI.

West Virginia (76-57) edges Savannah (72-57) 4-3.

Seth Lugo (L, 2-1) goes 7.0 innings: 4 R, 9 H, (HR) 2 BB, 7 K.
Estarlin Morel: 2.2 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 0 BB, 4 K.

Eudy Pina: 1-4, BB, 2 R.
Cole Frenzel: 1-2, BB, 2 RBI.

Brooklyn (34-31) demolishes Vermont(29-36) 12-5.

Akeel Morris is pulled after 1.2 innings: 2 R, 3 H, 4 BB, K. Not so good, but . . .
Cameron Griffin (W, 1-0) comes in to get his 1st win: 1.1 IP, 0 R, H, BB, 3 K.
Ricky Knapp (S, 3) records a 3 inning save: R, 0 ER, 4 H, 0 BB, 2 K.

L.J. Mazzilli: 2-4, HR, 2 BB, 3 RBI, 2 R.
Jared King: 3-6, HR, 2 RBI, 2 R.
James Roche: 2-4, HR, BB, 3 RBI, R.
Alex Sanchez: 3-4, HR, 2B, BB, 2 RBI, R.

Pulaski (40-23) annihilates Kingsport (35-27) 15-0.

Four K-Mets pitchers were battered until Ruben Reyes came in for the final 2.0 innings: 0 R, 2 H, BB, 2 K.

Richie Rodriguez got the Mets lone hit.

The GCL and DSL have no games scheduled on Sundays.

Welcome to a new strike zone, Mr. Acosta.

It's not bad enough that he has to face tougher opposing hitters, he also has to contend with tougher umps too. The strike zone should be the strike zone. It should be enforced uniformly throughout baseball.

When we were kids the strike zone was from the knees to the letters. It seems that some time ago they stopped calling the high strike. Now anything between the belt and the letters is in no mans land. Depending upon the ump, and maybe depending upon the day, or the mood of the ump, it can be called either way.
