Savannah 6 - Charleston 0
Savannah, GA – Luis Cessa handled the pitching and Brandon Nimmo sparked the offense in a 6-0 Savannah Sand Gnats victory over the Charleston RiverDogs Monday night at Historic Grayson Stadium.
The Gnats (22-18/65-44) improved to 6-2 in their last eight games with the win, while the RiverDogs (22-22/61-51) lost their sixth straight.
Cessa shut out the Dogs through eight innings yielding just four hits, without walking a batter. He struck out a personal season-high 12 batters. He did not allow a runner to second base until one out in the seventh inning and lowered his ERA to 3.12.
The Gnats scored their first run in the third inning. Singles from SS Dimas Ponce, 2B Jorge Rivero and Nimmo loaded the bases with no outs. Ponce scored on a ground ball doubleplay from Maikis De La Cruz to put the Gnats up 1-0.
The game stayed 1-0 until Savannah exploded for five runs in the bottom of the eighth. Nimmo blasted his second home run of the year out to rightcenter, a two-run shot to put the Gnats ahead 3-0. Savannah picked up RBI singles from RF Eudy Pina, LF Gregory Pron and C Albert Cordero to round out their five-run frame.
Paul Sewald struck out three batters in the ninth to finish off Cessa’s outstanding start.
