St. Lucie 5 - Lakeland 4

The St. Lucie Mets shook off a stunning ninth-inning comeback by Lakeland to defeat the Flying Tigers 5-4 in 10 innings on Saturday at Tradition Field.

Lakeland’s Austin Green launched a game-tying solo home run off of T.J. Chism with two out and two strikes in the ninth, but the Mets recovered to snap their four losing streak in extras.

L.J. Mazzilli led off the bottom of the 10th with a double against Nate Fury and moved to third on Cam Maron’s single. Jared King struck out for the first out of the inning, but Fury’s first pitch to Phillip Evans bounced away from the catcher Green and Mazzilli slid safely into home to give the Mets a walk off victory.

Paul Sewald pitched a perfect top of the 10th to get the win.

The Mets looked like they would run away with the game. Maikis De La Cruz put the Mets up 1-0 in the third with a single and Cam Maron followed later in the inning with a two-out, two-run single to make it 3-0.

Evans belted his third homer of the year in the sixth to put the Mets up 4-0.

Mets starter Luis Cessa cruised for most of the night. After Andy Dirks led off the game with a single, Cessa only allowed one more base runner until the top of the seventh.

In the seventh, Chad Wright led off with a single. Cessa rebounded to get a pop out and a strikeout, but Green extended the inning with a single. That brought up James Robbins, who launched a three-run home to cut the Mets’ lead to 4-3.

Cessa escaped further damage when Maron threw out Jared Reaves trying to steal second.

Cessa struck out eight in seven innings. He allowed five hits, one walk and three runs, all on the Robbins’ homer.

Beck Wheeler struck out three in 1 1/3 innings of relief.

Mazzilli’s leadoff double in the 10th extended his hitting streak to nine games. - team press release
