Mets Draft – 24th Round – RHRP Joe Cavallaro
The University of South Florida reported the following:
Joe
Cavallaro, 6’4” 190 LHP, is a 21 year old University
of South Florida junior pitcher selected by the New York Mets in the 24th round
of the 2017 Major League Baseball Draft on Wednesday.
The right-handed
Cavallaro transitioned from a starter to a reliever role in 2017 and thrived in
his new role. He had a career-low 2.28 ERA in 30 appearances. Cavallaro posted
a 5-3 record with five saves, striking out 77 hitters in 59.1 innings.
Cavallaro has made
60 career appearances for the Bulls, posting a 14-8 record with a 3.63 career
ERA. He recorded 193 strikeouts and limited opponents to a .221 batting
average.
As part of a
pitching staff that set a program record with 620 Ks in 2017, Cavallaro
finished second on the team with 11.72 strikeouts per nine innings.
