LAST GAME: Two Dustin Lawley home runs weren’t enough for the Binghamton Mets as they lost to the New Britain Rock Cats, 9-6, on Tuesday night at New Britain Stadium. Hansel Robles gave up a season-high nine hits and a career-high eight runs in three-plus innings. Brian Burgamy went 1-for-4 and scored twice.Ryan Fraser and Adam Kolarek combined to hold New Britain to one run in five innings of relief. Lawley has three long balls through the first two games of this series.
BINGHAMTON STARTER: RHP Tyler Pill makes his 15th appearance and his 14th start. The Covina, California native is coming off a win in his last outing at Altoona on Friday, June 27. Pill went 6.2 innings of two-run ball and struck out six in an 8-2 Binghamton win. He was also 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs. The B-Mets have won the righty’s last nine appearances. That includes two starts against New Britain in which he went a combined 11 innings and allowed three runs. He didn’t factor into the decision in either outing. The Cal State-Fullerton product was taken by the Mets in the fourth round of the 2011 draft.
NEW BRITAIN STARTER: RHP Tyler Duffey toes the rubber for the 12th time this season and the second time against Binghamton. The 23-year-old didn’t factor into the decision in his last start. He allowed two runs (one earned) in 6.1 innings in a 3-2 New Britain loss to New Hampshire on Friday, June 27. In Duffey’s only other start against the B-Mets he allowed four runs in four innings in a no decision on May 24. Binghamton won the game 8-6. The Houston native was taken by Minnesota in the fifth round of the 2012 draft out of Rice.
NEW MONTH, SAME LAWLEY: B-Mets INF/OF Dustin Lawley picked up in July where he left off in June. The slugger hit two home runs in Tuesday’s loss to New Britain. This comes after Lawley hit seven in June. The 25-year-old has three long balls through the first two games of this series. He’s tied for the team lead in that category with 13.
SCRATCHING AND CLAWING BACK: After the B-Mets won the first four meetings with the Rock Cats in 2014, they’ve gone just 2-6 since. That includes a 1-4 mark at New Britain Stadium. The team has been outscored 40-31 during the eight game stretch and has been held to three runs or fewer four times.
PATIENCE PAYS OFF: After Tyler Pill got a total of eight runs of support in his first five starts of the season, he’s tallied at least six in six of his last nine outings. The team was 0-5 in those first five starts and his 9-0 since. Overall, the offense is averaging about five runs of support during Pill’s outings.
RUN, DON’T WALK: This series is a matchup of two of the least likely pitching staffs to walk a batter in the Eastern League. Binghamton ranks tenth in the league in free passes issued with 212. That’s two more than New Britain’s allowed this season. The teams have each walked six batters through the first two games of this series.
BOYD BUBBLES OVER: Binghamton first baseman Jayce Boyd has come up big for Binghamton on their current road trip. He is 6-for-20 with four runs and three RBI over the last six games. That includes his first triple of the season on Tuesday.
BACK ON TRACK: The B-Mets snapped a streak of three straight games with at least one error during Tuesday night’s loss to New Britain. The team had committed seven in the last three games. Binghamton has the second fewest defensive blunders in the league with 57 on the season.
