Bradenton 2 - St. Lucie 1

The Bradenton Marauders came from behind  to win a crucial game against the St. Lucie Mets 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at Tradition Field.

The Marauders took advantage of a bout of wildness from Domingo Tapia and T.J. Chism in the seventh inning to score their only runs.

With one out in the seventh, Tapia gave up a double to Max Moroff and walked Justin Howard and Raul Fortunato to load the bases with one out.

Chism was brought in to face the lefty Jin-De Jhang and he walked Jhang to force home the tying run. Ashley Ponce followed with an RBI infield single 65 feet up the third base line to put the Marauders up 2-1.

The Mets scored their only run of the game in the sixth. Jeff McNeil extended his hitting streak to nine games with a leadoff triple. He slid safely home on Gavin Cecchini’s sac fly.

The Mets had runners at the corners with two outs in the eighth, but Fortunato hauled in a deep line drive to center by L.J. Mazzilli to keep the Marauders in front.

Ponce made an error at third with two outs in the ninth that allowed Maikis De La Cruz to advance to second. However, Josh Smith got Albert Cordero to ground back to him to end the ballgame.

The Marauders took sole possession of first place in the FSL South with the win and are now 4.5 games ahead of the Mets. Had the Mets won they would’ve been just 2.5 games back of first place.

Tapia was pitching one of his best games of the season before he lost control with the back-to-back walks in the seventh. He went 6 1/3 innings and gave up two runs on just four hits.

Marauders starter Chad Kuhl won his FSL-leading 12th game. He held the Mets to one run in six innings.

The Mets offense has been held to seven runs in the last four games. Meanwhile the pitching staff has put together three consecutive quality starts. The Mets are 1-2 in those games.

The Mets only had three hits - the triple from McNeil, a double from Jared King and a single by Cecchini.

Bradenton and St. Lucie have played 14 games against each other, seven of which have been decided by one run. The Marauders are 4-3 in those games. Overall, each team is 7-7 in the season series. - team press release
