Tom Brennan - DSL Seasons Kick Off

Tom Brennan - DSL Seasons Kick Off

The Mets' 2 Dominican Summer League teams kicked off.

The teenagers are getting after it.

One team won its first game, the other lost.

Of note:

Gilberto Espinosa went 4 for 4 with 3 doubles as a DH.  The 18 year old had about 70 ABs in the DSL last year, so what a way to start this season.  How about 5 for 5 today, Gilberto?

His teammate, LF Jean Carlos Soto, born 4-3-2000 (yep, 2000, people) was 3-4 with 2 RBIs, tying him in RBIs with former DSL-er Juan Lagares.

More games, more stories.  Rookie ball seasons start in 2 weeks, post-draft.

Soto is off to a good start.

Here is why the Mets (and minor league teams they face) want Tebow around, reported in the Columbia SC newspaper:

Fans pour into Hagerstown to see Tebow, Fireflies: The draw of Tebow and the Fireflies provided a huge boost to Hagerstown’s attendance.

The Fireflies’ four-game series with the Suns drew 22,578 fans, an average of 5,644 a night and included two crowds of more than 6,000 people.

Before the four-game series with Columbia, Hagerstown’s attendance was 20,833 in 23 home games this year, an average of 905 per game.

So, one can see that Tebow is really helping these teams' bottom lines.

Espinosa follwed his 4 for 4, 3 double first game with a 2-4 with a homer game. Not too shabby for 2 games.
