Brandon Nimmo was three for five and Julian Hilario threw five good innings to help the Gnats boil the Hickory Crawdads 6-3 Thursday night at Historic Grayson Stadium.

Nimmo was involved in two of the Gnats’ (24-19/67-45) three run-scoring innings Thursday night. In the third inning, he singled to help load the bases leading to a two-run rally and a 2-0 Savannah lead. He drove home the final run of the night to make the score 6-3 with a line drive single into right-centerfield in the bottom of the eighth.

Meanwhile, on the hill, Savannah starter Julian Hilario was cruising in his second start of the year, retiring nine batters in a row from the second through the fourth innings. However, DH Jorge Alfaro doubled to begin the fifth to halt Hilario’s streak, and came around to score on CF Lewis Brison’s RBI single into center to cut the Gnats’ lead to 2-1.

The Gnats answered back with three runs in their half of the fifth against ‘Dads’ starter Paul Schwendel for a 5-1 advantage. DH Eudy Pina singled home a run and then RF Gregory Pron brought home two with a line drive into center.

Hickory cut Savannah’s lead to 5-3 with two tallies in the top of the sixth against reliever Tim Peterson. Peterson allowed the first four batters to reach on two hits and two walks, then retired the next six batters in a row from the sixth through seventh innings.

Up three in the ninth, the Gnats turned to closer Beck Wheeler who increased the tension. With two outs and the bases clear, Wheeler walked the 8,9 and leadoff hitters to load the bases before striking out Taylor Wrenn swinging to end the game.

The Gnats will hand the ball to LHP Steven Matz (4-4, 2.50) against RHP Connor Sadzeck (10-4, 2.41) Friday night at 7:05 pm. Gates to Historic Grayson Stadium open at 6 pm. The radio pre-game show begins on News/Talk 630 WBMQ and online at sandgnats.com at 6:45 pm.
