Tom Brennan - MAJORING ON THE MINORS - A LOOK AT THE 2011 METS DRAFT

2011 METS DRAFT – HOW ARE THEY DOING?
by Tom Brennan

Here’s a quick recap of the 2011 draft.  37 draftees were signed.

Archie Bunker is a Met fan and asked how they doin’ dere, Edith, hah?

Well, let's find out, Arch.
Each draft year deserves to be evaluated, and fans for a long time were upset with the #1 round Nimmo pick when Fernandez was available.  But he is progressing at an age-appropriate pace.
That said, I think the 2011 Mets’ draft is shaping up to be a fruitful one in terms of moderate major league future talent.
Twelve key guys, IMO:
·       3 nearly ready guys who can be high impact in a year or 2 – Brandon Nimmo, Cory Mazzoni, Jack Leathersich.

·       4 moderately promising talents in Danny Muno, Logan Verrett, Tyler Pill, and Michael Fulmer.

·       5 guys who could lead to pleasant surprises within a few years, such as Xorge Carillo, Travis Taijeron, Dustin Lawley, John Gant and Robert Gsellman.

·       And as always, a few other guys who have done well – see below.

Let’s look over the list:

As much as I am inclined to go along with the crowd, his struggles adjusting to higher levels and his high K rate has me wondering if his ceiling is MLB star, or Matt den Dekker/Kirk. Winter ball struggles.

Injury-bugged, so only 300 innings to date, but a strong closeout in Las Vegas in 2014 makes me think he can be a pen arm in 2015, maybe a valuable trade chip. In some orgs, he might be #1 pitching prospect. 24-12 career.

Fine 2014 season in Vegas: 11-5, 4.33 in 28 starts.  Not a big K pitcher and surrendered 17 HRs.  As with Mazzoni, he might be #1 pitching prospect. 28-13 career.  Trade chip?

Jack doesn’t get enough love from Metophiles.  197 inn, 334 Ks, 3.42.  Not a closer, but only saved 1 of 5 opportunities in 2014. 1.36 WHIP.
He’d be a major league pen guy for many teams on opening day.

RATING SCALE:

1 – future impact major leaguer and performing at a high level

2 – future major leaguer – unclear if he will be an impact player

3 – decent shot at making it to the big enchilada in some capacity

4 – long shot to make the majors

5 – extremely long shot to make the majors

Some guys, I split between 2 ratings.  Couldn’t make up my mind!

Archie Bunker gave this year’s draft 3 Meatheads on a scale of 1-4.

Whaddya think?  Have a great day.

The draft is kosher but you need to do something about the meathead who fills out the lineup card otherwise they're all destined to rot.

Reese -

It's too early for me (and all of us) to give our annual prediction, but I think it is safe to say that this is the last year TC will be the manager of the Mets.

Love these articles.

I think Fulmer will be pretty good - I am hoping he has a break out year this year.

Mazzoni would be much more touted if we didn't have Thor and Matz - he strikes me as a future Parnell.

@Mack

4 years too late. After his first losing campaign they held an option. They could have just let him slink away then with his tail between his legs. The front office has no one to blame but themselves for saddling this team with Terry Collins.

As soon as he said last year he was intentionally benching younger players in favor of veterans (something anyone with eyes had seen long before his admission of doing it) he should have been fired on the spot.

Tom Brennan said...

Hey, Reese

Terry Collins has a "Bunker Mentality" with his veterans. Hunker down and take a beating with the tried-and-true. Hopefully we get a better manager real soon. I hope his touting of Tejada was to optimize his trade value, because I think they'd be far better off in getting rid of him before April to show they are serious about trying to win, and not keep hoping some mediocre guy is going to figure it out and be above average as a starter.

Unless they look elsewhere, Flores is my opening day SS. Tejada can buy a ticket if he wants to attend opening day.

Lew, Mazzoni would already be in the majors if he was staying healthy. He WILL be good, likely in the pen. Hopefully, Fulmer stays healthy and starts to show the promise that Matz has been oozing for the past 2 years.
